This is a most important bill to repay the suffering of the many, many, many, servicemen and service women. Please pass this bill.
It is just logical to understand that gastrointestinal cancers would be a direct result of the dioxins being sprayed, ingested, breathed, in the Vietnam era. At times, clothing would be soaked with the spraying. It was absorbed though the entire body! Please ask your legislators to support this bill.

I was a widow of a Vietnam Vet who died of colon Ca. two years after he was discharged from the US Air Force. We were told that his death could not be service connected because the diagnoses was made a little over a year from discharge.

My father, Armando Linares Jr, a former U.S. Marine, served in the Vietnam War and passed a few months ago from gastric cancer. After he passed, his claim was dismissed.

We need your support on making sure this bill is passed. My husband was diagnosed with EC in 2004. He served in the area of Viet Nam where they sprayed daily to kill the foliage for building a road. (of course was told it was safe) He has NEVER smoked or drank heavily. His personal doctor even submitted a letter stating it was just as likely as not to have been caused by Agent Orange. Claim denied. My husband has now been told his cancer is no longer curable, treating symptoms as they come along. Three reoccurences since his diagnosis. My husband and other viet Nam veterans need your help in passing this bill. Its time we stand behind our veterans and do what we can to make their lives easier.

I urge every political elected representative to embrace this Bill and enact on it immediately, pass it in respect and honor of every Vietnam Veteran who proudly wore the uniform and colors of the United States of America. It is up to our elected officials to send a message through out Washington and to the citizens of the US that we care, respect and honor our Vietnam Veterans with dignity and are committed to care for our veterans, their families and loved ones. It should not have to take 40 plus years to provide health care, services and benefits for those whom have died, sufered and continue to die and suffer from exposure to Agent Orange. My father served in Vietnam and died of cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the bile ducts) in 2001. I believe his type of cancer was related to Agent Orange.

These types of cancer need to be included. These men faught in Vietnam and then get no assistance when they need it!

My husband, a Marine served in Vietnam as a radio operator. In 2005 he was diagnosed with cancer at the junction of his esophagus and stomach. He passed away on March 20, 2007. The same month that he died, his claim for cancer was denied. I believe, without a doubt, that his exposure to chemicals during his service in Vietnam contributed to his cancer. I urge everyone to write your elected officials to support this bill for the families that continue to suffer from actions taken 30 plus years ago.

38 USC Section 1116 should be ammended to include all forms of cancer. Reason: Case Law: Tozzi v US Department of Health & Human Services, et. al 180 F. Supp2d 1 (DDC 2000) & 350 US AppDC 40(2001). The HHS/National Toxicology Program NTP/ and the Environmental Toxicology Program ETP/ HHS 9th Report on Carcinogens in 2000 upgraded TCDD-Dioxin as a known Human Carcinogen...responsible for all forms of cancer. The U.S. is no longer in conflict with the U.S. World Health Organization WHO who declared also that the chemical TCDD-Dioxin is a human carcinogen. Only the Veteran Administration and the Institute of Medicine is in conflict with the U.S. Government and the U.N. on this issue. Its amazing that the VA which is part of the US Government is in conflict with the US Government. The US Government Agency that represented the numerous US Govt Agency Heads in the Tozzi case was the US Attorney General. VA Regulation should be amended to include all forms of cancer.

My father, the kindest man I will ever know, died from esophageal cancer. He was a proud United States Marine and proud of his service in Vietnam. The VA denied him compensation for his cancer. He received this denial two days before he succumbed to this horrific cancer. No one will ever convince me that Agent Orange did not kill my dad. I don't know why anyone would vote against this bill but obviously they have no family or friends that were ever exposed to Agent Orange so they are uneducated as to the effects it has on the human body. And for those of you who have lost your dads you know how hard it is for a young teen to go through that. It has been years and it still hurts. Those that vote against it obviously have no clue what its like to go through not only what he was put through but also what me and my family were put through.

Our Vietnam Veterans served & defended our country, now it's time for our elected officials to defend the rights of those brave men.My husband volunteered two terms in Vietnam and was also called back to service a few years later. He firmy believed his esophageal carcinoma was from his exposure in service as he had no risk factors for the disease. He lost his battle with EC after 5 horrible months and had no financial assistance at all. It is imperative this ball is passed to help other veterans who are still fighting their cancer battles. A fantastic man and father was lost due to the honor he had for his country. I pray this bill is passed

I have one concern about all of this - If the congress gets involved in specifying exactly what conditions are related to exposure how long will it be before they have to specify every one. As it is now, even thought it is slow, the VA does not have to have congressional approval to add something to the list. Is it possible that if this legislation is passed giving specific directions to the VA that they will simply wait for the same thing to happen in the future, rather than adding something when the IOM research shows it to be appropriate?

I'm not sure I really trust the congress to be looking out for me and mine.

