November 4, 2008, 11:02pm (report abuse)Please pass this extention I've been trying to save money for the past year to get back into school at this rate I'll never go back...Everything is going up in price and its almost impossible to feed two people on this income...I don't know what I'm going to do when my benefits are exhausted this month....
you know what
November 4, 2008, 11:12pm (report abuse)all of these people are absolutely right... honestly we should take one of these people and make THEM president at least they would actually give a damn....
I beg you
November 5, 2008, 8:52am (report abuse)Please pass the unemployment extension. I am a divorced mom of 3. I lost my job in Dec. 2007 dur to the business being sold. I am unable to find work. My 12 year old daughter has a brain tumor and I am so much of need in any extra benifits I can get. I am begging you.
Have Mercy
November 5, 2008, 1:15pm (report abuse)I only have 2 weeks of unemployment, this is my only means for $$$. Can you believe this I went on an interview with all the qualifications. The company was more concern with the position paid less than what I was getting paid. If I am not worried, why should the company???/
The election is over...
November 6, 2008, 8:17am (report abuse)...it's time for Congress to get off their butts and get back to work and pass this bill. I think Ashley (see above) hit it right on the head. People who need this extension need it to make ends meet. They are not going to spend the money on new TV's or IPods or meals at fancy restaurants. They need the money to put food on the table, pay the rent and to keep the lights on.

November 6, 2008, 1:45pm (report abuse)Please pass this bill while we still look for jobs, our lives depend on it.
Have a heart
November 7, 2008, 12:31am (report abuse)It's tough at all levels when you lose your job, there is always hemming and hawing to do a good thing in government, but there are always plenty of billions for war, wall street, and anything else, for their friends when they hold our their hands,or when they screw up, that gets passed immediately.
Now it is time to help America, pass the bill. Thankyou for your time, have a great life, and Merry Christmas, 2009 should be a better year. Remember this is America!

November 7, 2008, 2:21pm (report abuse)Funny, no one has thought to ask our Congress all of them to take a pay cut! After all many of our "congressional leaders" are at a minimum guilty of bringing on the current financial mess by cheering on thier wall street buddies and housing brokers as they made bad decisions which all americans must now pay for!!!. Please pass this bill so I can continue to search for a new job and stop pulling money out of mt IRA & 401 K to survive-Gee maybe I will not get hit with addtional taxes for these actions!

November 7, 2008, 9:49pm (report abuse)The middle class is hurting without this extension....if you care about us and not just the Wall Street class, pass this bill. I can't even think about getting a new car to help GMAC out until I find a job....the Airline industry that I was employed in for 23 yrs. has taken a hit and so have I.

November 8, 2008, 1:31am (report abuse)Pass this bill, please. No more benefits, ran out. I think that 26, not 7 or 13, weeks are in order. The benefits should be commensurate with the time necessary to find a job. Actually, 26 weeks may not even do it, but at least it's a significant timeframe; 7 weeks is ridiculous, 13 is weak.
Unemployed
November 8, 2008, 8:37am (report abuse)I have been searching for a job for 7 months. Believe me, I have been searching. I have sent out over 500 resumes. My unemployment has run out, and I am very disguisted with our government who can bail out the rich and let the middle class suffer.
Looking for work
November 8, 2008, 9:42am (report abuse)I hear talk that the president does not want to extend the unemployment benefits because then people won't LOOK for work. That is a bunch of hogwash. There are so many people that need this money now..My unemployment ran out Sept 29, I don't think I will make it until Jan 20 2009

November 8, 2008, 10:46pm (report abuse)this is my response to . (see above) who has such a strong opinion but can't even grace us with his/her name (coward) ...telling people who need money to survive that they are whining and to get over it is absolute bullsh*t. Really? we should get a life...no you need to get a life because obviously you are a heartless piece of sh*t WITH NO LIFE if all you can do is insult a bunch of people in need...Whats next for you ...maybe you also like to steal candy from children or maybe beating up the homeless you a**hole...People like YOU is what is wrong with this world... no compassion...I commend all this beautiful people for speaking up and I wish them nothing but the best...its times like these that we have to stick together....

