April 8, 2008, 10:50am (report abuse)I have been unemployed since my employer of 27 years let me go. I am 58 have a BA degree, and have worked all my life. Now I can't even find a minimum wage job. THe fact that Republicans voted down an extension just shows how far from real America they are. They can spend 12 billion a year in Iraq but forget the middle class that are out of work here. Bush is the worst president we have ever had.

Well as we know the economy is horrible forxs are at a all time high, and there are absolutely no jobs to be found. I have a college degree many years of experience and cant find a job! My benefits run out in 2 months, please pass this bill soon~!!

April 8, 2008, 4:08pm (report abuse)I spoke with a rep yesterday from unemployment and I was told that this bill has been on President Bush desk and he wont sign. They said the problem is as follows: once you exhaust your unemployment, your name is removed from the unemployment stats and in such we are no longer being accounted for. So they are not receiving statistically an accurate account of the millions of unemployed people in the USA. Only the ones receiving unemployment. In turn, President Bush does not see the full impact this economy has had on the people of this country. Plus he hopes that the stimulus check will bounce back the country. Get real! That is like putting a bandage on a broken leg. Let your congressmen and women know that you are one of those unaccounted country men/women who are still unemployed.

April 9, 2008, 7:42am (report abuse)And further more! My friends who live in Southern Cal and in Phoenix Az. Who both work for Electronics firms and lost their jobs in the fall last year. And now benefits have run out and the only option is bankruptcy. They can’t find jobs! And I here in South NJ And can’t find anything! Whoops I shouldn’t say that. I could work 3 hours a night for UPS 12 to 3am for 8.50 and hour. I live 30 miles away gas is $3 a gallon that’s min of 2 gallons per night. 6 bucks, Taxes on a 127.50 a week whatever that is, 25 a week for Union dues, leaves me 72.50 before taxes weekly. Wow I could go far on that! VV More VV

You would think he makes a good living. No he does not! Really!! He has a very large orange grove and this past season he put more into everything needed to produce a crop than he made. This is how this worked. See for years Brazilian companies have secretly purchased all the juice companies in his area. And now they control the market in Florida. They only pay what they deem a fair price. I his case 15k for his whole crop. He hires union Brazilians to pick his crop at 7500.00 he moves the oranges to plant. He ends up with 7500.00. But he pays 9000 to maintain his crop. He out 1500.00. Free trade I don’t think so……

With the number of UI beneficiaries exhausting their claims already on the rise and no end in sight to the current economic downturn, the report argues that past Republican obstructionism must be overcome in order to provide extended UI benefits for those in need......

April 9, 2008, 2:34pm (report abuse)Unemployment rates quoted ARE inaccurate. A report of those LOOKING for work valid. As a former mortgage employee, I lost 2 jobs to downsizing. My unemployment benefits are exhausted. An extension is required. But some members of Congress believe we wait until benefits end, and then look for a job.
Another issue is health insurance. If I don't find a job with benefits by August, I will be uninsured. Paying $500 a month for COBRA coverage is hard, but a gap gives insurance companies the ability to deny a claim, saying it was pre-existing.
The we have age discrimination. Most laid off where I worked are over 50. Most kept are under 25. That's interesting, don't you think? Age discrimination is rampant. A recent local news article was titled "Retaining the Talented Young." The writer wasn't promoting age discrimination, but his article proves it is in our area.

Bush is going to cause a lot of people to loose their houses and everything in life they have worked so hard for. I don't get why he won't pass it, if you don't pass it then you have more people foreclosing and running up debt, thus making the mortgage crisis a whole lot worse than it is now and thus making people spend a lot less in the stores because you have to scrape to pay your bills, let alone go on a shopping spree with the money you don't have! Oh wait that's right we are all supposed to go shopping with these rebate checks!!! HA HA HA! That's a joke all in itself because with the majority of people unemployed those rebates will go strictly for bills and bills only - so that plan will backfire right into Bushs face!! I HAVE CONTINUED TO HOLD A FULL TIME JOB AFTER GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND ALSO A VOCATIONAL SCHOOL. WELL MY LAST JOB OF 14 YEARS WAS FORCED TO SELL OUT TO OUR COMPETITORS AND AFTER 6 MONTHS OF UNEMPLOYMENT I STILL HAVE NO JOB AND NO PROSPECTS. MY HUSBAND WAS INJURED ON THE JOB AND THEN WHEN THEY FOUND OUT HE NEEDED SURGERY HE WAS LAID OFF. HOW CAN ANYONE MAKE A MORTGAGE PAYMENT ON UMEMPLOYMENT LET ALONE PAY ANY OTHER BILL. ESPECIALLY NOW THAT MY 26 WEEKS OF UNEMPLOYMENT ARE UP WHAT DO WE DO? LOSE EVERYTHING WE HAVE WORKED SO HARD FOR. THEY NEED TO EXTEND THE BENEFITS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

Considering I've got 2 college degrees and years of diverse work experience, I'm not even having luck finding a minimum wage job. I've been off now nearly a year and have exhausted my IRA in order to keep my house - and have had to pay a significant amount to Fed. Inc. Tax in penalties just to keep my house and health insurance. What's wrong with this picture?

