I noticed the open congress site will not come up anymore. The front page came up but no comments. Anyway, there is an article on the front page that states that congress wants to attach the UI extensions onto the war spending bill but are not very enthusiastic. I call for my last check tommorrow. With the cost of gas and food the numbers are much worse since they gave out the last extensions three years ago.

BUSH SR. gave unemployment extensions during his presidency...It's only right for Bush Jr.-George to do the same...or defenitely he will go down in history as the worst president ever!...and by the way his daughter is getting married this weekend, so he needs to sign the bill so positive energies be at the wedding.

Unemployed since October 2007 -- Hundreds of resumes sent out with no response. Doors are continously closing on my face. This situation is hitting the very core of the American Family... desintegrating because of this! The focus needs to be NOW -- much damage has already been done but the attention needs to be turned around and save some families from total disaster!! Please pass this legislation NOW--You CANNOT wait any longer--and we can't either!!

Over Syndrome

May 7, 2008, 1:05pm (report abuse)

I never thought I would see this happen. Sending out resumes over and over only to hear, " Your over qualified. Or, "this job requires a lot of Overtime" when what they are really trying to say is "your over 65, over grey, and over weight."
Now, I find myself without a job, Over extending my unemployment and not yet Over the hump to where I can collect a full Social Security Benefit.
I AM JUST OVER IT! The lease you folks could do is pass this legislation NOW!!! To help folks out who are truely trying to seek employment. With the prices of food and gas and the economy the way it is now, I can't afford to continue to look for a job. What am I to do?

I have been unemployed since 09/07. I have lived in Florida all my life. I have two 3 ring binders that have all the jobs that I have applied too. Yes our government needs to pass the bill 5749. For all of you that are working and are on this site, "GET OFF". Go to your site, "How to screw the people who want to work hard but can't" Oh, thats right, your not "unemployed". To the rest of us, we need to fight for this. I say that if this not passed that we as unemployed Americans, start a campaign to not vote for anyone, let's see how the rich feel about that.

How long does it take for the Government to make a decision to pass an EMERGENCY Unemployment extension. "Emergency" to me, has always meant NOW, IMMEDIATELY, TODAY - Not to sit back and wait for the "fire" to get bigger and larger. I can only say a prayer that the extension is passed and for the many THOUSANDS & THOUSANDS that struggle everyday to make what little we have left to feed our families, put a roof over our heads, and put gas in cars.
Bush - Do the right thing and pass this law - TODAY.

While I am in favor of passing the proposed emergency unemployment act, it concerns me that comments like yours, which are incorrect and misleading, will hurt the credibility of the rest of us who understand and try to correctly articulate the case for unemployment extension. While it is a fact that EMPLOYERS pay into their state funds (which are state-federal initiatives) each state is different with respect to what it withholds from EMPLOYEE paychecks. Most states do no require that employees pay into the fund. It is my understanding that with the excepton Alaska and NJ, employees are not required to pay into the fund. In other other states it is an employer's option as to whether the cost is shared with the employee. Perhaps you live in NJ and don't know that the laws are different from state to state. I would advise everyone to check out the facts before they state them as such.

I for am consumed with searching every available website to find out what the status is regarding HR 5749, as I am sure millions are as well. As I sit here - unemployed, with all my unemployment benefits exhausted. I hope that Bush had a wonderful, fabulous time at his daughters weddings - as the rest of the millions unemployed try to put a gallon a gas in our car at $4.00 a gallon, with milk at $4.00 a gallon as well. I can barely afford paper products and laundry aids, let along putting some real food on the table. I can not even imagine as to what does through BUSH's head as to why he has not signed this bills, allowing us to have the meager daily life needs. Our lives in on HOLD until BUSH decides to sign that bill. My gosh - how does it take to realize the American people are in dire straights.

