To: RP. You asked:
"Most of the H1Bs I've worked with are very junior programmers how do they create 3 jobs?"

Here's how that works. For each H1B programmer, the following 3 jobs are created:

1) A competent American analyst to communicate with the customers to gather requirements, etc., because they can't understand the H1B programmer.

2) A competent American programmer to write the pseudo-code and babysit/hand-hold the H1B programmer while he writes the awful, bug-filled code that most H1Bs are known for.

3) A competent American programmer to rewrite the awful, bug-filled code that the H1B programmer produces.

How 'H1Bs' create jobs

September 10, 2008, 5:15pm (report abuse)

TA, RM- the way immigrants create jobs is by facilitating the working of the industry that they specialize in. It's the same way that machines and then computers were seen as a threat to workers initially but went on to establish industries that could employ millions of people. Don't foregt that America has been at the cutting edge of technology and has maintained its competetiveness by having the best immigration policy. Curtailing that policy in times like this when productivity is the only thing that can take us through is I think, a big blunder. Finally, does anyone remember the 1940's joke: America had a better nuclear programme than Germany because our German scientists were better than theirs?!

Oh, that's why the unemployment rate is now at over 6% -- because of all the jobs that the H1Bs have created. Thanks for enlightening us!

H1Bs did not cause the credit crisis. Total number of unemployed people increased by 2.2MM last 12 months- surely they could not all have been displaced by H1Bs. I suspect, there is more unemployment being caused by people living outside our boundaries because we are loosing our competitiveness. Might as well bring them within our borders!

I think this bill will benefit all those people who have been working for the last 10 years and contributing a lot to the US Economy and Taxes. I will be relieved if this bill passes as this will allow me to work for myself rather than working for a employer who take a huge cut on my hourly rate just because he sponsored my H1B visa. This will be the dream come true for all those hard working immigrants who really need to fulfill their 'American Dream'.

New legislation to include kids who are in USA, studying in Colleges waiting for there visa availablity through their parents, should also get green card immediately. The waiting period is too long and by the time they complete the college they are still out of status waiting for the visa availability, it is unfair to leave them ,They should be included and full benefit should be given.

We should include kids in one of the legislation who are in USA, waiting for Visa availability in through their parents, who are going to College and are out of status right now.It will be unfair if we do not include them, because kids coming to US getting green cards but who are already here are out of status. We should include them other it will be unfair.

RP, TA and the like,
This is about recapturing unused GC's.
There might be good Tech guys where you work, but most of the folk I know are good at communicating, just like you do, the code that others have written. They are usually very good at surviving through suckup, by virtue of their citizenship and not by education or skill level or work ethic, complianing and bitching about H1B's, LEGAL immigrants, pretty much anything that doesnt look like them. For the starters, though US is a capitalistic country, its a small scale industry to bitch about corporate greed and assign the same tag to anything that the airheads dont get. If a H1B programmer sucks, I havent seen any company spare them and just loose money on them. In Tech industry, quality matters, not quantity, as its highly competetive.

If I were, IBM, Microsoft, Google, or any industry that is worth its salt, I would rather hire a smart guy, bid for him, hire him, and fight for him under any unfair standards and unfair critisism by people who cant compete, who are typically xenophobic, and sometimes I myself will venture to educate them, as its my money thats at stake. Also, I will try, however difficult it is for them to understand, to explain that its good for my company, and american greed never failed, and that good and smart programmers from these countries didnt growup with weed, dont think that playing computergames is different than computer programming, bad work ethic, bitching and complaining without taking a deep look at themselves first, making crude comments about peoples accents, ..oh, dont even get me started!

Ofcourse, when you remove competetion, you think you would get ahead, but at what cost?
I want to ask you people, have you ever worked with IBM, Bearingpoint, GE, Google..etc?

They are literally RUN by these so caled LEGAL immigrants. Your hotmail is developed by an Indian programmer, Sabir Bhatia.20% of all the scientists at NASA(I will get you a pass to visit the command center if you want to visit) are from one of these countries, so would you rather cut off 20% engines of spcae crafts before sending them over your head?
Taking away the competetion never produced jobs or a superior product. Its a global world, and companies need globally competetive people and not just local skater dudes and xenophobic hatemongers.
You might have been displaced by a H1B employee. Call him names, a bad programmer, curse his country, but at the end of the day, he will stay here, legally. Look around you, and google for a percentage of Indian doctors. Do you want 20% of population to die in medically underserved areas?

I really admire your strong feelings about LEGAL immigration.

