July 31, 2008, 3:34pm (report abuse)Keep in mind, this money isn't to bring in things like Dragon fruit, it's to keep out bad stuff like the zebra clam, kudzu, the African 'killer bee', etc. Every year the US loses, literally, billions of dollars in lost crops, clean-up costs, damaged property, etc. to invasive species. Just last year the papers were up in a roar about snake-head fish which were imported and illegally dumped. Programs like APHIS serve not to tell you what you can bring, but what you can't. APHIS alone probably doesn't save people $800/yr but it certainly saves more money (mostly by reduced food prices) than it costs. An ounce of prevention...

October 22, 2008, 6:35pm (report abuse)A very important piece of legistlation. While there are a few pieces of pork involved, all in all a good bill that needs to be passed immediately. Our rural communities are the back bone of our country, and keeping these rural areas going is important to our economy.

December 29, 2008, 12:56pm (report abuse)Its getting a little boring to hear everyone say these bills need to be passed "immediately". If these things are "so important" they should maybe have more thought. The FDA has done a poor job of protecting us and we may be better off just eliminating it rather than re-funding it. If Gov. would leave the money in the rural communities, they would be better able to utilize the money than to pass it through congress. We need less gov and less control, not more.

December 30, 2008, 8:23am (report abuse)Check out John Stossel's account of how the gov is destroying rural areas, because of subsidies etc. Besides, as a hard working nurse, why am I not able to keep the fruits of my labor? Less government is better.
