September 29, 2008, 9:15pm (report abuse)Give these people hope that if they change, they will get another chance to show responsible living on the outside.

September 30, 2008, 11:31am (report abuse)It's not just the inmates that are affected. They have husbands, wives, and children. please help put there families back together.

September 30, 2008, 12:55pm (report abuse)this is a great thing for many people. there are many currently in and waiting to go into the system that the federal system has used too much resources on. this lets them get back to there lives and family and move on to be a productive member of society.
Kimberly
September 30, 2008, 2:44pm (report abuse)This is an excellent thing for many people. From the tax payers that complain taxes are too high(look at how much we spend on inmates) to yes, thank you "Scott" these people have wives and children and we are all waiting for this to be passed.

September 30, 2008, 5:55pm (report abuse)Everyone deserves the chance to make their lives go down the right path. It would make some family bonds stronger and with lots of positive outcomes. Lets give these inmates a chance. And give back the spouses, moms and dads to the families who love and miss them very much! Lets spend our taxes on more important issues. Have a heart! It's not a unreasonable request. Thanks!
Cindy
September 30, 2008, 10:46pm (report abuse)With all of the serious economic problems in the country the fact that we are spending massive amounts of money to incarcerate people at the Federal level for extremely long sentences makes no sense. I personally know someone who made a mistake, non violent, first time offense and was sentenced to an extreme 6.5 years. So, for 6.5 years the taxpayers will pay to "correct" this persons behavior. I realize that people need to be punished for their crimes but there are so many men/women who are spending years and years and years of their lives for one mistake. Give them and their loved ones a second chance and give the taxpayers a break!!

September 30, 2008, 10:52pm (report abuse)These prisoners have proven that they are willing to work and become part of a law obiding society, they deserve a second chance.

September 30, 2008, 11:17pm (report abuse)I agree that this is a GREAT bill that should be put back in place. I don't know the different sentencing guidelines between state and federal but federal in my eyes are way too harsh especially for non violent offenders. I believe this bill will help us financially as a whole in the United States. Not to mention we are the land of the free and agreeing with some of the comments here people do deserve a second chance
STACY
October 1, 2008, 8:12am (report abuse)I agree with everyone here, that many of these inmates need this good time bill to come into effect. The harsh sentences these inmates receives for one time non-violent offenses is insane really. And with our economy the way it is it would be in the governments best interest to approve this bill. There are currently over 200 thousand inmates in federal prisons. At $40 grand a year to house just ONE inmate, lets do the math.
Cortney
October 1, 2008, 4:23pm (report abuse)I agree with all the posts above. These prisoners have been making so many efforts to change for the better and prepare themselves for re-entry into society...to contribute to it. They've proven they deserve a second chance and they should be granted it!!
Silvia
October 1, 2008, 7:16pm (report abuse)I agree with everyone here. I think these men/women have been given in some cases harsh sentences. These inmates deserve a second chance, my son for instance was sentenced 17 years, he is a 1st offender and these years have been a lifetime for his dad and me. Yes he did wrong, but he has been working and doing all he can to stay out of trouble. I support this bill 110%.
Kathryn
October 1, 2008, 9:59pm (report abuse)Please pass this bill. Warehousing people in prison for extended periods just contributes to more antisocial perosnality disorders and limits an inmates ability to reintegrate into society to demonstrate change.

October 1, 2008, 10:23pm (report abuse)this would save tax dollars this also would help our economy we know it needs help.

October 2, 2008, 12:32am (report abuse)I have a 29 year old son who made a stupid mistake over 10 years ago and got 45 years. His whole family suffers. We can't even afford to go visit. We haven't seen him in 5 years
Jonathan
October 2, 2008, 6:11pm (report abuse)I have seen this system myself and know that it is unfair and injust, I made one mistake and I'm still paying for it even out of prison. When will my debt to society be repaid and my allowance back into society be fufullied? There are generally good people within those walls who really want to show they are changed but their 110 year sentence prevents it. Pass this bill so that these men and women can come home.
Karen
October 3, 2008, 8:45am (report abuse)Non-violent offenders should have a second chance. Not just non-violent drug offenders-all non violent offenders. The differance in Fed time versus state is rediculouse.
Scott
October 3, 2008, 1:52pm (report abuse)My son made a stupid mistake at age 23 and was sentenced to 20 years. He's a different, mature person now who deserves a second chance. Let's all pray.