Make a commitment to yourself not to go to an Immigrant Doctor, Immigrant Gas Station, or use an immigrant email programs like hotmail.
Also, look at the ER room nurses next time you are in a major wreck before looking at the small eyed Asian Doctor that you might not want to operate on you. Perhaps he might be the only one, waiting for his GC, working on call, 24/7. How do I know right?, my brother is one, on H1B, and yes, he will get a Greencard if this passes. And he did save like what around 200 lives so far, before looking at the skin color or birth place or legal citizenship of the flesh packs that come through ER doors.

No. We are sticking here and making tons of money and sending some back home, to educate more people and get them here as well, as this is a land of oppurtunity for the hard working and as long as people work hard, they will make it here. As for saving people back home, I agree with you. If he earns here and sends even a quarter of his savings back home, that would produce 100's more doctors and will help our country even better. I assure you I will pass your concern to him.

Thanks again for all the nasty misinformed words my dear friends..I have too many good american friends to generalise and call all of them the same. But its this hate that fuels equally strong feelings and makes me and most of my fellow LEGAL immigrants stand up and help as many brown people as humanly possible.
I promise to keep up the work for the coming 2-3 generations and make atleast 100 doctors and many more engineers there and make it a little easier for them...thanks again,

So, Americans don't work hard only immigrants do? I really take issue with being called a xenophobe and a hatemonger. I'm a Doctor and have saved my share.

You make it sound like this country would crumble without all the foreign workers. How on earth did we make it this far? Beleive me you (foreign workers) get much more from the arrangment than we do. Otherwise why would you be here?

I had a real hard time following what you were saying. Do you work for customer support?

Why R U Afraid..

September 12, 2008, 12:36pm (report abuse)

Why are u afraid of immigrants? if u r good u will able to keep yr job. You should ask this questions to US employers and not to H1-B immigrants. Ask your US employers who are shipping yr jobs to India for their profit. India based TCS,INFOSYS, WIPRO, SATYAM and may more body shops are the real cheap and they are the only one because of good American workers are loosing jobs in America. There are some other INDIAN body shops too who will get cheap labor from India with fake resumes.Just support future American President to stop Outsourcing so that you will get all your jobs back. If I will get Green Card, I will come out from IT industry because of these Indian Body Shops. I will not compete Americans in America. I will start my own non-IT business and will complete my American Dream. I know Indians have spoiled this IT field but so many of Indian IT workers are good with Masters degrees from US universities. Outsourcing is taking your jobs..not people who are in US taking yr jobs.

RP,
You and a doctor! Hard to believe that a person who reads so much cant understand simple things. God save your patients! Call center people in India are usually trained saying 30=13, meaning 30 year old on the other line is usually equalent to 13 year old Indian kid WRT commonsense. Though I dont work with customer support, after seeing your comments, now I know what they mean!

County wouldnt crumble, but its now called the RISE OF THE REST.

Will see ya soon, after I open one more office, and yeah, sorry to disappoint, I am not in to Customer Support, I own a business in this country and employ some of the dumbest people who comepete with some of the brown people. Its fun to watch actually:-)

You bounce all over the place and are very hard to understand. Are you a 13 year old Indian WRT commonsense? BTW we all know that call centers in India are a joke just ask Dell.

Also, God doesn't need to save my patients. I save them. Even though I'm obviously not as smart or as qualified as the immigrant doctors you refer to.

You must be a real sharp business owner if you employ "some of the dumbest people". I'll bet it's fun to watch them since they are so easy to look down on.

Overall I'm pro legal immigration. I just get annoyed when immigrants say they don't take jobs from Americans and then demand green cards. Although it's still much better than illegal immigration.

Every one of us are self centric if not selfish. I am a legal non immigrant waiting in the long queue to get GC. But I respect the concerns addressed by the sons and daughters of this soil.

It is their country and if they believe we are threatening their life, job or education they have every right to express this.

We are expressing our concerns legally, aren't we?

There is no point in debating over this issue over and over. The law makers are more concerned than us about this country. They know more than us, which is better for this country.

If they allow us to get the GC quickly, trust me it should also be for the betterment of this country. Or if they decide to show us doors, that is also for the same.

During my 3+ years of stay in this country, I have never felt that I am living in an alien land. They have always been compassionate. The law protects me and my family as much as it protects the family of an american.

They need more of illegal, uneducated, baby popping, criminal elements to the tunes of 12-13 millions, but dont understand the value of 500,000 highly educated, english speaking, high income group that can bail them out of this economic recession...if they had understanding, they wouldnt root for their own downfall. Remember ARCELOR? Remember JAGUAR? The Indians are richer legally in the country that ruled them illegally for 400 years. And they are buying companies in Europe and Asia and Australia like crazy, staying IN India. Thats the thing you need to do. Go Back and comepete from back home and buy out the companies here....

