Addendum to my earlier comment about the appendix which lists weapons that are not to be banned: Later in the bill there is a clause stating that they shall not be banned as long as appendix A is in effect. That means they are leaving the door open to drop the appendix at a later date and ban whatever they want to. I think appendix A is just a way to "sugar coat" the thing to get it passed by making people think "gee, that's not so bad, look at all the stuff that isn't banned". Weapons like AK's and AR-15's are banned in another section of the bill which uses the same criteria as the old AWB from 1994. Unless I'm totally reading this thing wrong...

I see most of you are very passionate about this issue and rightfully so. The only problem I see is that even though most of you seem to feel the same amount of disgust about the current political climate, there is still no real organization in your complaint. Many of us are just waiting for the inevitable to happen.

There is another solution!

Currently there is a small grass roots movement starting which has been created "by the people" and "for the people!" The goal is to organize the majority of us in this country who's sentiments are common and consistent.
Sometime in late November (after the election), there will be a website:
www.declarationist.org
This movement hopes to get the support of people like you on various issues that effect our rights and freedoms in this country, one of which is the second amendment.
There is more power in numbers. So if you truly want to make a real difference, look us up!

I am disgusted with the continual infringment on our civil liberties. It would seem this is the "change" we get back for our efforts this past November. We the people need to organize against this kind tyranny now, before we have need to organize another tea party later. Washington had best recognize that government has nothing to fear from honest armed citizens, but it has everything to fear from people under the yoke of tyranny.

I think that they have better things to do then come up with a new laws that would ban semi auto weapons. I cannot see an issue with the people owning Semi auto and high cap magazine. I think that people need to read what are Constitution says look at the last part:

Amendment II
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

The last so called "assault weapons" ban was a solution to a non-existing problem. Check out the stats, FBI UCR, "assault weapons" are almost statistically unimportant. Stop trying to take away our freedoms. Owning firearms is a G*d given right! ANY firearm. You will get the bullets first when you come to take them.

As a retired Green Beret, I have been all over the world, and participated in the nation’s defense in Haiti, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq, I have spoken with many different cultures on the subject of armed conflict, and the one resonating response to invading America is this. “Americans drive pickups that have guns in the back windows, it would be stupid to go against that.” It’s not my service in Special Forces or the Abrams tanks or the Apache helicopters that keep this country safe, it’s my best friend from Oklahoma, Joe Bob, and that’s what the founders of America knew then and what Americans that have never even been in a fist fight will never understand.

This is jsut a bad bill. It has the cart before the horse. We had this ban before, it ended and crime has been trending down. There is historical and current data that could be used right now to understand the impact of this bill. There is no need to pass this bil land then conduct a study over the next 18 month. It is the same old nonsense that asthetics are what make a gun dangerous. It is the person behind the trigger tha makes any weapon dangerous, be it a gun, a knife, a baseball bat, etc. It also capture some really fine hunting rifles and shotguns it it's web, so this is not a Bill that wants to ban "Assault Rifles" it is a ban that wants to ban all guns - rifles, shotguns, pistols, etc. The way this is worded it could very easily be misinterpretted so innocent people become criminals. And lastly, it is against the 2nd amendment of the the U.S., just as the GCA and NFA act were. But no politician has the guts to propose their repeal or challenge them in the Supreme Court

December 10, 2008, 10:33am (report abuse)

The original assault weapons ban did little more than put anti gun activists minds at ease. It was enacted to prevent crime, and it failed. It was rightfully allowed to expire, this would only be one more blow to our economy by putting gun store owners and manufacturers in the unemployment lines. Trying to control guns does nothing to prevent crime and everything to infringe upon the rights and freedoms of the responsible citizen. DO NOT reenact this ban.

This is a bill founded solely on ignorance. An assault weapon is an automatic rifle made for the military, you can not buy anything like that in the civilian market place today or for the last several decades.

This is does nothing to make anyone safer and is a waste of time and money and goes against the US constitution.

You all think this is an issue of simple ignorance? That these "Politicians" lack any knowledge of the constitution? You better think again. To think, that even to most it would be obvious. They know ALL ABOUT what their doing. But the problem is, the people don't. All this oblivious behavior with ignoring all the obvious facts, this is not the behavior of idiots. It's tyranny in motion. Vote all you want for whatever reason, voting is only an illusion to make you feel like you're making a difference. How can one even think the people have a say in anything when things are headed in this direction? It's only a matter of one's simple ability to READ "The Fine Print" of things that can make the difference. It is only when one is properly educated about the situation, that one can take the proper action.

I call upon the Congress of the United States to treat the sickness, and not the symptom. Anything can be used as a lethal weapon, whether it be an "assault rifle" or a rock that is picked up from the ground! Legislation banning anything is only going to increase the sale of that item before the legislation takes effect. The problem is that the law is letting these guns get into the wrong hands to begin with... I, being a law abiding citizen who not only believes in the right and reality of an armed citizenry, but am also an Obama supporter, don't think this is my problem. I am a gun owner, and I don't appreciate being told what I can and cannot have in my gun cabinet, or for that matter concealed upon my person. If you don't want guns getting into the hands of psychos... THEN STOP SELLING PSYCHOS GUNS IN THE FIRST PLACE!!
If the US Congress is going to ban anything in this country, they should start with lobbyists as well as their own corruption.

I fought for my country to protect these rights that they are taking away from us and it makes me want to vomit. Enacting a ban like this does NOTHING to get the guns out of criminals hands. CRIMINALS DON'T OBEY LAWS!!!!! All this bill would do is keep guns out of hard working LAW ABIDING citizens hands. Congratulations America for coming one step closer to everything our founding fathers were against. The government is just closing in farther and farther on our rights as an individual. Also it wouldn't be that simple. As soon as it is clear that the feds are going to confiscate guns, people will resist. They can ban them, but they will never be able to take them away.

Our Founding Fathers were under the tyrany and oppression power. They understood they have the right to live, to defend their right, their liberty, and their way of life. They do not want to happen to their children & grandchildren either. Their work to put the 2nd Amendment in place is no accident. They know law abiding citizens have the right to defend themselves. Guns do not kill by itself, neihter car can drive itself on the road. To say people cannot own guns is like to say people cannot own car. Car kills more people than guns ever could in our country. We do not want the gangster time of Bonnie and Clyde, and Al Copone, but we do not want the tyrany of government either. Agree! Having a semi-auto rifle or two is the at least we can do in our defense as citizens. Look at the countries where people have no way to defend themselves, the government did whatever they wish with them. We have God given right to defend ourselves, our families, relatives and friends, Amen!

Get that? It says "shall NOT apply to" any of the firearms listed in Appendix A" That means your father's or grandfather's guns are safe. At least for now. But why bother listening to reason, you've got hysteria on your side.

Why would I give up my best means of protecting myself and my family?

Touche gentlemen ! Well spoken.

As for the English, God save their Queen ! I don't think the English would want me. God bless them all ..

Maybe instead of people saying "Molon Labe" we should be saying "Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin". It seems to me that gun confiscation is definitely going to happen. When Republicans sponsor such a bill the writing is definitely on the wall.

My apologies to all for being extremely terse.