October 3, 2008, 6:34pm (report abuse)It is pure stupidity to warehouse the men and women who are non-violent first-time offenders for many, many years. Many of these people are convicted on Conspiracy to Manufacture Methamphetamine, which carries at TEN YEAR TO LIFE SENTENCE! I have a friend who is serving 12.5 years for this charge and was never caught with a speck of the drug, he was convicted because "people said" he "conspired" to make the drug. He is living the best years of his life sitting in a prison - not working at taking care of his family as he is perfectly capable of doing. I have another friend who served the same sentence for the same charge. His wife did not divorce him, but she and his children suffered terribly while he just sat in a prison. Had either of these men been convicted at a state level for possession of methamphetamine, they may not have served a year. It is insane and we need a REAL CHANGE here!

October 3, 2008, 11:24pm (report abuse)Please support this bill. Many first time offenders were given extreme sentences. Many are unjustly charged, convicted and sentenced. Many families are suffering. Offenders are wasting away while taxpayers are supporting their families. Please send these people back home so that can start providing for their families. Taxpayers are suppose to save tons of money if H.R. 7089 is passed.
Shellie
October 4, 2008, 9:33am (report abuse)Take it from a wife of a current prisoner, he needs to be at home with his family. He just wants to be home with his baby. He committed a non violent crime and will probably pay for it for the rest of his life by people on the outside. Please pass this bill! This is a first time offense and my husband tried to make retribution before he left and got his life in order and found out the reason why he did. All he wants to do is support his family and watch his family grow. Now I sit here with barely anything because we have young children barely making it. So, not only is federal government having to support him, they also have to support us. That is ridiculous. A Waste. They should let out the non violent offenders, watch them closely, make them participate in many programs(aa, community svc, counseling etc)Make them better citizens than the ones that are free. Listen to our prayer!
Patti
October 4, 2008, 10:48am (report abuse)Take it from a former prisoner, everyone deserves a second chance, I now have a brother in prison as a non-violent offender who also has medical needs and not getting the care he needs (liver transplant). Please listen to the prayers and give these non-violent offenders a second chance. They have a R-DAP drug program in many federal prisons put that same program to use on the outside. You'll find that program to work for those offenders before they have to go to prison. Save the taxpayers money, and help put offenders back on track and with thier families.
Mrs. Smith
October 4, 2008, 11:11am (report abuse)I pray to God that this bill is passed, so that MANY women and men can get home to their families that are struggling to keep their familes together in hopes that something will happen that would send their love ones home. This BILL is hope that change can come. We have good people in Prison for a mistake that was made, and severe sentences was imposed. Please help to bring change and pass this BILL.
Vernissie
October 4, 2008, 11:16am (report abuse)We need to bring change to the world. There should always be a second chance to prove to the world that a person can change and be a better productive citizen. There is so much tax payers money being spent to house prisoner, but not enough being spent to make the world a better place. This bill can give a second chance to alot of women and men that deserve to see their children grow up. Change can be made with the passing of this BILL.
Mrs. Adams
October 4, 2008, 11:01pm (report abuse)I strongly agree with the other comments that are posted on this site; This Bill should pass because everyone deserves to have a second chance. Being a wife of a federal prisoner, I know first hand of the stess that it puts on a family; My husband isn't the only one that is serving this time, his family is serving it right along with him. This Bill needs to pass so that my husband along with other inmates can be reunited with their families!!
Kelly
October 5, 2008, 10:45am (report abuse)I believe that everyone deserves a second chance. If you see the people who are affected it would break your heart. These people have families that love them and most just made a stupid mistake give them another chance.I hope this bill passes so my husband can be back were he belongs.Mrs. Adams says it right it is not only the prisoners but the children and the families.
Sue
October 5, 2008, 12:27pm (report abuse)It's time for a change! Stop the warehousing of human lives & address the core issues,ie addiction & the spiritual problems. Reduce theese overly harsh sentences.
RMB
October 5, 2008, 1:28pm (report abuse)I agree that everyone should be given another chance. don't let one mistake be a life sentence for some people who still deserve a second chance.we could do something positive with that money
Lisa
October 5, 2008, 6:38pm (report abuse)Alls i have to say is if the goverment really wanted to stop the madness on the streets, they would start now by releasing some of these men and woman who are serving severe sentances for non violent offences and meanwhile..the children of these men and woman are at the beginning stages of being your future prisoners because the people who can actually teach and redirect theses children because of their actual experiences..are locked up!! In my opinion..its all a conspriacy in itself providing the government and the polititions job security by keeping the "real" teachers" who are the one that can make a differance..locked up. If conspiracy is against the law..the whole government should be locked up..so call it a wash and LETS GET HUMAN HERE!
