Although I am no fan of Senator Clinton, I think this is a good piece of legislation. Those of us that served during the "Cold War" should receive special recognition for that service. This should have gone through years ago except for the stubborness of personnel at DoD.
Cold War F111 Crew Chief
I'm NOT a Hillary fan either, but I do thank her for putting forth this legislation.
We have waited far too long for this recognition.
Very Cold Warrior
It is about time military members get a medal for a war that the USA actually won, versus two (three if you count Korea) for campaigns that the USA is still involved in.
hastiin7
Many Americans (Cold War vets) stood viligant watches at Fuda Gap, REFORGER exercises, stood underway watches onbroad SSN's, SSBN's, stood USMC Embassy security in USSR, flown USAF cargo planes, SAC alert watches, viligant ICBM silo duties, it's about time! Thanks Sen. Clinton
Allen Burk
For the most significant victory the United States has had since WWII, it seems a service medal is justified. This victory transformed our world. The people who kept us safe deserve recognition.
Joe
we have waited long enough
USMC 1974
It seems they give out medals for almost anything today. This was a major victory, there should be more than one medal in my opinion. S/F
USNR 1961-1963
It time that Cold War Vet were recognized
Solomon89
Let's see if this incarnation survives the byzantine process of approval or dies a grisly sacrificial death on the alter of bureacracy.
US Army 1985-1997
It is long past time to honor those who served
Navy Vet
Can desire for a medal be bought so cheaply? It would take a truly blind Cold War vet to not see a blatant attempt by an avowed enemy of the military to pander to a voting bloc which has been openly betrayed and derided by the Democrats for so long that now the attitude toward any action taken by any Democrat, and Hillary "I'll tax the pennies on your eyes" Clinton, in particular, varies from deep suspicion to undisguised ridicule and contempt.
We who have been in the belly of the beast understand how and why things like this are done. If this bill passes, I wonder if there will be a carbon credit tax for the energy used to cast them, or maybe they'll be made in China. Considering the author of the bill and her motivation for introducing it, at very least, those of us who accept the medal will accept a bit of shame with it.
Navy air force
Rather than play politics with this, let's just recognize that it is a good thing and overdue.Rummy sought to cheapen the victory by issuing a "Certificate". I could wallpaper my room with certificates, but am prouder of all the military medals received.BTW, it ain't a dun-deal yet. encourage all of your friends and relatives to contact their Senators and get this out of committee
USAF VET
I APPRECIATE NAVY VETS COMMENTS. IF ANY VET VOTES FOR HILLARY SIMPLY BECAUSE SHE INTRODUCED THIS BILL AND GOT THEM A MEDAL THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES.
IN MY OPINION THERE IS NO DISGRACE IN RECEIVING THIS MEDAL (IF APPROVED) SIMPLY BECAUSE OF THE ORIGINATOR OF THE BILL. REMEMBER, IT IS THE ENTIRE CONGRESS THAT SAYS YES OR NO.
I WILL ACCEPT THE MEDAL AND DISPLAY IT PROUDLY BECAUSE I EARNED IT, AND EVERY TIME I LOOK AT IT I WILL THINK TO MYSELF "NICE TRY HILLARY BUT YOU STILL DIDN'T GET MY VOTE."
Coldest Cold Warrior
Army, 9th Infantry Reg., Alaska 61-63. There are few things more pathetic than someone entirely consumed by mindless hate. It's clear there's absolutely nothing Senator Clinton could do - EVER - that Navy Vet would respect, no truth she could possibly tell that he wouldn't condemn as a lie, no act of kindness, respect, or justice she could perform for which he would EVER have the Christian decency to say thank you. He'd far rather pollute all this with his hatred - and ruin it for everyone else. Whata guy!
Marine Vet
I am shocked to see 64% for to 36% against. Anyone whom is against this (Fine) but they should never wear any BS ribbons like overseas service, DI, Artic service and a long list of others, ECT. ECT.
strobelvets
These Men deserve recognition for their personal sacrifices...and their committment to this Countries defense...during very uncertain times...when the very real possibility of a WAR loomed large on numerous occasions...and had dire global ramifications...
All were very aware that a "violnet" direct confrontation between the Soviet Union, it's Allies...or ours...could easily have ended, life as we know it, on this planet...
It is sometimes more difficult to resist the impulse to react...than to react...
These dedicated Men deserve more than a Medal...for We owe them our lives...and the lives of our Children and Grandchildren.
If they desire this small token of appreciation from a grateful Nation...let it be so...
The dedicated Men who died, unsung, in this Global conflict...have already paid the price of the minting...and more...
Navy Corpsman Vet '69-'73
Well said, Coldest Cold Warrior!
It's past time to recognize Cold War veterans. I will cherish this medal.
I hope you will, also...Navy vet, if you can get over your cynicism and hatred.

