October 20, 2008, 12:33am (report abuse)Support this BILL!! It's the right thing to do. People mess up, they serve there time but how much time do they need. Sitting in a prison away from realy life is not going to make life any better for those who need to fix what they have done. Their families suffer more then anyone and we need your support to get them back home. Our country needs money and what a great way to save thousands and thousands of dollors by getting people who have severed time out of the prison system and back in their communities. working. Prison's don't work loving and caring people do!!

October 21, 2008, 1:50pm (report abuse)I eel that this is a good thing.
I think everyone of us can remember a time when we wished we could take something back.If inmates have served there sentence in accordance with this bill then they deserve a second chance.Freedom is what our country is built on so if having earned back there small piece of freedom should be granted.

October 21, 2008, 2:30pm (report abuse)Look at recidivism - 4 out of 5 federal inmates return to prison within one year of release. They are criminals, they should serve their terms. Most of these posts are by women, probably spouses of inmates. The same inmates that correspond with wives and multiple girlfriends while in jail too, open your eyes and realize the type of people they really are!
ELIZABETH
October 21, 2008, 3:39pm (report abuse)I THINK THIS BILL SHOULD BE PASSED. SOME PEOPLE DESERVE TO HAVE A SECOND CHANCE. WOULDN'T YOU WANT A SECOND CHANCE TO IF THE SHOE WERE ON THE OTHER FOOT?

October 21, 2008, 3:50pm (report abuse)Yes! This bill should pass. I have a nephew that has been locked up for a number of years now. I believe that everyone deserves a second chance at life. Please allow this bill to pass so that he can be with his children and family. I do believe with all my heart that with the love and support that he has of family since being locked up has made a major impact on his life. He has had enough time served for his actions and deserves to be released back into society as a good productive citizen. This would also taks such a burden mentally and financially off of the family and tax payers.
We believe God in advance for the passing of this bill. We have missed out on 9 years of his life and he of his children and family that LOVE him so much. He is sorry for what he did, and really deserves this opportunity to prove himself.
Denise
October 21, 2008, 4:00pm (report abuse)Please pass this bill, I support this bill 100%, We pray tO god that this bill is passed for federal inmates and their families. This bill will give a second chance, and hope to woman and men. My son sentence was 19 years. He have not seen his 5 children. We cant afford to go see him because he's so far,yes he was wrong, But 19 yrs is a long time. Please please pass this bill number H.R 7089.
Tamara
October 21, 2008, 4:10pm (report abuse)Yes! Please pass this bill people deserve a second chance. My cousin has been locked up for 9 years too long. Allow him to be with his family 19 years is too long of a sentence.

October 21, 2008, 4:13pm (report abuse)This is a long awaited bill for all involved. Families need to be together. So many if our children are being raised without their parents. No wonder this society is in the shape that it is. With head of households out and working the welfare need would dramatically drop.

October 21, 2008, 4:45pm (report abuse)Please pass this bill, I support this bill 100%, We pray to God that this bill is passed for federal inmates and their families. This bill will give a second chance, and hope to woman and men. please pass this bill number H.R 7089.

October 21, 2008, 5:57pm (report abuse)They should serve full sentences. They knew the consequences beforehand and committed crimes anyway. 99% are repeat offenders with long records.
Debbi
October 21, 2008, 8:31pm (report abuse)I agree 100%, if the federal goverment would release some of these inmates it would save them tons of taxpayers money. Not only in the amount that it cost us to house these inmates but the hundreds of families that are on goverment assistance because of a spouse that is doing a ridicules amount of time for something that he/she may or may not have done. Come on show some compassion!!
Fedup
October 22, 2008, 3:10am (report abuse)I believe an inmate should do every day of their sentence. They took the gamble and they lost. Very few ever learn a lesson because their nature simply is to get over on the system and society.
SharonL
October 22, 2008, 3:19am (report abuse)Taxpayer money could be saved by seizing more of their assets, and holding the criminals more accountable. Jail does not teach a person to be more of a criminal, the "criminal" comes to jail and networks to further his arsenal of deviant behavior. The very few that truly want to change do so, but the vast majority need to be behind bars. I hope this bill does not pass and saner minds prevail.
Georgieboy
October 22, 2008, 3:25am (report abuse)No to H.R. 7089! Has the world gone mad!! Many inmates are serving their time for drug offenses - drugs in communities foster crime, violence, theft, burglaries, gang activity, overdoses and addicts. Just because these "angels" don't have violence in their file doesn't mean they didn't directly contribute to the problems in society! They are just as low and dirty as the crook who steals from my home! You did the crime, now do your time! If your families were smart they'd move on to better days without you and your evil ways.
Realityguy
October 22, 2008, 3:33am (report abuse)The only people in support of this bill are criminals and their families who benefited from the criminal behavior. Society is far better off with these people exactly where they are, incarcerated. The time to feel sad about the family being torn apart and daddy not being home for the kids was before he decided to live a criminal lifestyle. These guys weren't picked up at Wal-Mart for stealing a candy bar, they are career criminals who worked there way right up to the Feds by engaging in crimes of a serious nature over a long period of time, hence the cases that were built against them!

