Here is an address for President-elect Obama: http://www.change.gov/page/s/contact,...copy/paste into your browser and when the page opens send him a message and URGE him to follow through on his commitment of support for the repeal of WEP / GPO in 2009. Share the address with those you know affected by this unfair legislation and get them involved... BEFORE the Inauguration....

This is the problem with all Welfare Programs. They are "tweaked" by government "workers" rather than just simplified.

SS retirement pay is WELFARE.

Therefore make all payments equal to the annualized minimum wage.

Means test and reduce payments by $1.00 for every $2.00 of other income from any source whatsoever....

Why not call the Congressional Switchboard at 202/224-3121 and ask for the office of Congressman McNulty. Ask what's happening w/H.R.82. Then say you support the Social Security Fairness Act of 2007 and request that Rep. McNulty move the bill out of committee and on to the House floor for debate. You'll be asked your name and where your from. Then, call the number again and ask for the office of Sen. Kerry. Ask what's happening w/S.206. Then say you support the Social Security Fairness Act of 2007 and request that Sen. Kerry move the bill out of committee and on to the Senate floor for debate. You'll be feeling pretty good by now so call the number again and again asking to be connected to each member of congress for YOUR state and tell them that you support the Social Security Fairness Act of 2007 and you want to know what their position is on H.R 82 or S.206. After a rest, why not report your experience on this forum....

What??? What is currently happening in Missouri now is The SS is going back and saying that some law written way back, states that some teachers should pay ss and some teachers don't have to pay it and it depends on the teaching postion. Coaches, administrators, and vo-tech teachers may now have to start paying according to the old law. But the Windfall/GPO may still apply to them as well, even with them currently returning to paying in ss??? No one seems to know the answer to that one....

As a teacher in Illinois I was required to pay into FICA from some wages earned as a teacher, thus not being allowed to use the wages paid to SS to count toward my teacher annuity. But to add insult to injury, when I collect my SS benefits, the SS benefits are reduced by half because I receive a teacher annuity. My TRS annuity is reduced by $350 per month because I was required to pay into FICA from some teacher wages. My SS benefits are reduced by $250 per month (WEP) because I receieve a state annuity....

Such unfair . My husband paid into SS over 30 years until(early 90,s) Wanted to work and give back his knowledge. He trained OSHA to people needing jobs for STRS for just over 4 years until they stopped that program. (all this time time he could have qualified for disability because of COPD. Yet he worked on at a 1/4 of the pay he had received. Still not wanting to give up he again worked for the State driving a transit bus, for almost 4 years.
Then Cancer hit him. (He could not draw SSD, only state?) We at that time was with OPERS.
Still treated like crap. But after months and obvious to anyone he was dying. They accepted him and our health care was free and enough benifit to make the mortgage payment.
We had started this in January 05 and it was now Sept 05. Then STERS made him take them? Now just to have health care we would have to pay them? No monthly benefit?
Sters is unfair. The whole system is wrong. He died not knowing the mess I have been left with....

In an October 22 letter, Senator Obama expressed his clear support for repeal of the Government Pension Offset and Windfall Elimination Provision. In his letter directed specifically to NEA members, Senator Obama states,
“Nobody should be penalized for serving our children, and that’s why I support repealing the GPO/WEP and will work to do so as President…the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset have a serious detrimental impact on hundreds of thousands of educators and your spouses. That’s why as a Senator I co-sponsored the Social Security Fairness Act, which would repeal these provisions….I believe that we have a responsibility to take care of workers who have devoted their lives to public service and that we shouldn't discourage young people from working in these essential jobs at a time when so many teachers are at or near retirement age and we’re struggling to replace them.”...

The letter also states,

“I will work to repeal GPO and WEP, but I won’t stop there. We need to think now about how we provide retirement security for today’s retirees and workers retiring 20 or 30 or more years down the road. Let me tell you about my comprehensive plan. It starts with protecting Social Security. It is one of the most successful social programs in American history, and we need to preserve and maintain it, without risky privatization plans….Improving retirement security for educators…will be a high priority for me as President.”...