This Medal is long overdue. I'm no fan of Hillary, and this Bill will not gain her my vote, but she is doing the right thing for Cold War veterans.
Anyone interested in helping get this Medal approved should go to:

and out what you can do to help.
Navy Vet - 38yrs ACDU
Personally, and with due respect to those who differ, I wouldn't wear such a medal. Before I retired, I only wore the 3 most senior medals anyway.
I've met Admirals of the Royal Navy who were wearing only 2 or 3 ribbons. I would be embarassed to show up at an international function overseas wearing a dozen ribbons that I received for just being in some place at a particular time (the National Defense Service Medal comes to mind).
DMZ Vet
This medal is long overdue. There is no difference between towing the line on the DMZ and towing the line in the Fulda Gap. Winning the Cold War was huge. Cold War vets should be rewarded for playing it smart, taking risks and beating the USSR hands down.
ASW Sub Hunter
I've spent years at sea finding, tracking, and ousting Soviet subs off the US and Canadian coast during the Cold War. I got my reward by way of a "well done," from my chief. That was good enough for me, because those didn't come along too often. That is just my opionion. Thank you.
ARMY GRUNT 84-87
Cold War vets should receive this medal, they are just like any other war vet who has stood a post on the national wall of defense for this great nation. This is way too long overdue, but now we can make it happen.
Kevin
Please ensure the men of the USS Thresher and USS Scorpion receive this medal posthumously.
NavyVet 77-84
While I appreciate Sen. Clinton's effort, I think that all past, present, and future service members should receive the Narional Defense Service Medal regardless of the dates served. As a peace-time vet, I think we all deserve it.
GI 78-90
The medal was designed long ago, but Rumsfeld said the certificate was enough. Nice to finally be recognized (if it passes), especially since the VA encourages us to still wear our medals on Veteran's Day!
Super Squid '78-'84
The medal was earned - nuff' said !
USAFSS Airman
The Cold War is a misnomer, as over 200 servicemen lost their lives during that period,
many to hostile fire. This medal would offer some recognition to those who served and sacrificed, including my comrades aboard C-130 60528, shot down by MiGs on 2 September 1958 over Soviet Armenia.
USAFSS Airman
According to Cold War Clashes: Confronting Communism, 1945-1991, Richard K. Kolb, Ed.,a publication of the VFW, 382 known Americans were killed by hostile action in the Cold War.
jim811
A Cold War Medal for those served is long overdue. Please honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Please honor those who stood their posts, never waivered in their duty and won freedom.
John Weaver
Well, if the DOD and Congress stall long enough, all of the Cold War Veterans will have died and then they won't have to issue them a medal. For many Cold War Veterans, this will be the only medal that their time in service may have earned them. These men and women served honorably and went willing where the Armed Services of the United States of America sent them. They left families at home, spent long hours in the field, stand post in the cold and heat, enduring bugs and the weather, they bleed and some died. They didn't receive medals, they didn't receive thank yous they just did their jobs and went home. Now it is time for Congress and DOD to finally do theirs.

I can be found at American Cold War Veterans as well my feelins and where I stand supporting this medal,to honor those whom gave all has been the task of all veterans as well faithful service to the nation from the public, bring this into the public forum I sure the support shall be there, the House said yes now shall the Senate agree?
Please vote yes and give Honors to those as they are overdue.