KathyAnn
October 5, 2008, 9:38pm (report abuse)I believe it is of great importance to allow these people a second chance at being decent, productive human beings.I believe a few years in prison for any offense except murder is enough to make a person change their lives around if they are going to. The longer a person is kept locked up in the conditions they are in, breeds hatred, resentment,a loss of hope and an uncaring attitude. Give them a chance to change their lives. Families are also punished. Some die before seeing a loved one again.PLEASE, pass the bill,H.R. 7089 .
Johnnie Griffin
October 6, 2008, 7:23pm (report abuse)My son is in prison for 36 months for a non-violent crime. He has improved the lives of the men he has been with through studies and work help. He doen not need to be there at all. I think this is a good thing to say yes to.
MARIELLA
October 6, 2008, 7:27pm (report abuse)I AM REALLY GLAD THAT THIS BILL IS BEING DISCUSSED.WE HAVE INMATES WHO HAVE LEARNED THEIR LESSON ANDWOULD LIKE TO HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE TO MAKE IT RIGHT..THEY SHOW IT WITH THEIR BEHAVIOR IN THE FACILITY.. I'M FOR IT 100%.
ADELE
October 6, 2008, 8:08pm (report abuse)I BELIVE THE FEDERAL PRISON SYSTEM HAS TO CHANGE NOW. THESE INMATES DESERVE A SECOND CHANCE AND NOT THE HARSH AND LENGTHY SENTENCES THAT THEY ARE RECEIVING. THIS BILL NEEDS TO BE PASSED SO THESE INMATES, LIKE MY HUSBAND CAN GET A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE THAT THEY DESERVE.
Sherry
October 6, 2008, 8:25pm (report abuse)too bad prison isn't about reform anymore. it is all about punishment. the unfortunate truth is that too often prisons are a place to learn how to be a better criminal, or learn new crimes. the sooner a prisoner gets out of prison, after they proved they can be good, the better for us all. then spend part of the money it would take to keep them incarcerated and spend on retraining them for good jobs. that is why most of them are there, no way for them to make enough honest money.
Jenni
October 6, 2008, 9:05pm (report abuse)This bill would be wonderful if it passes. There are so many people in there serving such harsh sentances for non-violent crimes and everyone deserves a chance to change and show they they've become a better person!
Elle
October 7, 2008, 1:29am (report abuse)Sentencing guidelines are too severe. Please pass this bill and give non violent offenders another opportunity at making this world a better place. Let them go home to their families and allow them to contribute to our society in a productive way. Yes, they made mistakes and should be punished, no disputing that. But enough is enough.
Karen
October 7, 2008, 7:06am (report abuse)This bill needs to pass, for drugs and non-violent crimes. Understand people are being convicted with no evidence. If a person in the system gets a home newspaper they just call the prosecutor and if they were out at the time they testify that they bought drugs. This gets them a reduction in their own time. This is just one example of our unjust system.
Johnny
October 7, 2008, 11:26am (report abuse)From someone working on the inside, this bill could and would change a lot of lives for the better. I believe that the benefit out weighs the risk. Kids are our future and without the family unit intact we are placing our futures at risk. To much time is being given out to freely.
MC
October 7, 2008, 12:06pm (report abuse)I agree with everyones comments. The federal penal system is unfair and unjust. It imposes harsh and unreasonable sentences to first time non-violent offenders. I have seen state sentencing giving probation to people that are guilty of murder-a violent crime. The federal system needs to be reformed. These non-violent offenders deserve a second chance. Most of these offenders have already paid enough by loosing their careers and at times their families. The families are also doing the time. Please pass this bill as it would only be of benefit to all inmates, families of inmates, the government and taxpayers.
lc
October 7, 2008, 10:00pm (report abuse)yes i agree with the bill. the person who commits the crime is not the same person as time goes in. our families are suffering. because of the cost to hold these inmates and the toll on the families the fed parole needs to be reinstated.PLEASE HELP OUR FAMILIES, OUR ECONOMY AND EVWIREERYONE DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE. I THINK MOST OF THE FED INMATES HAD NO IDEA HOW LIFE WOULD BE BEHIND THOSE BARS AND RAZOR
H. Moore
October 8, 2008, 3:41pm (report abuse)Yes, please pass this law so that federal prisoners can see their loved ones again.
Mrs. Morton
October 8, 2008, 3:44pm (report abuse)This bill needs to be pass, so that these inmates can have a second chance at life. They are given too much many for simple crimes, they have paid their debits to society.
Lois Suttles
October 9, 2008, 8:04pm (report abuse)Even God give second chances. Please in the name of God ,give those people a second chance.
Ronnie
October 9, 2008, 8:16pm (report abuse)I believe that this bill should pass and I hope that it does.I think non-violent ofenders should do some kind of community service in programs that help them and the community or like years ago give them a choice to go into the military service.there is no rehabilitation in prison. All you learn more about criminal activity.I think everybody deserves a second chance.Even God gives all of us second chances. This bill should pass!!!!