November 9, 2008, 12:59am (report abuse)Stop the whine, get off your ass, get a job. Stop trying to get the rest of us to pay for your laziness.

November 9, 2008, 2:35pm (report abuse)My unemployment has run out. I am on Craigslist eveyday. I've sent at least 200 resumes out, and have went and filled out many apps, and have YET to get a phone call back! How do they expect us to survive when gas, food, and bills are going up, with no jobs, or income?? I guess we are not good enough to care about!! So instead of giving the people all that money, lets give them to banks, so nobody can get loans, cause we have NO MONEY!!! We send food to other countries, and rebulid them... When are we gonna get the help WE deserve??

November 10, 2008, 1:47pm (report abuse)I also along with so many others have run out of unemployment.I have always been able to find a job until this year.I have sent out hundreds of resumes, and have only had 3 interveiws.I was told by all three that there was a freeze on hiring, but they wanted to have interveiws with possible future employees.unfortunatly when they decide to call i will not have a home not to mention a phone.I have worked 22 years straight, paid enormous taxes and filed for unemployment ONCE.A extension is not too much to ask.

November 10, 2008, 3:31pm (report abuse)I also have worked most of my life. I am 41 years old. I even worked whil my children were small. I now have been unemployed for 11 months. I cried when the 1st extension went through. I needed the money so very bad. My children are still underage and the EX is not paying support. I once again need this extension very . very bad, and I am not saying I even need it for x-mas presents. I need it to pay the heat bills and so I have a home to live in. I send out resumes about everyday. I now have no more extra money to even buy stamps to send them out. My unemployment stopped the 1st of October. How can I even look for a job without money for gas or money for stamps. My kids need to eat first, and have a warm house. What am I suppose to do if we do not get another extension?

November 11, 2008, 6:02pm (report abuse)I do feel compassion for most of the people on this string, however, I am not in favor of a welfare state. I see a lot of highly qualified people that have been unemployed since before the DOW peaked at 14,000. I see that McDonalds is always hiring, yet none of you can find jobs. I can only assume that most Americans are not willing to work for $10/hour anymore as unemployment pays more. I am in favor of extending the bill as long as the dollar amount is capped at something low enough to encourage people to take employment that they consider beneath them. Manual labor isn't just for illegal aliens anymore and we as Americans need to get used to that new reality.
.
November 12, 2008, 10:27am (report abuse)Dakota,
You are on target. Many of our citizens have become lazy and believe that working at some of the jobs available is beneath them.
Come on people, sometimes you have to give up your suit and tie or fancy dress and go to work.
melissa
November 12, 2008, 12:51pm (report abuse)My unemployment is only 148.00 per week. So I would take any job. But you see, I have"daylight" driving only on my car liscense due to poor eyesite and NO ONE will hire me... And where I live there are no buses or taxi's. So I very much need an extension.

November 12, 2008, 5:01pm (report abuse)I THINK IT'S RIDICULOUS THAT OUR SO CALLED PRESIDENT BUSH CHOSES TO BAIL OUT HIS BUDDIES THEN TO HELP THE UNEMPLOYED. I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR A JOB FOR NINE MONTHS, MY EXTENSION HAS NOW RUN OUT. THIS COUNTRY NEEDS TO START HELPING PEOPLE IN OTHER COUNTRYS AND START WORRYING ABOUT THIER OWN CITIZENS. THE ECONOMY BEING IN THE SHAPE IT'S IN AND EVERYTHING GOING UP AND MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE OUT OF WORK. LET'S ASK THIS WITH SO MANY PEOPLE OUT OF WORK,WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM? THERE WILL BE LESS PEOPLE WORKING AND NO TAXES OF ANY KIND BEING PAID, MORE HOMELESS, AND MORE CRIME. PEOPLE ARE GIVING UP MORE EVERYDAY. JOBS BEING SHIPPED OVERSEAS-GOVERNMENT DON'T CARE. SOME PEOPLE AREN'T EVEN ENTITLED TO FINACIAL HELP IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM. EXTEND UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS A SECOND TIME AND GIVE SOME OF US BACK SOME KIND OF HOPE. BUT DON'T WORRY MR. BUSH, YOU CAN KEEP BAILING OUT YOUR BUDDIES, WHILE THEY TAKE THEIR MINI VACTIONS ON THE TAX PAYERS, AND THEN GIVE THEM EVEN MORE MONEY.