My father is a Korean War veteran and I hope it gets passed, so he can be recognized, along with the others, who so deserve this.
70's Navy Vet
I have always supported this medal and could care less who proposed it. I wouldn't have any problem at all thanking Hilary if this passes. I still won't vote for her. One has nothing to do with the other. My father was also a Korean Veteran. I'd love to share the same medal with him.
American Veteran
This world would be a very different one had these veterans not defended their country at a time when we were directly threatened. How many millions owe their freedom today to these veterans?
Army Tanker
With all due respect to Navy Vet’s comment “I've met Admirals of the Royal Navy who were wearing only 2 or 3 ribbons.” --- Oh my goodness, British Admirals, are you joking? I am also a Cold War Vet (and still serving) and if we start comparing ourselves to foreign militaries then we are lost. If you do not want to wear it, don’t. If you want to get rid of the NDSM then start a movement. If you chose to try to get rid of the Army Service Ribbon as well please include me as a supporter but I think we deserve the Cold War Victory Medal and I will proudly wear it.
70's Navy Vet
The question is, if this medal is approved, will the American Legion and the VFW follow suit and make this a qualifying medal to join?
USAR 1973-83
Thank you to the Senate members who are supporting this bill. The House is in favor. It is about time something was done to honor all the men & women who served during the Cold War.

It is time for this medal to be issued,It has been earned. Thank You Hillary Clinton, and All others whom are in support there of.

This tangible recognition for the Cold War Era veterans is long overdue. Never Gve Up!

I think that the medal should be approved and awarded. I saw action in the Philippines and we did not get combat recognition. The marines are very particular about who gets medals and who does not. It is really a very sad situation.
I salute all veterans and the service they provided to this great nation.

Hillary Clinton may make history in 2008 as the first woman president, the first spouse of a former president, and the first spouse of a former president who was impeached to be elected president of the United States. She would also be another link in the chain of Bush or Clinton members who have been either President or Vice President which has been unbroken since 1980. That being said, her support of the Cold War Veteran's medal is one way to right history in acknowledging the reality that the veterans did their part in defense of this nation. It is one small step for mankind in taking responsibility for the care and historical crediting of those who served while those who didn't benefited from that service.
Fulda Gap Vet 73-79
I agree with many of the sentiments expressed regarding Senator Clinton and her suspected motivation in proposing this bill. I guess I view the whole process as an effort by her to gain some needed credibility with veterans and veterans groups in her run for higher office. I suppose she has earned our lack of trust based on her previous comtempt of the military and veterans. But who cares. If the medal is approved, I too would cherish the medal and wear it proudly. I feel we deserve some recognition for the 39 month tour of duty many of us did in harms way. If it offends your sense of "honor" by acccepting a medal from Senator Clinton's efforts on your behalf, don't accept it. I will accept it, if approved, in honor of the men and women who served with me. They deserve this medal. There is no shame in that.
USAF MSgt 04-66 to 05-88
I find that the so called supporters in leadership positions (military and federal government)will say that they support the Cold War Victory Medal and then do nothing to get authorized.
LTC, ARMY RET, 1957-2000
THIS IS LONG OVERDUE.BELIEVE IT OR NOT, ALL OF US PAID A VERY HIGH PRICE FOR THIS VICTORY. RECOGNITION IS THE VERY LEAST THAT SHOULD BE DONE FOR THE DEFEAT OF COMMUNISM.
USARNG SSG 84-03
As a vet, I strongly support and urge others to support authorizing a Cold War Service/Victory Medal. Half of America has already forgotten that we lived on the edge of a nuclear conflagration for 50 years and that the United States led the free world in opposing the Evil Empire, the Soviet Union's goal of world hegemony. If not for our service, the entire world would be enslaved under a Soviet nightmare. Because of our service, the Soviet Union does not exist any more. A medal honoring the veterans of America's longest war is long overdue.
Army Tanker 86 to 90
We had a dream and that dream was that the wall would come down and the Communist Block would crumble and freedom would prevail. Even during times of so called peace during the 70's and 80's we lost more troops per month from line of duty deaths than we are currently loosing today (during OIF and OEF) "toeing the line" in places like FULDA, the ROK, in the sea and air and other distant outpost that the general public knew nothing about. We won the most significant armed conflict since WWII and DOD can't even award its own with a simple medal. This is simply WRONG.
Old TAC Man
I spent a large part of my adult life in the USAF, being sent all over the world, often w/ little to no advanced warning. All in the name of stopping Communism. I know many that have nothing to show for their service except memories. Everyone who served honorably during the Cold War should be recognized for their service with the Cold War Service Medal.
e3mrk
It's bad enough explaining My Fire Watch Medal let alone having another one given for nothing else than being in the Military from such and such a date. You want to take pride in something?
Just look at the Uniform You wore That should be more than enough.

