To all of you that are apposed to slaughter I encourage you to donate at least 100.000.00 dollars per year for the next 25-30 years to your local resucue. I love horses but the fact is how man people are willing to put up that kind of money to help care for them. I currently do volunteer work with a resuce and we have 130 horses that no wants or cares about except for the people who are caring for them our projected budget needs to be $100,000 per year just for feed this is not including medical, dental, farrier services and what ever comes up. I am not a big fan of slaughter but until people QUIT BREADING we are going to have this problem. Last year the statistics were 207,000 horse in this country starved to death yes starved to death in the United States of America. Have you ever seen a hose that could barely stand because of starvation? it is not a pretty sight. STOP BREEDING THE LAND IS COVERED UP THERE IS NO PLACE FOR THEM TO GO...

The horse has earned the respect he should be given. Please Pass the Bills to stop the brutual and inhumane killing of our beautiful, noble, devoted and loving Horses.. Please watch the vidioes filmed at those barbarick slughter houses, than you will realize why this must end. The horse has earned the respect it should be given. The horse carried our men to war and fought with them in many wars, worked the mines, cleared our land, and was our transportation for years. God did not intend these animals to be used as a food source, as the are not cloved footed as the pigs, cows, goats and sheep. Plese pass the bill to protect our wild horses from the fate during roundup which again is done in a manner that is unhumane, then placing them in small pens. The horse is our heritage please protect them for my Grandchildren and their children to see on the ranges of our Great American West States....

Brian,
I cannot believe you’re so blind or hardhearted in your thinking.
There is a big difference between horses opposed to beef, poultry or pork.
Why not just eat your dog when you get tired of feeding it.
As of 9/1/08 82% of the people that voted had compassion for the equine, 18% had no clue. DON'T KILL THE HORSES!!!!!!!...

I'm wouldn't eat horse meat just because it's not something I'm used to but why those other animals and not horses? Is the meat dangerous or something?

Horse slaughter does NOT reduce the number of unwanted horses.

http://www.kaufmanzoning.net/horsemeat/AnimalLawCoalitionRelease061808.... />
Slaughter… is useless as a tool for controlling the unwanted horse population and instead simply creates a … market that competes with potential buyers of … horses and encourages a continuous supply.”

"John Holland, senior analyst for AAHS (Americans Against Horse Slaughter) explained further, “The trends are irrefutable. We found that equine abuse levels are clearly linked to economic conditions but that slaughter trends were antithetical to them for most of the study period. We now see that what drives horse slaughter is the market for horse meat in Europe and Asia. American horses are killed for their meat and not because they are unwanted or abandoned."...

Horse slaughter is all about MONEY continued

"The demand for horsemeat creates a market where horse slaughter “kill buyers” compete with other people who want to buy horses. This encourages owners to supply that market through over-breeding horses, for example.” The study’s findings confirmed an earlier Italian study of horse meat consumption from 1995-2001."

These results prove that MONEY drives horse slaughter NOT the number of unwanted horses.

For all of you that support this bill I would like to thank you. For all of you that don’t support it I want to thank you also. The basis of my opinion is that even if the animal was breed and raised for human consumption, it is completely the same as slaughtering a horse. You may not spend that much time with a cow, a chicken, or a lamb but you still took on the responsibility to raise it and take care of it. For the ones that do not eat horsemeat you do not have much to say because some of you eat other meat. For you to cut down the ones that do eat horsemeat, that is as wrong. Did you know that back in 1874 our ancestors killed poor defenseless horse’s on the basis that it gave the Native Americans more mobility? Yes we are Americans that should be better than this but we’re not so why B**** at everyone that doesn’t support your view when we all have freedom of speech?...