November 12, 2008, 10:45pm (report abuse)If this bill doesn't pass, congress should be ashamed of themselves. If Washington can give trillions of dollars to companies(crooks)who mismanaged their companies, and ignore the unemployed...well...they suck.

I live in Michigan and Mcdonalds isn't even hiring!!as far as unemployment being capped it already is, do you think people can make the mortgage pmt or rent, utility bills, car pmt, and put food on the table for a family of 5 at $342 a week??going to the grocery store for bread and milk is an easy $20.00. we are not asking for welfare we just want to something to get by on untill we can find a job any job!!!!if you have any connections PLEASE SHARE!!!!!

November 13, 2008, 2:17pm (report abuse)This is a very tough time. I have been lucky enough to find a seasonal/part-time job but can't find a full-time position. Please help people get by until the job market opens up again.

November 13, 2008, 2:21pm (report abuse)This is absolutely necessary. People who have not had the experience of playing "beat the clock" to find a job have no idea how painful this all is. You wake up every day praying that something will turn up and go to bed every night with a lump in your stomach because you don't know if you're going to be able to make the mortgage payment.

November 13, 2008, 11:34pm (report abuse)It is my hope and prayer that President Bush and “others” influential in determining the passing of this much needed extension understand just how “desperate” a state those of us hit by this economic rock slide are in.
To all you other political skeptics of this extension…….forget the fact that supporting a more rigorous extension is the appropriate and ethical thing to do! Focus if you would on the silly concept that these extra benefits your providing is money that GOES DIRECTLY INTO THE ECONOMY (Especially during this time of the season) AND NOT THROUGH THE INSATIABLE TIERS & TIERS OF THE RIDICULOUSLY WEALTHY bankers and brokers. PLEASE put “Help” directly into the hands of the people that really NEED it.
God Bless,

November 13, 2008, 11:49pm (report abuse)I don’t want to go into a long detailed description of my personal situation as I’m sure there are others in even more financial chaos than myself due to this jobless market we’re in. I will say however that this is the first time in over 20 years I’ve ever been without a job. My continuing battle to post, send and deliver resumes…..pleading for interviews…..and reading entry level job descriptions has left me sick to my stomach and practically baron of any hope of finding a job while in this “We currently have a freeze on hiring” and “Actually we’re down sizing at this point…sorry” never ending economic position most of us are in. We’re NOT working NOT because we don’t want to…It’s because NO ONE IS HIRING until this economy and national confidence is well into RECOVERY.
DG
November 13, 2008, 11:52pm (report abuse)I honestly feel the government has to assume a more stringent approach in helping those of us affected by ONE OF THE WORSE recessions in 30 years!!!! Providing a 3 month “Band-Aid” just is NOT enough!..……PLEASE understand what its like to have collectors calling your house for payments and then coming home after a “last resort” day FULL of rejections from local convenience stores and holiday shopping malls (employers who silently feel it more “cost effective” to hire younger Americans still living at home looking for some extra Christmas money and/or the endless supply of work visa carrying individuals spending over half of those American dollars outside of the United States) and finding a 3 day shut off notice stuffed in your door (This actually DID happen to me and left me contemplating some very horrible thoughts).
DG
November 13, 2008, 11:55pm (report abuse)I’M PLEADING with every elected official and especially President Bush to take off the political party hat for a while (We promise….. we’ll turn our heads and won’t look & honestly won’t think any less of you) and COME TOGETHER….BOTH DEMOCRATS AND RPUBLICANS…. on this extremely important sensitive issue that strikes right to the very core of the “working men/women” of this great country…..ignoring this will cause some very irreversible consequences….mark my words! WE are the very same people that elected you into office and are now PLEADING for your consideration in return during one of the most frightening times of our lives.
DG
November 13, 2008, 11:58pm (report abuse)President BUSH….. Although I honestly believe the way you handled some issues and political agendas while in office could have been handled differently. I’m sure after the dust settles on this economic disaster we obviously are in, all the positive things you’ve contributed to this country (And you definitely have) will start to take on a more solid form in the legacy of your Presidency. It’s easy for us to raise the finger and point, especially considering current events, but PLEASE why not leave the office helping those Americans in desperate need of your support on this dire issue, get back some of the dignity, security and confidence this recession has stripped us of. THIS would genuinely be a gesture worthy of an American President.
God Bless,
“Joe the Plumber”

