Summary

Funding would be used for the sixth round of transportation improvements at the former McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento County, California. When the Air Force left McClellan in 2001, the result was the loss of approximately 11,600 direct jobs on the base, along with an estimated $1.5 billion contribution to the regional economy. A complete and successful conversion of the former base cannot be secured without a strong partnership with the Federal Government. The activity of this project will be to provide essential road and infrastructure improvements throughout McClellan, specifically to rebuild over 4,000 feet of substandard roads with curb, gutters, sidewalks, and streetlights. The project will also provide needed storm drainage improvements, and will help make it easier for employees and truck traffic to enter McClellan to access its growing short-line freight rail service.

According to the recipient, the project is a valuable use of taxpayer funds because it would help the former McClellan Air Force Base recover from the loss of a permanent military installation there. When the U.S. Air Force left McClellan in 2001, it resulted in the loss of approximately 11,600 direct jobs on the base, and an estimated $1.5 billion per year lost to the regional economy.
