May 16, 2008, 6:21pm (report abuse)NO to H.R. 6039. They come into Our country illegally, some get a 'free' education and they do not deserve permanent residence just because they graduated. They should apply as any immigrant should apply and go through the normal process just like the other HONEST immigrants to come to this country. Why reward someone for breaking OUR laws????Duh!!!!!
Saif
May 18, 2008, 7:26am (report abuse)Dear Sue,
The bill will only benefit the HONEST immigrants who have come to US LEGALLY, have spent the first 3 to 5 years studying (Master' degree and above) and have to wait another 5+ years before any hopes of getting permanent residence.
Please don't confuse this group with illegal immigrants.
Vick
May 18, 2008, 3:03pm (report abuse)Sue, this is not about illegals. This is about legal students who came here about 8 years back, finished their study and working in USA for past 5 years legally with no sight of stability in life because of immigration limbo. most of them have started moving to other countries such as Australia, UK, Canada and alongwith it taking innovations and patents.
Lets no lose confuse them with illegals and lets embrace them as they not only pay heavy taxes but also contribute to your's and mine social security and medicare.

May 19, 2008, 1:06pm (report abuse)yes indeed to H.R. 6039. WHy? coz it benefits all. it's a win-win as on one hand it benefits the US economy and prevents a brain drain and on the other it brings a much needed stability in the lives of highly educated LEGAL immigrants.

May 19, 2008, 11:39pm (report abuse)Hope all the House Representatives will think about the Benefits of this bill for both their Country and for the student community who can serve their expertise.

May 20, 2008, 10:59pm (report abuse)Canada also offers better benefits for the international students, its time US HR also understand the value of international students who have earned valuable education and experience to serve their own country .
Either they have to look at it as WIN/WIN option or LOSE/WIN with the Win to the international students.

May 21, 2008, 9:26am (report abuse)Even if the immigrant was here illegally he should be given a permanent residence, just for having completing his masters in STEM.Common if its ok for someone to enter illegally and get in line for green card and citizenship which will happen sooner or later.

May 23, 2008, 11:50am (report abuse)We should not confuse this proposal with illegal immigrants.
I don't think it is possible for illegal immigrants to get admission into graduate school without F-1 visa status. If they cannot get graduate school admission, they do not qualify under this provision.

May 23, 2008, 12:12pm (report abuse)I am a Master's Degree holder from Univ of Texas Arlington. I graduated in 2005 in Electrical Engineering. I am finding it very hard to plan my future in this country due to the present state of affairs of immigration laws. I have many friends who are in the same boat as me. This amendment from congress has been long over due. I also hope that they additionally remove labour Certification requirements for highly skilled people like us. It allows us to apply for green card independent of who our employer is.

Sai,
May 27, 2008, 1:43pm (report abuse)Its a win/win situation for both US economy and International Students if the bill is passed.
truth-teller
June 9, 2008, 12:55am (report abuse)WAKE UP PEOPLE. The American public is SO GULLIBLE it makes me sick. This bill is not about anything but large US corporations getting cheap labor. With half a million unemployed engineers, architects and programmers in this nation, why should we make it WORSE by sponsoring foreigners who will work for less than 1/5 what Americans are paid? Because Bill Gates says so, and we Americans can't think for ourselves.
NK
June 12, 2008, 7:18pm (report abuse)Yes.. this bill should pass. It would help a lot of people.
PLEASE NOTE: ITS NOT ABOUT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.. These people are LEGAL and highly skilled immigrants.
myth-buster
June 13, 2008, 11:42am (report abuse)truth-teller, please get your facts right. 1/5 th of what Amercan make ?? come on. Are you aware that there is a process that looks up prevailing wage in the US market for each job before any legal immigration applicant is considered for an immigrant visa ? Only if the immigrant is paid above the prevailing wage will he/she be eligible.

June 14, 2008, 8:03pm (report abuse)I came to US 7 years back , have 2 advanced degrees from top American Universities , working for last 7 years , paid taxes ...and still waiting
Simon
June 18, 2008, 3:35pm (report abuse)I arrived United States 8 years ago and earned 2 master degrees both in electrical engineering and civil engineering. I work for a company and also paid heavy tax. However, I found that it's very difficult to obtain a green card. Some of my friends who earned master's or PhD moved in to Canada because of this. The bill should pass, it benifits both US economy and the legal international students.
Question to all
June 23, 2008, 1:15pm (report abuse)Friends,
Don't y'all think this bill should include people with Master's in Business Administration from US universities as well? If yes, then we should make our voices heard in the legislature by contacting people like Senator Barbara Boxer.