I feel that this medal will be a welcome form of recognition for our Victory in the largest conflict in US history. YES for the medal!

This medal is long overdue. It's a shame that those who have not served have control over this.

Ken
I agree with Senator Gramm's thoughts:
It was a unique period in our history, and deserves a unique medal. Senator Phil Gramm (R-TX) called it the most significant victory since World War II.
From the poor way we teach historical events many young people don't know about the Cold War. They don't know that there are 382 known fatal U.S. combat casualties of the Cold War. There are 343 MIA's from the Cold War.
There are many more men missing in action from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. The Cold War encompasses the Berlin Airlift, the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis & the Vietnam War, and the Reagan Military buildup.
What is even more important is the fact that the U.S.A. won the Cold War without having a massive full scale war resulting in the loss of millions of lives. Resolving such a huge conflict is monumental. It saved not only our lives but our way of life.

We shouldn't have to justify why this medal should be approved, Donald Henry Rumsfeld already did it when he said it was a war and we won it! To all that served and continue to do so I salute you!!

It's about time! I was in Ch-47 Chinook helicopters from 76-82 and returned on REFORGER in 78 with the 101ST Airborne, the first return since WWII. I also did my time with the 210TH AVN Battalion in the Republic of Panama, so why not a Cold War medal. This all helped in bring down and stopping the cold war.
USAEUR 1958-1960
The bill status is awaiting conference committee for the house and senate. Cost 30 million dollars, Bush will shoot it down for that. I wonder if the snooty American Legion will offer membership to us if it passes. They should, most of their members never left the US.

30 MIL, hell all they have to do is say it is authorized for wear and I'd buy my own.
2 hot wars
This medal is nonsense. It makes a mockery of real medals. All but a bare few who will wear this did little more dangerous than face the potential of war. Soldiers should not want a medal for just doing what is a matter of course, what is the normal job. We don't get decorated for doing our job, but for doing something extraordinary, such as serving in a military campaign involving combat, not merely the monthly alert. Sorry, but serving on the Fulda Gap may have been a little scary at times, but it was your job, you likely were a volunteer, and it did not merit any more than the Overseas Medal or the achievement medal you got. If a handful got shot at on the DMZ, that is no reason to give hundreds of thousands a medal.
This is pandering to the ego of veterans and by the look of the comments is reaping a mighty harvest . . .

I SERVED 3 TOURS IN VIETNAM, DURING THE COLD WAR. ITS TIME ALL OTHER VETERANS THAT SERVED DURING THE COLD WAR WHO ALSO PAID THERE DUES ARE HONORED WITH A COLD WAR FOREIGN SERVICE MEDAL, AMERICAS LONGEST WAR,I THANK ALL VETERANS THAT SERVED OUR GREAT COUNTRY.

FOR 2 HOT WARS- AN OVERSEAS MEDAL, AND ACHIEVEMENT MEDAL, DID NOT EXIST IN THE 50'S, 60'S, 70'S, AND EARLY 80'S ALONG WITH OTHERS THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE FOR BEING THERE, OR DOING YOUR "JOB". THE RECOGNITION THAT YOU MAY HAVE RCVD- ALLUDED MOST BACK THEN BECAUSE IT WASN'T AVAILABLE. YOUR REMARKS WERE WELL WRITTEN, BUT I WAS STRUCK BY THE ARROGANCE AND SELF RIGHTEOUSNESS. MANY SERVED THEIR 2 OR 3 YRS AND GOT NO MORE THAN THEIR NDSM OR GCM. LIGHTEN UP!