November 14, 2008, 5:39pm (report abuse)If this extension does not pass, there will be so many people trying to get welfare, foodstamps, medicare, housing help, etc. Don't you see, this needs to pass. It will cost more to help all of those who are homeless and jobless. We need this bill to pass and quickly please, not much time left.

November 14, 2008, 5:41pm (report abuse)excuse me a**hole what I meant was there is not even a job available for moving manure........why don't you tell me what you contribute to this great country of ours a**hole..other then your obvious bad attitude. You know what my guess is that you are a fat bitter piece of sh*t who still lives with their mom and you are single of course because no one wants an a**hole for a husband. November 14, 2008, 6:05pm (report abuse)I've been unemployed for 2 years (Happy Thankgiving! Make another meatloaf in the shape of a turkey or carve one from a can of Spam this year)! I have had hundreds of interviews. I'm a 55yrS young medical professional. Other than hospitals, clinics and labs I have applied to McDonalds, Walmart, Kmart, Goodwill and more!! Think my age has something to do with it? Duh! Good Grief! I sell my blood 2X a week so I can get some groceries and gas. Maybe I'll get the big 'A' and then I won't have to worry about it anymore!
BUT I KEEP TRYING!

November 14, 2008, 7:05pm (report abuse)So you just described yourself for the rest of the world. I'll bet living in your mom's basement is really fun for you. Probably makes it tough to get a "friend" to come over though.

November 15, 2008, 12:30pm (report abuse)I was laid off in February of 2008.I have been looking for employmet on a daily base. No one has called. I have recall and went back to check on app. No one is hiring in my area on anything that I qualify for. My unemployment income and EUC benefits has also exhausted. WHAT DO WE DO.? My bill can not be paid. I'm receiving call daily from creditors. We are caught up in a mess. I can disconnect my phone, alarm which will help but then that cause other problems. My homeowner insurance goes up, which is due and have no way of paying so I will also lose that. Then there no coverage on the home. No phone I will not being able to get a call if my resume does interest someone. Can we please get another extended on unemployment. My BYE date is next year but by then I will have lost everything. I did budget and kind of stayed up on my payments. Now I can not do that. Praying that jobs will open up for us.But in Chatta,TN need help now.Can we get an answer?

November 15, 2008, 3:55pm (report abuse)For those concerned about unemployment in the U.S. there are several bills listed that would INCREASE the numbers of immigrant visas and allow foreign workers to take our jobs. Take a look at:
S. 1092
The High-Tech Worker Relief Act of 2007
H.R. 5924
The Emergency Nursing Supply Relief Act
H.R. 6039
To amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to authorize certain aliens who have earned a master's or higher degree from a United States institution of higher education in a field of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics to be admitted for permanent residence