I guess you're considered a humanitarian when you send millions of dollars to other countries to help them out but when is the Gov't going to look after it's own people? Was laid off last summer in the automotive field and have had a couple temp jobs here and there but the benefits ae now out. I would love to take the advice of all these geniouses on here and go get a job but I am a single parent with joint custody of my kids so leaving the state realy isn't an option. No, job, no unemployment equalx no income at all. And I also have just been informed I need to find a new place to live but who will rent to somebody with no income? This bill is a necessity for the American people!
I heard it will get vetoed by Bush because of the Iraq funding agenda attached to this bill. Get our soldiers out of there and we won't have to fund the war on oil!

I have been unemployed for 7 months now, and I want a job more than anything but in the meantime I need this bill to pass. The stimulus checks that everyone who filed taxes will get is not going to help us who have run out of unemployment, and besides the stimulus money is going to the rich as well. I want to know where this stimulus money is coming from? maybe it is coming from our extended unemployment benifits and that is why the bill hasn't passed.

Kudos to Sen Kennedy for realizing what the others on Capital Hill should have realized. I have been out of work for 7 months as well and will exhaust my benefits this week. I've no clue HOW I am going to survive with NO job, NO $$ and soon, NO place to live. The bank account is almost cleaned out and afraid I'll be left on the streets. The WONDERFUL STIMULUS monies that was to be THE fix for the nation did nothing for me except pay my utilities that were on the verge of getting shut off and put gas in my car so I could get around to interview. I am SICK to death that we have to BEG for help from our government when the government is the first to drop loads of monies into some other nations economy for something stupid. I have been unemployed since December. However, I was fired for reasons other than what my employer stated. I am deaf and he just didn't want to be bothered with helping me keep my job under the Americans with Disabilities Act. I have been looking for work like all of you, and it is extra hard for a disabled person to get work. I have considered telling the American Workplace to kiss off and start my own in-house business selling gardening and small farm equipment and supplies. I feel that we will all be needing this type of stuff when it gets really bad and we all have to grow our own food. I could go on disability but I want to keep working. Good Luck to you all and I hope you all find good jobs. I also hope we all get the unemployment extension too.

This is so crazy, can't everyone see that this is truly and emergency, and that people are going to be out on the streets. It is heading for conditions like in the great depression. It is very sad that this bill has to go back to the house because they are afraid that Bush will veto it. Shame on you President Bush, I am sure if it was your friends or family in this kind of predicament this bill would have been passed through a long time ago. The congress will be looking at maybe even voting again this week, the 1st week in June 2008. Contact your congress men/women and make sure they are on the right side. I have lost everything now.. been out of work since Sept07 and I do not have anything left. I am homeless now, my money ran out in April and I could not pay my bills. I understand that we all need help. we just have to hang in there, I believe congress will do the right thing. Let me tell you what happened to me today, two weeks ago I submitted an application for employment at the RV park for a maintenance position. Today I get a call that says they hired someone with more experience. I saw him the park manager he is almost twice my age (I am 44). This is why we can't get jobs. Us baby boomers are out of luck against getting jobs as the retirees are getting hired (Gee, I thought they got retirement and social security). At this rate the rest of us won't get either. Unemployed and applying for jobs and not being selected for the position is everywhere. I know some of you out there our older adults working and looking for a job (parttime/fulltime). This hits all of us. You cannot live just on social security. We all need this bill passed asap. By the way the job I applied for was three times less then what I was making before I was Laid-off.

I was laid off last year..worked a seasonal job over Christmas to try to pay bills and feed my family. Got laid off once again after Christmas. I have been getting unemployment and looking every day for work ever since. I had a couple interviews-no job offers. I am college educated, always had at least one job. I had THREE jobs while in college. Now I can't find a job to save my life. Thankfully my husband is still employed but was told on Monday to expect a layoff sometime this month. Then what??????? We NEED jobs, the extension will help but what I want most is a job!!!!!

