well kathi, i must tell you that this issue needs to be addressed in a proper forum only, and unless we accept it as a disease the required platform will be not provided. i work for a drug and alcohol rehab project, and believe me i have seen some cases which you can not even imagine

The concept of alcoholism as a disease vs addiction is NOT a concept widely accepted by all members of the medical field; as a matter of fact, it is still controversial. See www.alcohol-drug-treatment.net/disease_concept.html as just one jumping off point for examining both sides of an argument.
So do label other addictions as disease (smoking, gambling, sex) in order to guiltlessly shed responsibility for our behavior?
I hope everyone reading this (and all opinions for that matter), before accepting statements at face value, will do research on their own and examine both sides of an issue, as well as analyzing the basis of all hypotheses thrown out there. Are we a bunch of sheep or just too lazy to think on our own?...

Perhaps this is a bill designed to help drug companies. However, I take the more optimistic approach and say perhaps this law is the first step toward decriminalizing drug use. Throwing people in jail is not the solution....

This is another form of drug company propaganda, designed to sell more prescriptions and make more billions for Merck, Lilly, etc. Drug abuse can be and is successfully treated without medications. How can a person build a new, drug-free life if they are treated as though they have a chronic, life-long disease? Addiction is NOT a disease of the brain, proven by the presence of programs successfully treating addiction without treatment for brain disease....