October 22, 2008, 8:29am (report abuse)Not everyone in prison is a bad person. Some made one mistake. Their prior record should be reviewed and maybe there is another less costly way of punishing them. Their families are really punished also. The BOP system, I'm sure does the best that they can do but it is not good enough. I think it makes young inmates worse not better.
Mrs. Lacy
October 22, 2008, 1:45pm (report abuse)People should be looking at this as an econmic relief. Its could benefit so many, and not only the families of the incarerated. 1 out of 100 people are in prison, think of how many families that effects though. It cost 30,000 to 50,000 a year to house inmates just for there basic needs. Now the federal population is past 200,000 inmates. All serving very long terms, mostly from mandatory sentencng. No parole. Giving parole back to some extent would put money back into pocket of the tax payers. Look at all the benefits. Family reunifactions and more money.
Mrs. Jones
October 22, 2008, 4:51pm (report abuse)I believe everyone deserves a second chance at life. I have read several comments from people who are against the bill, stating that once a criminal always a criminal. Remember this bill was introduced for nonviolent offenders, this is not for murderers. The crimes that prompted these long over drawn sentences are nonviolent crimes, these men/women DO deserve a second chance just like any one else that makes a mistake. No one said let them out without doing any time, but the sentences that are given are just ridiculous. I agree, do the crime do the time however a reasonable amount of time. Not getting more time for selling drugs then you would for MURDER! LETS BE REAL. I support this bill 100%.
Linda
October 22, 2008, 6:18pm (report abuse)I think this bill would really work for those who deserve it....so I hope that the bill is passed into law....because there a a lot of people in prison who have learned something from the experience of being in prison....and probably can turn the negitibe into a positive by helping others like today's youth who are going in the wrong direction........
David
October 22, 2008, 6:38pm (report abuse)I believe this bill will physiologically cause the prisoners to want to do better and be better in society, in general, instead of giving up and continuing to cause problems to society.
john
October 22, 2008, 8:49pm (report abuse)this is a good bill it will help save money for the us and it will give people a change to come to they family plus if they stay out of trouble the come home faster so it give them reason to not get in trouble
Dawn
October 22, 2008, 9:14pm (report abuse)Our tax money could really be put to better use. After these inmates have proven to deserve a second chance, why not closely monitor them on the outside with tax money? As they sit in prison, many sons and daughters are not being raised by their mothers/fathers and will most likely find themselves following in their footsteps. It seems like a negative cycle to get caught up in.

October 22, 2008, 9:32pm (report abuse)"When you judge another, you do not define them, you define yourself."- Wayne Dyer Quote
This Bill is great, there are so many alternatives to incarceration. The entire system needs to change especially in areas where there is low classification like a Federal Prison Camp or Federal Correction Institution. The FPC or FCI housing for them alone suggest that there should be another alternative in place. Perhaps home confinement, community service, ankle bracelet or an early release; so many other alternatives. This Bill puts families back together, I totally support this Bill, let us give them an opportunity to mend their families and their lives. Let each of us be the change we want to see........
Cindy
October 23, 2008, 1:47pm (report abuse)Please give them a chance to make a fresh start and move on with their lives* I support this Bill and yes there are so many ways to help other than incarceration* Support groups are wonderful...please lets give these people a chance to start over and make a new life with their families and friends*

October 23, 2008, 2:55pm (report abuse)Please pass this bil, people deserve a second chance. My son has been incarcerated for 6 years. Allow him to be with his family, 14 years is too long of a sentence.

October 23, 2008, 4:05pm (report abuse)I believe this bill will help bring a lot of families together again . My son has already been incarcerated for half of his sentence ,whish is punishment enough, please pass this bill.

October 23, 2008, 4:44pm (report abuse)I believe HR 7089 will help many families put there life back together. We shuold all support this bill, and give these men and women a second chance.

