August 9, 2008, 11:51am (report abuse)Although no one would know it from the text, this sneaky bill would enlarge Oregon Caves National Monument ten-fold. Further, this is being attempted at a time when there is a vigorous contrary effort which seeks to retgurn the monument to the Forest Service, or transfer it to Oregon State Parks or Josephine County. Thnis is because of the deplorable failure of stewardship by the NPS in its 74 years of administration of the cave. Sneaky bills like this one demonstrate what is wrong with Congress. Hearings on it should be held in Grants Pass, Portland, and Washington, D.C.