Dioxin has been proven to cause all-site cancer. The IOM is dragging their feet and the VA doesn't care. Someone needs to step up. Vietnam veterans are dying of cancers at an alarming rate. Their families are devastated emotionally and financially. This war ended 4 decades ago...you tell me why it's necessary for studies to continue on and on. What about Admiral Zumwalts report? It was ignored because it showed dioxin as it is...an all-site carcinogenic.

Please pass H.R. 6798. I lost my husband to esophageal cancer this year, February 16, 2008, at the age of 59. His death was caused by his exposure to all of the herbicides sprayed in Vietnam. He proudly served in the USMC from 1965 through 1969, and was stationed in Vietnam (1967-1969) for over 20 months, even though he was his parents’ only surviving son. Being stationed on the DMZ he was constantly sprayed and drenched with these chemicals, even when drinking, eating, etc. This man supported our country to the end and never doubted he did the right thing by supporting our country then or to his death. He was denied benefits; however, his concern was for other soldiers that have faced, are facing, or will face the terrible fate of suffering from these herbicides. He was also concerned with his family and these soldiers’ families. Please pass this bill and thank these soldiers for all they have given: their health and their life.

NNelson

September 23, 2008, 11:52am (report abuse)

Mr. Smith,
No, the IOM has not determinded there is no association between digestive cancers and herbicide exposure. As a matter of fact, their latest report states that there in now inadequate or insufficient evidence to determine an association. Their studies continue.

You are not a vietnam veteran. You are an average tax payer, uneducated in dioxins, and fearful that your taxes will be raised because more cancers are being added to the presumptive list for those vietnam veterans who served YOUR country and are now dying because of it. Shame on you.

Bill Smith

September 28, 2008, 5:51am (report abuse)

NNelson

Inadequate or insufficient evidence means no benefits. That is how it should be. And that is how it should stay. Period.

By the way, why don't you tell us all you know about dioxins, since you believe yourself to be so well educated. And be sure to tell us about the dioxins each and every citizen has been exposed to at home over the past 35 years since the US involvement in the Vietnam war ended.

NNelson

September 29, 2008, 4:48pm (report abuse)

Yes, citizens have been exposed to dioxins but not at the dose rate that Vietnam veterans were. Everyone knows that. My previous statement stands...

It is beyond me as to why you feel these veterans do not deserve the health care and compensation they so rightly deserve. I suspect you feel that no veteran should receive compensation regardless of whether it's presumptive or not. I also suspect that you were one of many who shunned these young men when they returned from Vietnam, never taking into consideration that more than half of them were drafted, did not want to be there, and were just scared kids. You sure your last name isn't Fonda?

Bill Smith

October 2, 2008, 12:33pm (report abuse)

NNelson said "Yes, citizens have been exposed to dioxins but not at the dose rate that Vietnam veterans were. Everyone knows that."

There is NO evidence to show the levels of dioxin exposure in Vietnam. You would have us believe that everyone was exposed to some large dose, when there is absolutely no proof of that.

You can call names and make all the idiotic comments you want but you have zero scienctific facts to back your position.

What I see in you is another whiner who thinks the citizens should provide them with an undeserved handout.

Thanks

NNelson

October 3, 2008, 3:23pm (report abuse)

Bill,
Anyone can search the internet and find all the information they need regarding dioxins. There are many scientific facts stating that dioxins/TCDD are an all-site carcinogenic and the more exposure the more likely the cancer.

What I see in you is someone who has no respect for our veterans and couldn't care less what happens to them just so long as it doesn't cost you anything.

I am through with this conversation but thank you for your opinion.

Bill Smith

October 4, 2008, 9:30pm (report abuse)

Susan J. Hill,

I do not question the fact that dioxins cause cancer. The problem here is that the cancers discussed in this bill have not been shown to be positively linked to exposure to dioxin in Vietnam. Until that happens I do not believe it is appropriate for the Congress to legislate the establishment of a presumptive connection.

NNelson,

Your problem, as I see it, is that you believe far too much of the hyperbole, most likely because it supports your position. I venture to say that if you had no financial stake in this you would have no interest in the legislation. As has been said many times - "Follow the money."

My husband Mike died from esophageal cancer in July 2008. He was diagnosed in May 2006. This horrific disease is widely recognized as related to Agent Orange, but the VA continues to deny claims. Some men have been approved while others have not. My husband served in Vietnam 68-70, the years they sprayed the heaviest with the deadly dioxin Agent Orange Mixture. His esophageal cancer was at the junction of the stomach, like many other vets. Please pass this bill -- it's long overdue to get gastrointestinal cancers on the presumed list of associated cancers related to Agent Orange. It's the right thing to do. If Wall Street can be bailed out, why not our vets who have suffered an intolerable disease? I beg of you to vote for this bill!

I don't think it's NNelsen that's upsetting in his comments..it's Bill Smith who thinks gastric cancers should not go through congress to be put on the presumptive list for AO.