October 24, 2008, 6:28pm (report abuse)I AGREE THAT EVERYONE DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE..I WILL BE VOTING IN FAVOR. MY SON WAS 1 1/2 WHEN HIS DAD WENT AWAY AND WILL BE 15 WHEN HE RETURNS. THE GUIDELINES ARE WAY OUT OF LINE AND THEN TO ADD THE 85% RULE TO THAT, THERE IS NO WAY FOR THESE MEN AND WOMAN TO REDEEM THEMSELVES...AND YES LETS MAKE SURE THE WORD "RETROACTIVE" IS INCLUDED.
Brianna
October 24, 2008, 8:51pm (report abuse)They knew the consequences before they got into trouble, and it didn't stop them from breaking the law. Letting them go home early certainly isn't going to change their deviant behaviors. No to 7089 for this voter. Anyone who thinks drug dealing is non-violent should spend a weekend in an emergency room watching overdose victims fighting for their lives. Somebody gave them the loaded weapon (illicit drugs).

October 24, 2008, 9:59pm (report abuse)I believe this bill is the right thing to do, especially in this economy. It would ease the financial crisis and overcrowding in the federal prisons. I personally think the wrong people are in jail. If we make some room we could start with the Greedy CEO's and work our way down to the Greedy Attorneys. Thier crimes have been more devastating and criminal than most of your drug offenses.
Copper
October 25, 2008, 2:36pm (report abuse)The drain on the economy was the criminals wasting valuable justice system resources having to bring them to justice: Law enforcement, the courts, clerical support, prosecutors - not only should they serve their full terms but they should be held until they repay the entire cost of bringing them to justice. Takes the burden of paying for police off the tax payers and puts it on the criminal's family...

October 25, 2008, 10:41pm (report abuse)I have a very dear friend in federal prison. She did something stupid but she is not a threat to anyone. So many lives are being ruined by overly harsh sentences. First time offenders should get enough prison time to scare them, then put them on supervised release. If they conduct themselves well, leave them alone. If they break the law again, THEN send them to prison for a long time. Please pass this bill and stop destroying the lives of the inmates and the lives of their families. We all suffer the loss of our friends and family members.

October 26, 2008, 10:24am (report abuse)My brother is seving a 14 yr sentence, has been for 6yrs,my brother has been away from his children all this years they need to be reunited,he loves his children dearly and they miss him too. So please pass this BILL, my brother a good man I PRAY EVERYDAY FOR HIM!

October 26, 2008, 5:07pm (report abuse)I am in total agreement..these harsh extradinary long sentences destroys family relationships. I know it destroyed my relationship with the man I loved. At a time when young people should be building families it ripped our dreams of a having a family totally apart. I will be told old to have a child when he is released and neither one of us could live with that hurt. Fed prisons barely let you get one kiss let alone a conjugal for those is child bearing years. My sadness is unamaginable.

October 26, 2008, 5:09pm (report abuse)I see the same stories in these posts. "Poor us, poor Johnny. He needs to be home." Johnny should have stopped his criminal ways before he went to prison - that's when the children needed him, but he was out breaking the law. I hope the current system of incarceration stands.

October 27, 2008, 10:50pm (report abuse)Please pass this bill

October 28, 2008, 1:57pm (report abuse)I am sure that many people feel that these men and women should pay for breaking the law. But, the system is really screwed on the length of time they give them. They are basically not giving them a chance to do right. I am sure that if the shoe was on the other foot and it was one of your family members locked up you would want them home too. Have the system changed to give these men and women a chance to be productive citizens again.
Teresa New Iberia, La.
October 28, 2008, 8:33pm (report abuse)Many non violent sentences are to harsh in the federal system. If the person had no prior criminal history they should be given a second chance at life. Many people get longer sentences than people who actually commit murder. I am definitely in favor of bill 7089.

October 29, 2008, 2:00pm (report abuse)Realityman, my son is in prison for 8 years, on a telemarketing charge. The amount of $ IS 6000.00. My son and three other managers are setting in camps for 5 to 10 years. this is not right.