November 15, 2008, 6:49pm (report abuse)The Senate will take up the EXTENSION of UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS next week but they disgustingly said they will add the Auto Industry bailout too, and the Republicans are against the bailout so hopefully if that gets defeated then they will go ahead and pass the UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION for 13 weeks but I wish it was for 26 weeks and hopefully President Obama & majority Senate in January will do something additional. Its amazing that the Congress and Senate can shove the bailouts down our throats for $700 Billion and $25 Billion dollars while the banks and corporations like AIG are having parties in luxury hotel rooms for $1600 a day with spas, pedicures, etc, yet they keep playing around with the Extension of Unemployment bill. Disgusting isn't it?.
.
November 15, 2008, 8:02pm (report abuse)No, not really. Why should the country bail you out? Do you think two wrongs make a right?
Rob
November 15, 2008, 8:07pm (report abuse)Um "really," you should not let for really get arise out of you, hes probably just some angry emo kid trying to piss people off and for really, I'm guessing your parents don't listen to you but you shouldn't play on the Big Boy sites okay? Go play a game or something and let the adults talk.
My opinion on unemployment is they should really pass it. Simply because people with education and degrees can't even make ends meet. Isn't that what college is for
security? If this keeps up there will be no motivation for people to go to college simply because they'll be working at McDonald's along with high school drop outs. Our country does not have their priorities straight whatsoever. There are people who spent thousands to get a degree that they might as well wipe their ass with now!!!

November 15, 2008, 8:57pm (report abuse)Look, the ones who have a job need to get lost, get off this site and go wash your BMW. People are hurting and NO ONE is lazy or asking for handouts IDIOT. Our country is in HUGE problems, companies are closing left and right. Just to name a few, Linens N Things, Circuit City ect.. WATCH THE NEWS JA@OFFS... It is NOT our fault Bushwacker has sent this country into a downward spriral. So, instead of taking smack.. GET US A JOB WITH YOU moneybags, If not take a hike, fly a kite, or go f*ck yourself. How come you are not taking about the bailouts? Just the unemployed people trying to find a job? Why dont all the "working" people go do something else. Who is the loser? Hmmmmm Carma will getcha! HA

November 16, 2008, 2:24am (report abuse)For those who are blowing a gasket and going off - it really does nothing to help justify your position, and really lessens any credibility you may have, when you make those kinds of postings. Would it not serve all of you better to simply stick to pertinent points?

November 16, 2008, 6:54pm (report abuse)Is this version the latest that Harry Reid intends to push for in the 11-17 to 11-19 session? If yes, does anyone think maybe the Dems are just waiting to add more weeks with the huge upcoming stimulus in the new Congress, and at least they can get something now during the lame duck session? I need this so bad. Jobs are nonexistent here.

November 17, 2008, 12:39pm (report abuse)I am for another extension of unemployment benefits. I have worked consistantly since I was 15 yrs old. I lost my job about a year and a half ago and have exhausted my regular benefits and the first extension. I have been looking for work since then with no luck. I have experience in many areas and still can not find work. For the people who say passing another extension would encourage people to stay out of work have not seen the difference in pay between a work check and an unemployment check. My unemployment was less than half of what I was bringing home weekly from my job. So while unemployment has helped me, it was not enough to make me want to stay home and collect. I have a 5 yr old and i'm expecting another child. Hopefully with a new president and talks of changing our economy around I will be able to find work. I have a family to provide for like many others. If not, i'm afraid that an extension will be the only thing to bail people out of this terribly tough time.

jobless in Indiana
November 17, 2008, 3:51pm (report abuse)I sympathize and relate to everyone out there that is jobless and looking for work that is not available. I have been a work-a-holic my whole life working two jobs or 12 hour days and now I have no job at all due to the economy/downsizing. I am a professional and each job I apply for I am told they receive about 1000 applicants. I have never seen anything like this-the country needs an economic boost! Everyday more and more jobs are lost in this area. I have applied for jobs that pay a small fraction of what I was paid, and still no job. Please extend unemployment benefits!
IT COULD BE U
November 17, 2008, 4:01pm (report abuse)To all those who are trying to put people unemployed dwn and say were lazy. Ill trade places with you anyday. It has nothing to do wit suit and tie. There aint no jobs out there.
Still Unemployed
November 17, 2008, 4:05pm (report abuse)For all you ignorant people that say to "Just Get A Job"...I was let go from my place of employment after 12 years of dedication and good work. I was let go after giving birth to my first child. And it sounds so cliche but I am a single mother. But not one to have ever been on unemployment EVER! And here I am looking for a job for a year now and it is hard with a one year old. I also have a college degree and am very well qualified to do many jobs.AND I HAVE APPLIED!!!
It is not that easy at all. So again, for all of you ignorant people who think most people just MOOCH, there are most who are serious and want to work and not be be put in the pot with the assumption of being lazy, not wanting to work, etc. So before trying to talk about things that you know nothing about and situations that you have not experienced...keep your mouth shut and enjoy your life now...because one day it might be you on unemployment hoping for an extension and me working calling you a MOOCHER!