I came to U.S for better life..!! is this the better life where USCIS will rob people and U.S. government will support them???

People were telling there is no corruption in U.S..What is this?? I have seen very high level corruption in U.S. Unfortunately there is no one who can take my complaint in United States! This is open robbery..! 1st they kill so many in Iraq and now they r looting legal immigrants! I wish they will all go to hell who took my hard earned money and did not give me anything..!

USCIS needs to take some training in IT field. They are really poor and incompetent people..they are dump and no idea what they are doing..shame on USCIS..and Shame on U.S!

They should outsource this kind high level tech work to INDIA. Any good techie will get this work done within couple of months!

Why they are telling this is "Advance Country"? USCIS is following process of 18th century! bunch of idiots..!

USCIS is talking about only 2.5 M applications..how big their DB might be? Lets say 1T? Now How much time will it take to write a query to get results for PD

Just because a new group of tree from Asia is arising doesnt mean You all have to ignore and hate them!...

Education is the only answer for all here.

US has been an impression for one and all...every individual talks about American Dream ---Now I would like to know What is that -What is special in that?

If that question inspires you to stay here ,the same applies to one and all who want to-

I am puzzled-A Doctor in this page answering with anger and hatred is not a good ethical behavior. This shows how racist a person can become-You want job for your kids -They will get what they want - But How do you treat your patients?

Very funny-God Bless though! This is really scary -People love States for their hospitals ,science , doctors-and this - A doctor? Are you really a doctor?:-)

First: Morons who think this bill will bring 550000 foreign workers every year need to understand their country's immigration policies (MIGRANT VISA vs. IMMIGRANT VISA)

SECOND: I have worked with american IT guys, most are high school grads and very poor analytical skills.

THIRD: Highly skilled and legal immigrants can go back to their countries( and with the way the things are in US, we might as well) but let me remind some of the anti immigrant commetators here. Problem is your greedy countrymen (CEO) who are running IT industry and sending millions of IT and service sector jobs to India. How u gonna stop them. If we leave; those jobs are going to India the very next morning.

FOURTH: Most of these immigrants have work authorization cards (temp green cards). This bill will expedite the last stage for a green card and its a one time process. Not gonna happen every year. Basically makes life just a little bit easier for legal, higly skilled, analytically strong, highly qualified, law abiding immigrants.

To KC and Patti Propst,
Your comments are perfect examples of how misinformed you are.
1) The bill will give greencards to people who are already working in the US.
2) The visa numbers sought to be recaptured were already scheduled to be provided to immigrants but expired due to the inefficiency of USCIS.
3) By sending everyone home as KC said, do you think you'll get your job back ? Read the news, see how American corporations, banks and the government have played with the lives of common people like you and me. We, immigrants too are undergoing the same crisis that you are facing. Difference is if you are out job, you can stay back and search for one. For us, loss of our job means loss of our legal status and we are deported.
Put yourself in our shoes for a while.

If you still think otherwise, what are you smoking ?

What about higly skilled, analytically strong, highly qualified, law abiding American workers who lost their jobs to H1-B visa replacement workers? There is a movement in this country to stop the wholesale firing of American citizens from their jobs because it is cheaper to bring workers in from India, get trained in the US an then replace the American. We are angry, fed up, we have had enough and we can't take anymore.

So shoot the messenger ? If your American employer finds the H1B worker hardworking, intelligent, ready to put in more hours without a word, why should the H1B person be blamed ?

An American worker does not have the sword of illegality and deportation hanging over his/her head. Put yourself in the shoes of a H1B worker who has to live in a suitcase, moving from project to project, state to state, working on a small cut of the contract rate decided for the job. The major chunk is eaten by his employer and the American Manager.

I've seen and experienced this all in my 8+ years of working here. If you think its the H1B worker who is responsible for your plight, you ought to get your head checked.

I am absolutely appalled at the grammar being used by people who call themselves educated and intelligent. I would never approve correspondence being sent out to a customer with the grammar I have witnessed being used on this website. Where in heavens name is your pride? An education is only as good as the benefits derived from it. An education is NOT a license to pompously boast and arrogantly sneer at those you feel superior to. An education does not make you superior. Common sense, innovation, value added job performance are just a few of the attributes that define a workers value to a company.

Great!!! If you have common sense, you are innovative and you are adding value to your job and other attributes....How come you are jobless? Why would companies select H1B workers than more qualified people as you mentioned? Probably you are talking about people who are working on H1B. Cheers dude.

Reading all of these posts, I'm appalled at the grammer, mispelling, etc. I'm an immigrant. I've assimilated. Learn the language for crying out loud. Try to fit it. Get out of your social groups. And quit whining! If you don't like it, go back to where you came from.