Overseas Medal ? Medals ?
I have recived none also I wish to point out many of your era recived medals whom were in conus durring WWII.Korea and Viet-Nam Ect. whom have never faced combat while some of the Cold War Era did and died while not being in a declared war!
So seems the choice is recall all the awards and rewrite how awards are earned or take a real look over all and give us our due?
Glen
Justanothervet
The US was anti-medal because it was too European and didn't issue any until 1861 (Washington issued 3 in the revolution) with the medal of honor, then in 1900 they issued the civil war, indian war and spanish-american war medals. There is a difference between medals and ribbon only awards. "I don't want it" is not a reason for someone else to get it. It shows what you did on active duty just like others do. Most will have to apply for it just like the certificate. It is not a perfect world, if a cold war medal is 80% right that's twice as good as people think President Bush is doing. Ego-stroking is not unwarrented -- few served compared to the many defended!
Fall of Saigon Marine
(Pandering to ego of veterans?) I believe the person who wrote that is a not a veteran and dont have a clue what it is like to defend the freedom of speach for someone that hates the person doing the defending.

DMZ Vet
Hey "2 Hot Wars" - you have obviously never been on the DMZ in Korea or else you wouldn't make your uneducated comments. 1 million mines, 7 million NKPA, nerve agent to the loweset weapon system and an average of 20 KIA per year since 1954 (read the language in PL that authorized the KDSM - 1,200 dead since 1954 defending the DMZ). You are probably one of those "Green Zone" or "Saigon" vets that talks big but never pulled a trigger.
2 hot wars
If you got an NDSM, you got recognized. Perhaps eligibility for the NDSM should open up to the entire cold war period. (Who here thinks we won't be in another "cold" war with someone as soon as the current GWOT is finished up? Did British soldiers get a medal for being ready to fight the French in 1700 or 1800 or 1900?)
When I referred to the few who did get shot at, I was referring to those on the DMZ and those who faced similar risks. Out of the hundreds of thousands and millions who served in the cold war (and served honorably and well), they are a relative few. And as you yourself recognize, DMZ Vet, you have the KDSM.
I am sorry the achievement medals and Overseas Medal were not invented in the seventies (when I entered combat-arms service). Given the existence of other medals such as the NDSM and KDSM, that fact simply does not justify this medal.
2 hot wars
Regarding this arrogance about who pulled a trigger and who didn't, you are essentially saying that one veteran's service is more worthy than another's -- that there are different classes of veteran.
There are a lot of men and women out there who served their nation well driving a truck, cooking your chow, or ensuring your orders were filled out and processed correctly.
And some of them are buried in Arlington.
CARY - BIG RED ONE
thanks to all cold war veterans that served during americas longest war, a cold war medal is long over-due.
terry '66-'69/ '72-'94
FOR 2 HOT WARS- "YOU" ARE THE "MACHO" IMPLYING THAT YOUR "2 HOT WARS" IS JUSTIFYED IN ALL THE AWARDS AND ARE "MORE WORTHY". IF YOU EARNED ANY AT ALL- GOOD ON YOU. YOU ARE HELD IN HIGH REVERE. FOR THE OTHER COLD WAR VETS- THEY HAD THEIR LIVES INTERRUPTED ALSO, EITHER THRU THE DRAFT OR ENLISTMENT, AND SERVED OUR COUNTRY FAITHFULLY OFTEN TIMES UNDER HARSH CONDITIONS. THEIR SERVICE WAS IMPORTANT IN MEETING COMMITMENTS WORLD WIDE, THUS PREVENTING WW3. AS KIDS IN THE 50'S, WE HID UNDER DESKS AT SCHOOL DURING BOMB DRILLS. PEOPLE WERE BUILDING FALL OUT SHELTERS AND STOCKING THEM. MANY IN THE WEST DIED OR SUSTAINED CANCERS FROM ABOVE GROUND TESTING FALLOUT. IT WAS SERIOUS! THE VETS DESERVE TO BE RECOGNIZED WITH THIS AWARD. LET THESE GUYS AND THEIR DESCENDANTS HAVE THIS HONOR. DON'T PUT THAT DOWN- YOUR CRITICISM SLANDERS THEM!

Yes indeed, the Cold War "Victory" Medal is overdue. Notice I emphasized "Victory"? It is not just a service medal, but is meant to recognize the victory over the Soviet union and their "world domination" philosophy. Like Hooks Forever said- I would buy my own.