October 29, 2008, 6:26pm (report abuse)Instead of paying the prision system so much money to house these men that could be productive tax payers, why not let them come out to reform and employment to make this a better country. Return fathers to their wives and children, return male positive role models to our communities. Lets get America back to the Country we know it to be, we have to start with making changes like this one.
Kathy
October 30, 2008, 5:55pm (report abuse)My son is in a Federal Prison where some of the employees and guards feel it is "Their" duty to punish the prisoner. Saying no to little things they need. Putting them through alot of red tape for something that should be a given. Making life harder for them than they already have it. Many of the personnel who work in these prisons are people who wanted to be police officers but didn't make it or couldn't. It is NOT their job to punish anyone just because they CAN. This is something that needs to be looked at very closely.
Please pass H.R. 7089. Give these people a chance to reform instead of causing them anger because they are treated less than human beings should be. If you treat a man like a DOG he will act like one.If you treat him like a human being, He may just become a better one. Think about it.
Chantal
October 30, 2008, 6:48pm (report abuse)Most of these people committed these acts due to necessity but they haven't killed or attacked anyone. The government should not use tax dollars for this. There are also many immigration cases where people are in jail for 5 years just for being in the country illegally. This is nonsense. Please, have some more sense and do something about it. Those who are there have learned their lesson and if they stay they will become bitter and angry and later on maybe a menace to society. Let them go!!

October 30, 2008, 11:02pm (report abuse)Good behavior exhibited over a long period of time is enough evidence for me of an inmate's rehab. This bill should be passed, it's a no-brainer!

October 31, 2008, 4:51pm (report abuse)This bill MUST be passed. It's unconstitutional to keep people in prison with no chance for parole.

November 1, 2008, 2:26pm (report abuse)Today in our ecnomic times, it seems ludicris to have a prison for the non-violent prisioners. It is my understanding that it cost $45,000 per year per prisioner to keep them in Prison. Why not release them and let them make an earning and put money back into the system. Look at the help it would bring back to their families. Please support this bill, and the sooner the better.
Paula
November 1, 2008, 3:51pm (report abuse)My husband is currently serving a 5 year sentence for a non-violent crime someone else commited. He is a professional and is sitting in prison due to manditory sentences. He could be better serving society by working and paying back 50 or even 75% of his income to restitution, and be home with his kids and myself. Instead those he owes restitution to will never see their money. This bill needs to pass!!B
Barbara
November 3, 2008, 2:10am (report abuse)Good time should also be given for those who teach and those who take classes. Some of the prisons are so crowded there aren't enough jobs to go around. But a prisoner can make his life better by improving his mind with education also. And if he has already been to college he can share what he knows with others. Teaching should be considered a job as that a lot of time is spent in the preparation of the class.
MARTHA
November 3, 2008, 1:48pm (report abuse)Congress should pass this bill. There are a lot of good people in jail that will benefit from it.

November 3, 2008, 11:58pm (report abuse)I really hope that this bill will have an effect on my husband's case. This is his first time ever being in a Federal prison. I hope that he will have an opportunity to prove to society that he has changed. Please help him if you can. And yes Congress should give them another chance and pass the Bill. God Bless

November 4, 2008, 10:04pm (report abuse)they talk about changing and doing better with their lives...how can they do this very thing that is imposed when they are serving long prison sentences....yes they did wrong but any deserve a second chance...GIVE IT TO THEM TO CHANGE LIKE YOU WANT THEM TO...PLEASE!!!!!

November 5, 2008, 10:08am (report abuse)People deserve second chances. I think this bill should be passed. There are so many men and women just sitting and waiting to get the opportunity to be fathers, mothers, sisters, brother, son and daughters to their family members. Majority of the prisoners made an inmature mistake from the time they were teenagers or young adults and not realize the responsibility they have left behind or the consequences of their choices they have made. But now I know they have realized what they have done and have learned their lessons ten times over, especially the ones who have been in there for over 10 years now. Please pass this bill it's time for a Change. "Yes We Can" We are in a new era in life let our family members experience what is going to happen.
Berna LaMonda
November 7, 2008, 2:30pm (report abuse)At this moment a sixty-one year old PHD, first offense, non violent offender. Dr. Jess LaMonda, serving 13 years for 13 counts of mail fraud, associated with his brothers investment company. This Doctorate level offender sits, and I mean sits, in an Arkansas Federal Prison, while his wife, now drawing (prematurely) Social Security, struggles to survive.I am lucky, many inmates have famillies living on Welfare, add that to the $30,000 to house the inmate, and the societal drain climbs higher. Get them out of prison, and put those minds and bodies to work. Many of these incarerated executives were educated with government grants, put them to work for society, make tax dollars work for us.
Gari N.
November 7, 2008, 4:06pm (report abuse)This is an important bill that should be passed. America incarcerates more people, than any other industrialized country in the world. There is something inherently wrong with this picture. Also, a disproportionate number of Black males are affected by the current law. Non-violent offenders should be given a second chance.
T.M.
November 8, 2008, 1:47am (report abuse)My husband is 74, and in poor health, he has been convicted innocently of a non-violent white collar crime, along with his near 80 year old co-defendant, which is suffering from prostate cancer, they have already served over 5 hard long years. It has been heartbreaking, but we do not give up on hope. Please pass this bill soon. God Bless All who have been innocently convicted and their families.