Oh look who learned to spell grammar. Good progress. Now learn one more thing. You said "An education is NOT a license to pompously boast and arrogantly sneer at those you feel superior to"

"There is a movement in this country to stop the wholesale firing of American citizens from their jobs because it is cheaper to bring workers in from India, get trained in the US an then replace the American"

H1B are engineers, if they don't have 2 years of prior experience their H1B gets rejected, "H1B are cheaper" .... in your dreams. We are paid equally or more. There is one and only one incentive for the companies, H1B will work hard and will be more competetive cos they have to keep that job.

As I mentioned in my earlier post this bill is about expediting the green card process. If all of you who are against it have their will; that doen't affect the job situation. These guys will get their greencard, its just that they will get it in 3 years instead of 1.

"US companies Killing us jobs"

One of my friend works for IBM India. This is what I found. Every few months IBM hires folks in india and send them to US on indian salaries. They come on L1 visas. L1 visas have no limit but they are offered for upto 9 months. IBM india HR is very busy cos they have get new boat load every few months.

All these folks that are so angry about this bill should be looking at the practices of American corporations.

Ask your reresentatives as to what they are doing to stop L1 visas.

Guys if all those jobs that have gone to India (courtesy of greedy companies and incompetent lawmakers) and all those L1 visa people being brought in here by big corporations were to stop, i don't think any one wud have any problem with legal immigration (some thing that has been in this county since so many years)

Bottom line:

You can not blame the loss of jobs on H1B people. It happening to everyone (including H1B with more severe effects) due to poor economical conditions. Whether this bill passes or not, it will not effect the job situtation AT ALL. People in this queue will get GC not immediately but may be after few years.

As someone mentioned above that some H1B guy lied about his experience and he fired him. My question is how he got hired first place? Couldn't you detect this during interview itself? Now you see where is the problem? Also you can not generalize from one case anything.

So my friends please understand this bill will make life for certain people easy without impacting others.

Delayed

September 22, 2008, 11:28am (report abuse)

Even if they dont want to pass this bill...Doesnt matter-World is wide open for open hearts. But stop blaming the H1B workers.

Once you enter it is quite easy to get the GC and Citizenships in other means. But we poor so called unqualified H1B workers are going through a tough process not through any other -Its employment based - Qualifications based and beacause of poor ingorance no one seeems to understand that.

How long can it get delayed -Everone needs a stop clock to stop something.Things will get better and best to us.

It's so ridiculous when I see websites calling us unskilled ,unqualified ,cheap.Shame.How long can they hurt us and make us unhappy?

I feel we should scrutinise the quality of the legal immigrants with respect to their qualification & value of their skills, but we shouldnot delay their Green Card due to bureaucratic delays. Remember this country has been made by smart immigrants. Imagine Intel, Google getting started in Asia due to lack of smart people ... ;-)

After this bil only people from India will get jobs in this country. American workers will have to go overseas to get jobs once the 500000 indians come here.

Why don't you understand the bill. Please go to grad school to understand it. This bill is to use the unused GCs from decades and the people who are already here and working will get this. Do you even know that, if we miss the payroll for one month, it will be a problem for us to get GC. Don;t talk Nonsense please.

This bill will promote the economy of the nation because the people who have pending GC's are put on hold in buying houses, cars since their status is yet pending.

To whoever called me an idiot for ending a sentence with a preposition? This rule has outlived its usefulness. Please read the new standards at this website.

You seem to think that idiocy depends upon the misuse of old outdated grammar rules.
Shown below is a website that explores grammatical errors made by famous authors.

By your standards all of these great authors should be labeled as idiots. I assume you will be available to take their place? After all, it is you who is the superior one. Society will bow to your great intellect and beg for your inclusion into their countries. I envy you, for you are the Great Brain that dumb Americans have been waiting for. Earlier you said :

"I am absolutely appalled at the grammar being used by people who call themselves educated and intelligent"

See it's you who started associating grammatical/spelling errors with intelligence and education.

Now you say:

"...By your standards all of these great authors should be labeled as idiots..."

You are an idiot now for arguing against your own post.

I'm very surprised by the arrogance of these foreign workers. I've seen lot's of comments like, "can you afford to loose me?" Give me a break who do you think was doing your job before you were? To think that US employers use foreigner workers instead of Americans for any reason besides the fact that they are cheaper is a joke.

Everyone understands that this bill doesn't technically add any new foreign workers to the US, except nurses. What it does allow is that all these (550K) newly green carded workers can now leave their current positions and compete directly with Americans for jobs. How is that good for the jobless American workers?

America is in real trouble right now. We may be heading into a depression and jobs are going to get even more difficult to find. It's time to think of America and Americans first for a change.

Thanks
