H.R. 219, The Social Security Preservation Act of 2007 (31 comments ↓)
H.R. 219 would amend title II of the Social Security Act to ensure the integrity of the Social Security trust funds by requiring the Managing Trustee to invest the annual surplus of such trust funds in marketable interest-bearing obligations of the United States and certificates of deposit in depository institutions insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and it would protect such trust funds from the public debt limit.

the 'Bill' should cover some exceptions such as war and disasters that would threaten the enation

Why is this HR219 two years waiting? It all sounds simple enough to me: taxpayer from MA.
Vicki Baker
My husband and I are both retired and depend on our Social Security benefits to pay our living expenses. We have some additional income from investments, but the hole in our budget without Social Security would be terrible. These funds have been promised to older Americans, and to many it is the difference between "living" and "just existing". Our homeless and other social costs would soar without Social Security.
William H. Kraus
Please take some positive action on HR219. We owe it to our children & grandchildren to keep the Social Security safety net viable.
jerome sweeney
I am in favor of protecting the Social Security Trust Fund from the diversion of its trust funds to other purposes. Surely every Congressman who is aware of the meaning of a trust fund and for knows that it is dishonest and unconscionable for the Congress to divert such funds to other uses. I support a law making it illegal to so divert those funds to any use except in furtherance of the social security law. But, I also object strenuously to any form of privatization of the Social Security program.
M. Riske
If the people that have the control over how our SS dollars are spent had to live on SS when they got to be seniors they would understand and be more protective of it. Maybe they should not get such huge government pensions and try living on Social Security.
Peter Malycky
Its my money I do not want to give it to PORK!!!!!!!!!!
Lou Treadway
It appears members of Congress do not understand what a trust fund is. Passage of the proposed bill would insure the solvency of the SS Trust Fund for our children and grandchildren without raising the SS tax. Everyone should bombard their Senators and Representatives to support this bill. The time has long since passed for its passage.
Rose Bevis
This bill should have been passed by now. The first time I saw it was in 2004. How long does it take to pass a bill to protect social security from elected officials misuse of a Trust??? This a "no brainer." Get it passed now.
Linda
Congress should have passed this bill years ago when it was first introduced. It has been introduced in every Congress since the 104th. It never makes it out of committee. Not once have they even voted on it. It is a disgrace that our elected officials are able to get away with this.
W Peck
If this bill was first introduced in the 104th congress, we the general public need to know why this Bill can not even get out of commitee. It has been reported that $2.071 trillion has been siphoned off the SOC SEC Trust Fund for varies pork barrel projects. This type of spending by our ELECTED GOVERMENTS U S CONGRESS has got to stop.
E Paul
This bill should definitely pass. No question. We the people of the United States paid our dues to receive Social Security fair and square. The government needs to stand back and keep their hands out of it. Leave our Social Security money alone. Pass the bill already !!!!!
Theresa Cibotti
Why hasn't this bill been passed? It has been introduced for years and they never do anything but keep on taking money for things they like when it is money that the taxpayer is saving for their future and it is not for Congress to spend. This is unacceptable.
Paula Jean
Isn't it too bad that the general public isn't allowed to vote on this bill come election time?
No wonder Congress has their own social security system and not the one of the general public.
James Hall
It is too bad that most congressmen will not even reply to their constituents when they ask for a stand on the issues. It appears like an escape from accountability.
Carol
VOTE RON PAUL for 2008 President.
Guided by our CONSTITUTION he is the man responsible for this bill and others that favor American citizens. He is on the Rep. ticket.
Daid Schoepf
Social Security should not be paid to persons living outside the US.
They earned it here, keep it here!
Janice Williams
This stinks. How long does it take to pass this? It's ridiculous. It's in the best interest of "we the people" and future generations. Get the lead out and pass it!
Lois
Why aren't the news media blaring this across the land? Most people have no idea this thievery is going on. Peter Jennings, where are you?
Charles L. Wisner
I would be remiss in not admitting that our congressional representatives have to find ways to support thier constituients. However, the S.S. Trust is a SACRED Trust that the citizens have paid into it for thier surival and it should not even be considered for any other use than what it was intented to be.Every Congressman and/or Senator that votes no on this Bill (no matter how good they have been) should be voted out of office during this next election! Of couse, the name of the game is bury it or put it off until after the elections. There should be NO excuses to bringing this to the floor and getting it passed!
Thomas H. flynn
What ever happened to the term"lock Box"in referance to SS trust funds? we have for years heard that SS IS running out of funds. If we absolutly put in a lock box to be used only for SS and not pork we would be solvent. Congress pass H.R. 219, or find a new job!
Sandra Ankney
Why can't this bill be passed? I believe that if I had been allowed to invest the social security money myself, I would have gotten a better return.
Dennis Duffy
Question: How is the Social Security surplus invested now? I understood that it was invested in US government bonds paying about 4%. Is this not true? 10XP6
Richard Hays
I do not agree to amending this Act, and so allows Social Security or Medicare trust funds to be used to pay for a war (as in in Iraq), nor for hurricanes or other national disasters. As we now know, the White House will simply lie about the need for a war, anyway. It becomes much more difficult to start a war, if taxes would have to be raised to fund it. It is much too easy to start a war with this trust fund to raid for ready cash.
Richard Hazy
Why not just print cash for a war. It's much easier than raising taxes.
Vanessa
Absolutely -- get the lead out and pass this already. I agree that if our govt officials had to live on OUR SS, they would not have put this on the back burner for so long -- I want to know if MY elected officials voted or vetoed this -- Question: whyu is it so difficult for a citizen to get the voting record of these officials?? Isn't this supposed to be a public record?
Bonnie
It is immoral for politicians to take money out of hard working Americans SS trust fund. The raiding of SS by Congress for their pet "special interest" spending projects must be stopped. Stop Congress from spending our SS trust fund and there will be no need to cut benefits or raise taxes!
Tom Slick
TRUST FUND??? Since when is the the SS a Trust fund? Where is the original text to be found for the passage of the Social Security Act? When was the last time an American citizen directed the SS to give an assessment of their taxes? The US people have been conned out of another right, but they don't know how...most probably don't even care, but the ones that do are usually dealt with very harshly. I wonder why the Japanese outright rejected the idea of having the same system in their country???...because they didn't want to be numbered like cattle.
Eva Jean
Social security is for the people of the US who paid into it for their old age! Every person alive who votes should flood their representatives and congressmen with their input. For years now this fund has been raided and it is time for it to stop. I personally feel that members of congress and the representatives should have to live on social security just like everyone else. Why are they so privileged to draw so much more that you and I. Afterall most of them are already wealthy and if they aren't when they go into office they are fixed for life when they retire. Again, I don't believe that they should stay in office until they either drop dead or retire. There should be limits on how long they can serve.
woodie
As usual our Congress has resorted to making choices that are good for their owwn special interests. Each one should hang their collective heads in shame at the way our SS taxe money is being spent.
R. Crowley
The same old game Everyone in Washington plays. Skim money every place you can for your pet projects with no regard for the people who worked all their life to put money into this account. It is truly absurd that suck a bill even needs to be proposed. This is why everyone hates politicians.