June 24, 2008, 5:16pm (report abuse)This bill should pass

July 3, 2008, 4:35pm (report abuse)Yep this bill should pass.
Just in my case
The university spent - 15000 + 27000 = 42000 on my stipend and fees for a masters degree. It will be a lot more in case of a docterate.
If you send me back to my home country or lose me to some other country-- who is the loser..go figure...
Priya
July 21, 2008, 7:45pm (report abuse)SHOULD PASS IMMEDIATELY.
Why do you think a US university would give an illegal immigrant the oppourtunuty to enroll in their school. Please get your facts right before leaving comments. This would bring in immense relief to all those who have spent nearly 10 years in the US(legally) and play a key role in the success of major US firms.
ms
July 23, 2008, 3:09pm (report abuse)please pass this as soon as possible, before America looses these jobs to Canada or any other nation with liberal immigrant laws and fewer wait times.
Pat
July 24, 2008, 7:18pm (report abuse)GOOD FOR AMERICA..GOOD FOR EVERYONE..
Ronald
August 6, 2008, 1:25pm (report abuse)Ok, here is the bottom line. People come here for a better life, and most of the students who come here for higher education are not illegal immigrants, you cannot get into a university without valid residency, if you are a citizen and are not aware of that, then you dont belong in this country for being really dumb.
If students who are more qualified, have access to the latest technologies and are really smart are made to suffer due to bureaucracy, they will eventually go back (read india and china) start industries out there and sell the same stuff back to you for cheap (1/5 the price).
Now figure who is the loser !
This bill should pass
August 20, 2008, 4:03pm (report abuse)Already lot of highly skilled professionals have defected to countries like Canada, UK and many other Euro countries.
IF USA wants to stay a head of the game and be a leader in Technology, this bills has to pass.

September 25, 2008, 5:14pm (report abuse)Guys! In the best interests of the Nation and the shaken economy, the bill should be passed immediately. One, if you make the deserving qualified and hard working H1 people wait so long, they are gonna flee to some country with better opportunity and status. There are thousands n thousands of H1B visa holders waiting for thie green card, so that they would buy a house (the mortgage crisis and foreclosures would end with their help dude!). Rite now, they are not able to take a buy decision, as they have been kept hanging because of the long Green card process.. Whose loss is this man. Open your eyes and give them their rightful due. They are hardworking people who have contributed so much to the country, their company, the revenue department etc. PASS THE BILL NOW! This is one bill we can celebrate for the rest of our lives..
David
September 25, 2008, 5:21pm (report abuse)Moreover, these are legal immigrants. So much ado about the other illegal immigrants and there are legislators trying to make their status legal. How does it help the Nation and the economy? They are very much the blue collar workers making a small income. Hoe come can they contribute via revenue? or to the house buys? or to the education system? or the country's development?
On the other hand we have the qualified, deserving H1B holders who have moved into US the legal way, lived the legal way, adn want to contribute everything they have to the Nation (education, money etc). Lets all pass the HR 6039 bill and make the Nation tick. Let not other competing Nations and economy snatch these best people away from us. We need them.
Marina
October 2, 2008, 2:05pm (report abuse)The bill should pass immediately in everyone's best interests.

October 2, 2008, 2:09pm (report abuse)H.R. 6039 WOULD DEFINITELY BE THE BEST MEASURE TO RETAIN ALL HIGHLY SKILLED PEOPLE. IT WOULD ALSO BE A GREAT WAY TO EXPEDITE THE GREEN CARD PROCESS OF STEM PEOPLE.
Never Enough
October 14, 2008, 2:59pm (report abuse)If companies can't find skilled US workers then they sure as **** aren't looking. There are Engineers and IT and OTHERS looking for jobs everyday...HIRE THEM! Unemployment is in the million plus...this would just discourage American students from seeking these degrees, actually it does this already.
Charlie
October 16, 2008, 11:20am (report abuse)There are a significant number of well-qualified but unemployed U.S. citizens looking for work. Why should we open up for more foreign workers in this situation. This legislation, as well as other similar bills, must be defeated. A NO vote is the right answer.
Parul
October 22, 2008, 1:31pm (report abuse)Charlie.. look at it this way! The country requires truly qualified and deserving candidates at all levels of employment. It could be anyone deserving, whether already citizens or aspiring citizens. vote in favor of this bill.
Charlie
October 28, 2008, 9:57am (report abuse)Parul,
As long as a person already citizen a citizen needs work there should be no one allowed in to take that job. Period.
ANNONYMOUS
October 28, 2008, 2:24pm (report abuse)don't oppose the bill with lame answers. look at what is good for the country. We need good qualified people. i favor this bill, and I'm a citizen.
Charlie
October 28, 2008, 3:15pm (report abuse)Nothing lame about it. If a citizen needs a job the country should do what is necessary to provide that person a job. That is what is good for the country.

October 29, 2008, 6:10pm (report abuse)Hey could someone tell me about this bill

November 15, 2008, 8:29am (report abuse)Did bachelors and masters both from here, still when it came to getting a job, even after a successful interview, was rejected because of my visa status. Please pass this bill.
Thanks
James
November 16, 2008, 2:31am (report abuse)Ashmita,
Why should the people of the U.S. allow you to take a job from a citizen? With the growing unemployment problem in this country there are qualified citizens out looking for a job. Let's make sure every citizen is employed first before any employment visas are issued.

November 17, 2008, 3:28am (report abuse)NO IFS N NO BUTS.....THIS BILL SHOULD PASS N IT WILLLLLL..............
James
November 17, 2008, 10:42am (report abuse)Nijjar,
Not likely, since it is still in the subcommittee and has had no action since June. Beyond that, no member of the U.S. congress will vote for this if he or she wants to stay there. Too many American people are out of work to be bringing any more foreigners in.
Amit
November 23, 2008, 8:28pm (report abuse)This bill should definitely pass because this is in support of talented people who have completed their Masters or higher degree and are perfectly eligible to acquire respectable jobs here as any citizen would.