November 17, 2008, 4:24pm (report abuse)Why are they bailing out the big car company's. They only wanted to give new cars to people with perfect credit. You don't see a used car lot going out of business. Forget the cars, pass the unemployment. Let the Big 3 see what it feels like to hear "Sorry we can't seem to get you financed". Also, how can people find a job when all you see is lay offs, shut downs and low hours. Also, these bailouts need to help us, the consumers. Bail me out of something. I don't care if you just paid one of my bills for one month. It would show bailouts are for everyone.

November 17, 2008, 5:30pm (report abuse)The auto industry "bailout" is a loan and has strings. Are you willing to pay back the extended benefits, even at zero interest, when you find a job? I seriously doubt that.

November 17, 2008, 6:32pm (report abuse)First of all for the fellow unemployed don't listen to the idiots that talk smack...don't let them get arise out of you cuz karma is a b^tch...2nd and most important the update on the bill....they should have it passed by weds. It's pretty much a done deal..the only thing that they need to decide on is how much they are giving out...so no worries..

November 18, 2008, 1:22am (report abuse)Not looking good. Reid is insisting on tacking the extension onto the big 3 auto loan plan. There does not appear to be enough support for that to make it through the senate. Bad juju.

November 18, 2008, 1:16pm (report abuse)Please pass this extension to give us more time to search for jobs. We need help! No one wants to live on the streets, crime rates are going to go up, and suicide rates will go up. Something needs to be done fast...

November 18, 2008, 1:20pm (report abuse)article off the webpage.
November 17 Update: The National Employment Law Project is asking for assistance in getting the Senate to pass an unemployment extension. They suggest calling 1-800-473-6711, asking to speak with your Senators’ offices, and telling them that unemployment is a national crisis and that you need them to pass the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2008.

November 18, 2008, 2:08pm (report abuse)Our family is facing fore closer on a house that has lost 30% of its value from when we bought it 2 years ago. We put all our savings into it at 6% 30 year loan and now we cant sell it even at a huge loss. Without an extension of unemployment benefits we cant support our home with one income. Im so stressed out. We have no money left. We have gone though all our raining day savings. What will Christmas be like for our children?
What happens now?
All those years we saved for a house. Keeping up perfect credit. Thinking we would be live the American dream. Now were will we end up? Homeless, broke and bad credit.
What do we do?

November 18, 2008, 4:47pm (report abuse)This unemployment extension needs to be passed now.
All these fatcats in WDC need to know that we Americans need help, NOT the wall street fat cats, the big 3 auto makers or anyone else for that matter.
How is that we can afford to send $10 billion a month on a war we cannot win and not our own?
To those arrogant ones who say GET A JOB, go fly a kite. One day you may be out of a job and I hope someone isn't as mean to you as you have to been us posters who are down on our luck.

November 18, 2008, 11:33pm (report abuse)Hey Dip****, I've sent out COUNTLESS resumes. I can't even tell you how many.
You arrogant pompous ass. You have NO idea what I went through this last year. When my unemployment ran out the first time, I took 3 minimum wage jobs. 3 my friend.
All at once. 2 places closed down and one laid me off as business was extremely slow. I was the newest on the totem pole.
THEN I worked all types of odd jobs to put food on the table. Those ran out as they were only 1, 2 day situations.
I had to swallow my pride and eat in the soup kitchen a couple of days a week to stretch my food budget. I also scavenged for cans and bottles to take to the recycling center for extra money.
So the next time you think about flapping your trap and making a supposition about my situation, think again.
One day my friend YOU could be out of a job and in the same situation as a lot of us.