October 9, 2008, 9:06pm (report abuse)My grandaughter is serving an 18 month sentence. Her husband got her in trouble with drugs, yet he has not seen a day in Prison. Since then, she has had a baby by her fiance and needs to be home with her child. She was and is a good person who married a louse that got her on drugs, so she could provide the drugs for him.
She deserves a second chance. She has been off of drugs for over 2 years and she will never go back to living that kind of life.
Thamanna
October 9, 2008, 10:44pm (report abuse)Please Pass this bill! We need to give them a second chance ASAP.
Helen
October 10, 2008, 12:13pm (report abuse)I truely agree with this bill. We need to really take some time and look at our crimaal system from every angle. I mean are we help your nation or hurting ourselves when we spend billions of dollars on prisoners and have students fighting to get funds for collge. It seems like we are out of touch as to what really makes a good country. These people deserve a second chance if they are proving that they are willing to make some serious changes in their life. We all have been given seconds chances in one way or another and that is what we shoudl take into thought when we look at this bill. I AM IN FULL SURPORT OF THIS BILL!!!
Dottie
October 10, 2008, 7:35pm (report abuse)My brother, after working at one job for over 30 years, raising 3 children by himself, owning a house and paying taxes for almost 40 years, serving in Viet Nam and leaving the Army with an honorable discharge, the purple heart and other medals, makes one terrible error in judgement, which he needed to be punished for but.... 10 years due to mandatory sentencing? A woman in Montgomery County, Md., same county that he lived in, did the same thing in the 90's and got 18months... but she had a lot of money and was also in politics. How is that fair? If nothing else.... listen to all that happened in these cases. Then make decisions. Think of all that they have contributed and their ages and then make a decision. It could save us all a lot of money and at least save some of the suffering it causes the families and making some good people bad due to the environment and craziness of the BOP system. I know they try to do the best that they can with the limited money and lack of help.
Missi
October 11, 2008, 12:58am (report abuse)This would improve our Federal system because it rewards inmates for working hard and staying out of trouble. If we can rehabilitate someone, make them EARN their early release, they'll prove to be a beneficial member of society again. It just makes so much sense!
Restore families,
save taxpayers money,
reduce overcrowding,
encourage rehabilitation,
return workers to the community,
restore HOPE for so many!
luban
October 11, 2008, 6:54am (report abuse)Good time gives inmates an incentive to be on their best behaviour, that's why it needs to pass, parole would give further incentive. Together they not only save taxpayers dollar but also provide safer environment for inmates and prison guards alike. Most inmates are imprisoned for non-violent crimes but prison can make them violent if they don't see the light at the end of the tunnel. Pass H.R.7089, introduce parole... These are only the first steps towards a just justice system. Federal conspiracy laws are a travesty of a joke of justice; no profession has such high percentage of success as the feds have with their convictions. Why? No evidence needed for conspiracy conviction, just a word from somebody trying to ease their own time... Relevant (but unrelated and unproven) conduct in sentencing? That's unconstitutional yet practised by every federal judge. Land of the free my a**...

