This network of emigrant trails across the western half of our country needs eligibility for study. The speed of energy development needs to be matched by the speed of trails research and inclusion....

S. 580 would amend the National Trails System Act to require the Secretary of the Interior to update the feasibility and suitability studies of four national historic trails.

Detailed Summary

(This measure has not been amended since it was introduced. The summary of that version is repeated here.)

Amends the National Trails System Act to direct the Secretary of the Interior to: (1) revise the feasibility and suitability studies for certain existing National Historic Trails for consideration of possible additions to such trails; and (2) study the feasibility and suitability of designating certain routes and cutoffs as components of the Oregon, Pony Express, California, and Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trails and as shared components of the California and Oregon National Historic Trails.

Status of the Legislation

Latest Major Action: 6/26/2007: Placed on Senate Legislative Calendar under General Orders. Calendar No. 225.

Points in Favor

(Log in to edit the wiki and be the first to show why the bill should pass!)

The western historic trails did not exist as a single track to a single destination. Rather, they were an interwoven network of trails from multiple "jumping-off" places to countless destinations, following an endless variety of shortcuts and cutoffs in between. The wonderful history of the western migration can only be properly told when this complex system of trails in presented and understood....

The original congressional designation of emigrant trails as national historic trails designated only what was deemed at the time to be the primary route. The proposed studies will look at many alternate routes that were used by the emigrants. Routes changed year-by-year over the period from 1841 to 1869. An assessment of the condition and relevance of these routes is needsd. Support for the legislation is encouraged....
