June 22, 2007, 4:01pm (report abuse)Danielle Gruskowski, a 32 year-old woman who suffered from Rett Syndrome-a neurological disorder that affects motor movements and the ability to communicate-required 24-hour care because of her condition. On the evening of November 4, 2002, she experienced difficult breathing for over 14 hours, 105 degree temperature, and panic breathing, yet none of the caregivers at her Edison, New Jersey group home called 911 to save her precious life Danielle died the next day.
Due to the tireless efforts of Danielle's family and The Family Alliance to Stop Abuse and Neglect, Gov. James McGreevey signed into law legislation, known as Danielle's Law, on October 26, 2003. NJ sponors to the law are State Senators Joe Vitale (D-19) and Tom Kean JR (R-21) and Assemblymen Guy Greg (R-24) and Eric Munoz (R-21), requires that people who work directly with the developmentally disabled or people with traumatic brain injury to call 911 in the event of a life-threatening situation.

August 4, 2008, 11:33am (report abuse)This legislation will save lives and help prevent the occurance of additional disabilities. This Bill will also reinforce in caregivers mind the importance of proper medical care. I was Danielle's Healthcare Manager. Her death was just the last of a long string of misteps group home staff made in caring for this youg woman. New Jersey DD service system has just made a mockery of our state law in its implementation of the law. You could learn what not to do in reviewing the chaos the state created.
