The iddea is great but it is incomplete. I have a job that punishes you anyway. Prove why they fired you. Even better if they want you to quit they starve you. No raise because you took time off to help youre community....

this bill should become law for the right of the volunteers that would give their lives to save someones house or life, but feel that they might get a point (attendance policy 8 points and your terminated)from there employer and possible loose their job do they (volunteers) have to turn away from either a burning house or a medical call because they fear loosing their job?the company that I work for ConAgra foods feels that you should be at work. They feel that it is more important to run there machines than to serve the community I feel someones live is more important that 1 day or part of a day missed. I would hate to tell someone that there house cannot be saved because I have to get to work on time. Please ask your representitive to get this bill passed. Thanks...

H.R. 1643 would prohibit termination of employment of volunteers firefighters and emergency medical personnel responding to emergencies.

Detailed Summary

Volunteer Firefighter and EMS Personnel Job Protection Act - Prohibits any employee from being terminated, demoted, or discriminated against in the terms or conditions of employment because the employee is absent or late as a result of serving as a volunteer firefighter or providing volunteer emergency medical services as part of a response to an emergency or major disaster. Excludes absences for which the employee: (1) is absent for more than 14 days per calendar year; (2) responds to an emergency or major disaster without being official deployed in accordance with a coordinator national deployment system; or (3) fails to provide written verification within a reasonable period of time.

Allows employers to: (1) reduce the employee's regular pay for such time as the employee is absent; and (2) require the employee to provide written verification from the supervising Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), state, or local official that such employee responded in an official capacity at a specified time and date.

Requires such an employee to make a reasonable effort to notify his or her employer that he or she may be absent or late.

Gives such an employee a private cause of action for discrimination which violates this Act.

Latest Major Action: 6/27/2007: Referred to House subcommittee. Status: Referred to the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions.