I don't understand what's taking them so long when they know that the unemployment rate is high, there is lack of jobs, and the economy is down. Something needs to be done ASAP.

I wonder if that is the reason why you cannot obtain a job.

I am willing to work, but no one seems interested in an employee w/restrictions. My benefits are almost over. I have no idea how my family will survive. Being a nurse, I never thought i would have trouble finding a job. The depression is overwhelming.

The gov. needs to get with it and pass the extesion already. how much more can we put up with we need the money for gas to go on interviews. Wake up and smell the coffee.

I already lost two jobs this year and prior to that I stayed with companies on average of 2.5 years. My last job didn't employ me long enough to even establish eligibilty for unemployment and now i have two weeks left. Most emergency type jobs tell me I am overqualified...I guess I will have to start living in a van down by the river or a refridgerator box. Maybe I will eat trash or something. idk. I guess the senators and such don't have to worry about getting let go since they can already give themselves raises. please pass this bill!

April 30, 2008, 2:54am (report abuse)I'll bet the number of jobs being created in this economy today isn't even close to the number of jobs U.S. corporations are giving away to foreign countries. so sad that our gov't can't/won't even figure out how to solve our ongoing health care crisis. but, u.s companies make sure those cheap wage foreign employees are taken care of and with health benefits too. why doesn't the gov't just hold a huge u.s. auction house for foreigner's to come and buy up our foreclosed homes too. They could call it the "orient express american sellout" Maybe I can get a job cleaning houses for one of our brilliant government leaders or for some foreigner who has bought out a troubled u.s. business. The reality of this situation just demands a revolt by the people.

I had to leave California and move to Navada to come and live with my daughter. If it wasn't for her I would be living on the streets. I have never faced such a hard time of trying to find work and I have been in my career field for 27 years. I heard on the news that sales of high ticketed items are booming and sales have never been better because all the weathy people are out shopping and buying everthing up. Hell I can't even afford to put gas in my car in case I get a call for a job interview. This is just the most disturbing times I have ever lived in. Please people lets stand togeather and get this bill passed!

May 1, 2008, 12:27pm (report abuse)Its disturbing and supportive to see other people having the same struggles like myself. I am disgusted by the comments of those who got on here and berated us all for being whining babies. I was not only abruptly laid off in August of 2007, I was never given my final paycheck from the company I worked for. Who plans for that??? The corporation filed Chapter 11 and employees were put in line with the banks...guess who gets paid first, if ever. It is so discouraging waking up every morning and sending out resumes to everyone and their mother and never getting a call. Its also embarassing every time you see someone and they ask, "any luck?". The answer is always the same..."No." Really puts your self-worth into check. I will not rely on my government to find me a job, if they no longer require me to pay their salaries with my taxes. I thought that was the whole idea...did I miss something???

I have worked most of my life and payed taxes and have payed my fare share of taxes including taxes on my unemployment. I was layed off my job back in October and despite all of my efforts to find a new job I have had no luck and now my unemployment has run out and I feel totally abandoned by my own goverment. I am not even sure this is my beloved country anymore, are you?

I am getting married and living off of my husband to be but I ffel like a burden. I went to a 4-year university and I used to have great jobs..now I feel like nothing. We have to buy more rice nowadays in order to stretch food :-(

You should be wise to help those in need, so they will help you when you are in need. That's the way it is supposed to work. It is greed that has ruined our country, not giving to help others. You want to hoard up for yourself more rather than share the taxes we all pay? You may be the one who will have no right to whine and ask for help when you are in that situation

Our spelling and grammar are due to only 1000 characters allowed Most of us unemployed now are highly educated and normally highly salaried people but that does not make us better than those unable to obtain a better education or disabled We are not Nazis...are you? We believe that all men are created equal. Also, expound on what you feel makes you so much better than the rest of us? We'd like a good laugh. I challenge you to be brave enough to make a list and post it here why you are much better than us. Because you're employed? Please broaden on that.

May 3, 2008, 1:30am (report abuse)Neither Democrats nor Republicans have any intention of extending unemployment...the democrats just want to sound good Let us remember, when the living God pulls us through these tough times, to remember and help others when we can again. Pray it makes us more compassionate still to those less fortunate and to all. Let's remember how cruel others have been to us so we can be kind when it is our turn. Let's not get angry. Let us be “as poor, yet making many rich.” They remove God's laws which means they remove love. "For all the law is summed up in this, thou shalt love they neighbor as thyself. Love works no ill to his neighbor therefore love fulfills the law"...that's what it is all about...don't lie, don't steal, etc, it's not rules and regulations. We break God's laws and hurt one another but by His grace we have forgiveness through His blood to all who believe, the Passover Lamb. He is my treasure.
Feeling Abandoned
May 4, 2008, 2:23am (report abuse)I never realized how much control other people have over us. I use to think and believe that I controlled my own destiny. I had a great job with great pay and I felt in-control and was happy with my life, than your boss calls you into his office and says we have to lay you off because of a slowdown at work and you try to find another job but its the same story everywhere you go and six months later your unemployment is gone and more and more people are losing their jobs and now we have to beg our goverment to give us an extention. Where is God? because He sure as hell isn't in the Whitehouse!
