S. 100 would encourage the health of children in schools by promoting better nutrition and increased physical activity.
Detailed Summary
Healthy Students Act of 2007 - Amends the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act to require the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to establish a Commission to Improve School Meals composed of nutrition and children's health experts tasked with developing new nutritional standards for the School Lunch, Summer Food Service, Child and Adult Care Food, and School Breakfast programs. Requires such standards to ban foods of minimal nutritional value. Provides for the adjustment of program payment rates to compensate for compliance with such standards.
Repeals the current requirement that the Secretary of Agriculture (Secretary) issue guidance to states and school food authorities to increase the consumption of foods and food ingredients recommended in the most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans.<br>
Requires the Secretary to establish a pilot program providing grants to school districts or nonprofit organizations for use in promoting healthy food alternatives under the School Lunch and School Breakfast programs.
Directs the Secretary of Education to award competitive grants to elementary and secondary schools for Healthy Hour pilot programs which increase each school day by an hour that is exclusively devoted to physical activity.
Amends the Public Health Service Act to establish a student loan forgiveness program for nurses who agree to employment as full-time nurses in elementary or secondary schools for three complete school years.
Amends the Internal Revenue Code to allow corporations a tax deduction for the charitable contribution to a private foundation of exercise or gymnasium equipment for use by elementary and secondary school students.

March 10, 2007, 5:23pm (report abuse)As a professional this bill is essential to us making a step in being "proactive" against childhood obesity. This bill covers 2 very valuable factors: nutrition and physical activity. However I wish there was a section for R.D. loan forgiveness.

April 3, 2007, 8:46am (report abuse)As a professional and a mother of two school-age children I see a need for increased nutrition awareness for our children and educators. I believe french fries and tater tots do not belong on the lunch menu, this bill will ban foods of minimal nutritional value and provide grants to promote healthy food alternatives. Statistics show childhood obesity which can lead to diabetes is on the rise and Bill S.100 can prevent this from happening.

May 3, 2007, 10:40am (report abuse)There is an old saying that says, "You are what you eat" if we put garbage in then we will in return get garbage from our children. Food is supposed to nourish our bodies and give us not only physical strenghth but mental strenghth as well. This bill is great! Our children are hyperactive and have a hard time concentrating in school but with a healthy diet drastic changes in moods and behaviors will change. They dont need medication, just a change in their eating habits. I strongly support this bill, I feel it is long overdue.

May 4, 2007, 3:43pm (report abuse)As a pediatric nurse and nurse practitioner, I see the effects of childhood overweight and obesity on a daily basis. America's children need all the help that they can get, and this bill is attempting to meet that need by improving their nutrition and physical activity. I have created a petition to support S. 100, if you would like to sign, the website is:

Let us tell Congress that our children need their support.