November 8, 2008, 9:33am (report abuse)It would take off 6.5 years off my cousins time, allowing him to be there for the earley teenage years for his two daughters. If this bill doesn't get passed in the next six months it might never. Everyone must email and write there local congress man or wowen and let them know that this bill is very important to us.

November 8, 2008, 11:49am (report abuse)A great bill that will give convicts a second chance and save taxpayers millions of dollars.
It would also relive some of the overcrowding problems we currently have.

November 10, 2008, 1:37am (report abuse)I truly believe that the system is harsh on so many levels. My husband is currently fighting for his life in the federal system. November 10, 2008, 8:34pm (report abuse)Items not addressed in this session are dead already. They are breaking for holiday recess. All bills not closed will need to be reintroduced and begin from scratch. Better luck next time!!

November 10, 2008, 8:37pm (report abuse)the only people who want this bill to pass are criminals and their families. No law abiding citizen could care less about whether theives and drug dealers get out early. And since criminals cannot vote, the voter base does not support this bill, hence it probably will not pass.

November 11, 2008, 12:36am (report abuse)This bill needs to be passed and federal law really needs to be evaluated and changed. A person convicted of a non violent crime can and has done more time than a person convicted of murder in a state case. The federal law when speaking of "good time" should be the same or comparable to state laws. The time is substaintially higher because of what political power Federal district courts gain with every conviction. The time is so lop-sided with crimes to begin with and with no hope of credited good time, gives little hope and confidence in the system. With all the time that is given with Federal convictions there are very few reform and/or educational programs. If the time is for reform and for citizens, I think it will do everyone justice to give convicts a real chance at degrees and higher education to enter society in a respectable way. A prisoner being let out of jail after 20 years with basic training and no higher education is unfair and a set up to fail. Increase "good time."

November 12, 2008, 5:41pm (report abuse)I think that this is a good bill. People all make mistake. We are not prefect we learn from our mistake. But that does not mean trow away the key. H.R. 7089 is a good bill we should have other bills like it. To help them we are the greatest country in the world. We go all over and help people in this world and i not say that we should stop but i saying maybe we should help our people to.

November 16, 2008, 9:27am (report abuse)i have a non violent, non-criminal girlfriend who's serving two years in the fed because of word of mouth. the sentencing and process of convicting is totally inhumane. i support the the bill and i'm sure that anyone who knows how america capitalizes gain from dienfranchising and incarcerating people, would support this bill too. i don't expect all of you to understand, you haven't walked in my shoes or seen the struggles of the inner cities. if you own stock in privatized prisons, you will disagree, but time has come for good time and sentencing reform. CHANGE IN 08!!!

November 17, 2008, 3:29pm (report abuse)NOW IS THE TIME FOR CHANGE. THIS WOULD BE THE BEST THING IF THIS BILL WAS PASSED. SO MANY PEOPLE ARE IN PRISON FOR YEARS AND YEARS FOR NON VIOLENT CRIMES. WE NEED TO LEAD BY EXAMPLE OUT HERE AND SHOW THEM WE CARE ABOUT THEM CHANGING THEIR LIVES. I EXPERIENCE THIS FIRST HAND, MY FIANCEE IS IN THE SYSTEM AND IT'S THE HARDEST THING I HAVE EVER HAD TO DO. PLEASE ALL THAT READ THIS OR COMMENT ON HERE. JUST KEEP ALL THESE PEOPLE IN YOUR PRAYERS AND HOPE SOMETHING GOOD COMES FROM THIS BILL.WE NEED OUT LOVED ONES BACK IN THE WORKFORCE. THEY HAVE FAMILIES HERE TO SUPPORT THEM.

November 18, 2008, 1:50pm (report abuse)This legislation is paramount to those who, especially, are 1st time offenders, have shown great remorse, demonstrated cooperation with the BOP, have supportive families, have the willingness and will have the opportunity to work and pay restitution. This is especially a great incentive to those entering the system that have children at home that prior to commitment were a critical part of their up-bringing.