October 11, 2008, 8:06am (report abuse)THIS IS A GREAT BILL AND WILL HELP
NOT ONLY THE PRISIONERS, BUT THERE
LOVED ONES TWO.PLEASE HELP US CONGRESS TO GET THIS PASTED.

October 11, 2008, 8:53am (report abuse)I think this is a good bill. I think those who work hard and do their best should be given a second chance. I think you should look over their entire life along with their life in prison and make a fair judgement.
Kathryn
October 11, 2008, 10:06pm (report abuse)Families of these inmates suffer enough financially and emotionally. Lets give these 1st time non-violent inmates a second chance to contribute to sociey and restore broken relationships with spouses and their children. We all deserve a second chance.
Marietta
October 11, 2008, 10:50pm (report abuse)I believe this is a good bill and for those that deserve this, it would be in everyone's interest to have this bill passed. Most inmates learn the first time around and should be given credit for what they have done on the inside to change their lives for the better. Isn't that what our prison system is supposed to be about? Not just leaving them there to rot while alot of money is spent to take care of them. Rehabilitation only works if they are given the chance. PLEASE PASS THIS BILL.
Teresa Yancey, Fulton, MO
October 11, 2008, 10:55pm (report abuse)I ask that you please consider this bill. Many are truly working to change and it is very discerning that we are wasting so many tax dollars keeping people in that do not deserve to have to serve 85% of their time. We need second chances and we are in such financial trouble in this country that keeping federal offenders in for so much longer than state offenders for lesser crimes sometimes is a unnecessary financial burden to our country and the inamates. Being away from family and friends and being so far from them that they can rarely visit is not helping to reform. They need to be able to come back home and start life again after they have made mistakes. This would increase the tax dollars and bring home sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, and friends sooner and the idea of incarcerating someone is with the hope of reform. Reform is great but is less likely to occur if there is so little to work towards or worse no where to return to. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
Sherri Yeley
October 11, 2008, 11:28pm (report abuse)Please Pass This Bill! Bring Home Our Loved Ones!It Is A Win-Win!For All! Give Them A Second Chance! Save Taxdollars & Save Families!
William
October 12, 2008, 1:18pm (report abuse)I work for the BOP as a detail supervisor and I think this bill would be great for all involved. Staff, taxpayers and inmates. It's hard enough getting inmates to work for 12 cents an hour, this would give staff and effective tool in getting inmates to work with cost savings for the taxpayer, a more motivated inmate work force and safer prisons.
Debbie
October 12, 2008, 7:11pm (report abuse)I'm with the 97 percentile; most people deserve a 2nd chance. Besides from that, it is tearing families apart. The system, even though best in the world, has so many flaws and when a murderer can get less time than much less offensive crimes, it needs fixing. With the economy in its current state, the savings to the American people would be in the BILLIONS. More common sense approach needs to be taken. Right now, it's this new bill. Please pass it!
Rayneeda
October 12, 2008, 8:54pm (report abuse)I honestly cant believe that we have so many people incarserated in the Federal system on NON- VIOLENT cases without the chance of parole. This is sad! And our economy is in a bad standing and were spending money holding people that need be be given another chance! Then we are letting violent offenders and sex offenders have chance after chance. What's wrong with this picture?
Snook Texas
October 13, 2008, 10:02am (report abuse)I think this is a great bill.
Sentencing guidelines are too severe. Please pass this bill and give non violent offenders another opportunity.
There are so many families suffering because of the Mandatory minimum sentences. I pray that this bill will be passed and allow families to be reconnected!

October 13, 2008, 11:12pm (report abuse)Please help......I have a 5month daughter who won't be able to see her daddy until she is 15years old please push for this bill.....
Jennie
October 14, 2008, 6:43am (report abuse)This incentive gives the inmates reason to work hard and turn it around earning an incarceration reduction. Less money for tax payers to put out, more tax money coming in once released. Less hardship on the families trying to make it on less income. The sentencing has become outragously long,,,something is needed to offset some of this insanity that occured when they changed things back in 84.

