If, as you say, "comments that are off topic are likely to be removed," then why don't you actually remove all the off topic comments on this page? (10/27/06)

Thanks for the query, Judy. We get about 30 comment spams per hour, mostly directed to this page and one other. So we are constantly removing off-topic comments, but when we occassionally stop to eat or breathe, the comment spams build up again. We're working on a technical solution to this problem, hoping to avoid requiring people to register in order to comment.

UPDATE: We have now installed a technology to thwart spam comments. So far it seems to be working.