Personally, I think it's high time someone gave the VA a kick in the butt to get them motivated. It's beyond me why gastric cancers weren't added long ago. For gosh sakes, these veterans were covered in it, it settled on their food, their water, their clothing and their skin. How could it have not gotten into their stomachs? My dad died from esophageal cancer and I know it was from Agent Orange. The VA does, too, but adding gastric cancers to the presumptive list will cost money and it's money they do not want to spend. The economy is in a mess now, but so is my mom because the money she did have was used up in treatments and surgeries for my dad. The VA keeps denying her claim even though she has sent them an unbelievable amount of positive evidence including letters from my dads doctors stating that his cancer was more likely than not caused from dioxin. It is painful to be without my dad but he is gone and now it's my mom that's suffering. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR SENATORS AND CONGRESSMEN AND ASK THEM TO SUPPORT THIS BILL.

Mr. Smith,

I have to wonder why this bill is of such great interest to you. I realize it must be difficult to understand where the rest of us are coming from when you do not have a personal experience such as ours. If you would take the time to research dioxins you will understand our concerns that, of all the presumptive diseases that have been added, gastro-intestional cancers should have been on the very top of the list.

We all know the cover-ups involved with the Ranch Hand Study, we know how Zumwalts report was basically swept under the rug, we know of Times Beach, Savaso, Italy, Love Canal and what the Vietnamese are now suffering. I realize this bill will cost the taxpayers and that is unfortunate, but we must pay for the mistakes of the chemical companies that subjected our young veterans to dioxins, the most deadly chemical known to man.
Someday this cancer will be presumptive and then you will understand why.

Best Regards..
Nick

No apology needed. I did check comments on bill H. R. 6562 and yes, I see what you mean. Don't you just wonder why these civilians think they know so much about AO/dioxins? Even the IOM can't say with 100% certainty that it's causal or not of diseases. Now we have these "experts" on this site trying to tell us facts that even the IOM can't come to a conclusion on. And as for it all being "follow the money", damn right it is. I'd like to have even one-half of the money back that it took to fight my cancer. What makes you think you have any such "right"? There is no such right. The only rights you have are the same as any other citizen. No one of has any right to expect the other citizens to support them because of what they may, or may not, have done in Vietnam.

Bill,

We can all see that the stress of reading comments on this site seems to be getting to you. Why don't you just take your little "no" vote and go bother people who care about your opinion.

By the way, did you ever serve your country in any manner? Why do you hate veterans so much anyway? Bet you could't get into the service, right?

I'd say you are just a lonely little man with nothing more to do than surf this particular site. It amazes me as to why. If this bill passes, it will cost you pennies, certainly not enough money to justify all the time you spend posting your negative comments. You are what most refer to as a troublemaker and I can tell you this, most veterans have enough to deal with without you in the picture.

Well well Tom,

I see you just wander from one loser group to another. Seems like you can't find anything you really like. Too bad about your bluewaternavy boys being sold doen the river. But then again, isn't that where you all claim you were? Down the river, that is.

Please support this bill.
Thank you.

P.S. Would the naysayers please find somewhere else to bash people?
Our Vietnam vets have had enough of your disrespect.

Someone please tell me why anyone would lurk around this particular bill just to make snide comments to those of us who are in favor of seeing this bill passed? We have every right to our opinion and this bill does affect us directly. It does not affect the hecklers at all.

I am stunned by some of the negative comments directed at what appears to be mainly widows posting here. Just maybe this bill is our last hope at rebuilding a life that was destroyed most certainly by agent orange. There is no reason why lung, prostate, leukemia and other cancers are now presumptive and gastro cancers are not. It should not take a rocket scientist to realize that high levels of dioxin exposed can and do cause all kinds of cancers not just specific ones.

I sure hope these mean people aren't veterans who end up learning the hard way by getting cancer themselves.

.

October 20, 2008, 4:07pm (report abuse)

Oh the poor widows. Yeah right.

The current science does not support your contention that dioxin caused the cancers as you claim. Unless that happens you can just continue to whine and cry all you want.

As to the right to opinions - that is not an exclusive right for all you sob and whine folks. Others also have the same right.

Yep, you are only allowed to speak here if you agree with those who are seeking compensation from the government. If you don't agree with their position you are supposed to just shut up and go away. Unfortunately for them that isn't going to happen.

The difference is, we are not harassing you.frankly, no one really knows just what cancers dioxins even cause but they do know that they cause them.

You stated your opinions several times. Why do you continue to do so everytime someone new posts a comment regarding wanting this bill to pass?
We are not whining. We watched our husbands die from cancers that we feel were caused from AO. Scientific evidence has nothing to do with our feelings. We feel..period. If this bill passes, so be it. If it doesn't, well, that's just the way the mop flops.
Your negative comments help no one.
They are mean and uncalled for. No one said we were "poor widows" and I have no idea what you were referring to when you stated "yeah, right". We are widows and we did lose our spouses and we did suffer, and they did suffer, but no one, no single one of us is asking for your sympathy so don't say we are whining and sobbing because that is not true.
Please leave us alone

Group,

Ignor the uninformed for they know not what they say. They have no experience with this subject so therefore, can not feel as we do.

Keep your chin up and keep fighting for what you believe in.