October 14, 2008, 1:00pm (report abuse)I am a disables woman of 62 years I am a widow my oldest son has been dead for 3.5 years the only son I have left has a sentence of 21 years and has served 10 he has now turned around completely he is taking a college correspondence course and has a 4.0 grade point average which is not paid for by the government anymore I believe with my whole heart and soul he deserves a second chance Please pass Bill # H.R.7089
Josh Taylor
October 14, 2008, 2:25pm (report abuse)I oppose this bill because if it passes there will be hell on Earth. Federal and local police will not be able to protect us all. Lawlessness will arise and unarrestable crimes will skyrocket. I think the offenders and convicts got what they deserved. You did the crime, you do the time. I pray that this bill should not pass. Civil offenders don't deserve a second chance.
Kenn
October 14, 2008, 5:27pm (report abuse)My understanding is the change of 85% to 65% of their sentence. Would this be applied to all offenders or just first timers?
Sue
October 14, 2008, 5:44pm (report abuse)Please pass this bill my brother has been in there for almost 7 yrs. He is really a very compassionate person just made a bad choice trying to get money quick. I am 65 I would like to see him out before i die. He has many places to live if he can only get out. Thank you so much.

October 14, 2008, 10:19pm (report abuse)We need this bill to pass. The state of the economy these people should help build up the economy. The money used to house an inmate can be used to assist in the housing and banking situation. Health care and education could us the millions we are using to house these inmate. Help them to help us.

October 15, 2008, 8:25pm (report abuse)This law needs to be passed, but it seems like the people we voted into office have their own minds and oppinions. It is not fair for non-violent people to be incarcerated in federal prisons as long as they are, and if they are willing to work their way out that is a added bonus.
mary
October 15, 2008, 10:54pm (report abuse)please pass this bill and bring these non-violent inmates home.my sisters are elderly and they still don't understand how they got there.help the economy and give us a tax break. please everyone, get the book titled we're all doing time and it will explain what the families are going through. I wish all the law makers would read it and if they have a heart at all they would work harder on this bill. thanks to all the supporters.

October 16, 2008, 12:55am (report abuse)I would like to see this bill go thru, the only hold up that we may all find is that the system which was set up for rehabilitation has lost site of that word years ago. The men and women who are in the walls and forgotten by most in society spend time learning things, helping others, and finding a way of survival that most of us couldn't and for those who are taking the initiative to better themselves I think we should commend them and give them a chance. If you keep people out of society for 5 or more years even how do you think they will act coming out? These people deserve to prove they have bettered themselves. I hope everyone who gets the chance does well with it so the govt can see the mistakes they have made by ridding this before. We gave Bush another chance*wink*. I studied crim justice yet gave a new look by discussing the inmate side, I know some, and even ex FBI were amazed with my knowledge n truth. I say give them a chance. Good luck to all.

October 17, 2008, 10:45pm (report abuse)I believe the bill will give those inmates that are truely committed to rehabilitate themselves and be part of society a second chance. I feel that we should spend our tax payor dolloars on helping society and those who are willing to improve and enhance their lives.

October 18, 2008, 3:06pm (report abuse)Unless you are willing to keep these people in prison for life, there needs to be a plan to rehabilate. Most people in prison are not harden crimenals. If can release them after 30 tears in prison and expect them to be functional in society. But there are always exceptions

October 18, 2008, 8:04pm (report abuse)I am asking please look at this bill very serious. We have to restore families. Until you walk in our shoes, you can't begin to comphrend the difficulty and burdens this puts of families and children. It is like a serious illness. You can't get well and you can't die. You just linger for years trying to hold things together and keep a family bond together. You try to keep the children strong and make sure they don't grow up with problems with out Dad in their lives. They need to be home working and paying taxes. Not putting a burden on the taxes payors. Libby got a second chance. Everyone deserves a second chance.
The ones that work hard and want to make a difference in their lives and family, to the society. Please give them a second chance. Life is to short. There is enough saddness in life. We are America. I Pray everynight that my family will be reunited. Put yourself in our shoes. Would you not want the same thing. A second chance.

October 18, 2008, 11:59pm (report abuse)I truly believe this bill would be a good idea for inmates who are given such a harsh sentence. If this bill is passed and federal inmates only have to served 65% instead of 85%, what rehab will be availabe for them when they get out. I want to see rehabilatation centers for these guys when they get out. May God bless all of you and your son or daughter that is incarcerated.