THERE ARE NO GOOD JOBS IN ILLINOIS

June 4, 2008, 5:16pm (report abuse)

I am a middle aged mom of 2 kids. I got laid off my construction job and have been unemployed for over 7 months now. The unfortunate truth is good jobs don't exist here anymore. I went on interviews but the job offers paid 30% to 40% less then I was previously making, and without benefits. I held out thinking I could get a good paying job but it STILL has not happened. I am really hurting and can't believe the DEMOCRATS are turning their back on us by trying not to include H.R.5749 into the Iraqi War Funding bill. How can DEMOCRATS turn their backs on us like this? The Senate approved the unemployment extension with a veto less majority. What is up with this Congress that they can't help their own people, we are the ones who need it most?????

UNEMPLOYMENT RATES ARE INACCURATE

June 4, 2008, 5:27pm (report abuse)

State unemployment rates are not accurate because they do not include those of us who have exhausted benefits after 6 months. There are over 11,100 comments about H.R. 5749. One thing these politicians may want to keep in mind, is we are 4,000,000 strong and we are watching C-span and watching who votes on this bill.

Check out today entity on www.unemployed workers.org. The site indicates that HR 5749 may be dropped from the Bill so that the remaining bill can pass. I fell on the floor after reading it.

Thanks TAKE ACTION for the toll free number 1877-3311223, Speaker Nancy Pelosi's and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer’s office. You can leave a message to each one if you ask the receptionist. I urge everyone to do this. It's not dead yet but it doesn't look good for HR 5749. Thanks Bush for nothing and the same to our spineless leaders(Nancy P. and Steny Hoyer) for caving in to Bushs demands. Copy and past this link also for more information on the bill. http://www.unemployedworkers.org/june4alert.cfm

It appears that STENY HOYER AND NANCY PELOSI will again jettison or throw out the unemployment assistance to appease GEORGE W BUSH. The democrats are not fighting for its party and I will vote Republican in the future. Short of jumping out of the window I dont know what to do !!!

It's not going to do us any good just posting here. I bet the people in office don't even read these boards! We need to call and keep calling until the message box is full! Pelosi will not be reelected if she drops this from the bill. Unemployment in her state is among the highest in the nation. 6.2% And that is not counting all of us who have allready ran out of unemployment! In my field most of us are out of work. No new housing, no new work! JUST KEEP CALLING!!! 1-877-331-1223

What is the problem? Why not extend the unemployment benefits? It's sad when you can't even get a job a fast food restaurant. I guess everyone will need to be homeless before anything is done. We need to have the unemployment benefits extended...NOW!!!

This Bill is in DIRE NEED of being passed ASAP. It seems like we are all in the same situation here ane need money for housing and food. It astonishes me that every morning when I seek unemployment, I find the Classifed Section of my paper empty. If everyone pitched in and called their Representative for their area or their Senator (easy to find on the net), and left a message in support of extending unemployment benefits, we might have a good chance at seeing this through. Today, I had a very polite conversation with Senator Casey's secretary (PA.) on Capitol Hill, and I plan on calling back every other day to see how this Bill is moving along. Our voices need to be heard!

I sent an email to Bill OReilly, maybe if enough emails are sent this extension will get a little exposure and put more pressure on the government, it may not do any good, but it sure can't hurt!!!
Here's the email address,,,,

It would be a mistake not to extend unemployment benefits, (1) It will keep monies flowing within the system, which is needed to help people to continue to pay mortgages, buy food, pay bills, etc. (2) If the extension takes effect soon benefit payouts will be added to 2009 income tax gross, which will increase the amount the of tax the IRS will collect for 2009 and also increase income tax revenue to all 50 states, in other words there will be a return that will lower the initial payout cost, (3) Lets not forget that is was the taxpayer that bailed out Bear Sterns an investment firm, not a bank and indirectly JP Morgan, a bank, the reason little to almost no government regulation. (4) It is the right humanitarian thing to do.

Does anyone know the current status of this bill? Have been out of work since October 2007, exhausted my unemployment benefits, and have found that trying to find a part time or even temporary job is as hard as trying to find a full time job!!! WE NEED THIS PASSED ! AND SOON!