It is way over due. Lives were lost and people have disabilities because of the crazy things we had to do at times. I think most Americans are still not aware of the truly heroic efforts of some people during that time.

this is a joke, right? if not, will this medal qualify me for vfw membership? the local post has great prime rib.

About as meaningless as when they give to twits in boot camp "Defense Service" just because something is going on somewhere else.
Like I need a "thanks for showing up" ribbon. Geez. If there was a "faced the Red Menace with notable risk present" that would be better.

Please pass this bill. These veterans served their country when their country called them to defend it. They are long past due this recognition
UnbridledFury
I really don't think this is so much about ego as much as it is a tangible recognition that there was a Cold War and there was many that stood in defense of our great nation. Even today, the Cold War is just a footnote in the classroom. This medal needs to be passed and hopefully some more education on what that era was all about. The Cold War affected everyone - from those in the military to school children in the classroom. Remember the drill we had to do if "the bomb" went off? Anyone remember Civil Defense or fallout shelters? The Cold War was a huge part of our lives.
24th ID
Yes, a medal is long overdue!!! The Cold War Certificate is worthless, it is not noted on any DD 214, can't get any promotion points for it any enlisted/NCO promotion board, a civilian federal employee without military service can get one. The NDSM has gaps in eligibility, especially from 1974-1991....no veteran in this period was eligible for a NDSM. Just think if the Cold War was still going on, the Middle East situation would be worst than it is now!!!!! People forget or don't remember the 1962 Cuban Crisis.....we may have been minutes away from the start of the end of the world.
Hawaii
Yes, I agree Cold War Veterans deserve a medal....the Dept of Defense exagerates on the cost, just authorize the medal, I'm sure veterans would be willing to pay out of their pocket for it. Politicians and Gov't leaders have stated publically the United States "WON" the Cold War....Talk is cheap...give veterans and elgible servicmembers a proper recognition.
Hawaii 5-0
A medal is deserving for Cold War veterans...whether it is a Cold War Service Medal or Cold War Victory Medal. I pass by Pearl Harbor everday on my way to/from work, and thank God from time to time that we never had a nuclear Pearl Harbor. Thank you Cold War veterans and servicemembers, active, reservists, Guard, who served overseas or stateside from 1945 thru 1991.....the Cold War Era.
BILL NAVYVET
THIS MEDAL IS LONG OVERDUE,THANKS TO ALL VETERANS FOR SERVING THE U.S.
WhatsUP
The Cold War Ended in December, 1991.......now almost 16 years later, NO MEDAL yet!!!?????. Congress get your act together and pass a provision for a medal in the final version of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act NOW!
NikeHerc1
To Nike Herc Chief and Past Nike Vet,
It sure felt like a War to me, we had "Special Warheads" pulled hot battery every month and if another Battery went down we would pull there hot week. Remember the Training videos of the German Terrorist Groups that wanted to do harm to American Military Installation? 24 hour duty every 3rd or 4th day. My favorite part was all the ORE's we had and how I would get to do a simulated emergency destruct. We deserve and earned a Cold War Medal.
VIETNAM VET
LETS NOT DENY VETS OF COLD WAR OVERSEAS SERVICE THEIR RIGHTFUL PLACE AMONG OUR RANKS, ITS TIME TO DO AWAY WITH MY WAR WAS ****** THAN YOURS THINKING, THANKS TO ALL VETS THAT SERVED.

We persevered and overcame...as best we could...then...the TRIAD held...despite continually increased resistance...in the "visible" wars...my father and friends...endured Korea, VietNam and other wars "plotted by the quartermaster...detected on Sonar".
And let no one forget...those bustin their hump, supplyin support, that others might make it...out there...
Difficult times...with the Enemies pressin from all vantage points..yet we prevailed...because We kept our eyes on the ball...
DUANE 81-87
A victory medal for the cold war is long overdue, from my research a victory medal wouldn't cheapen any other award.also many of us would like to get the meal for our deceased relatives who served as well.
DUANE 81-87
What i meant was getting a medal, not meal on behalf of our deceased who served.
Berlin 1990-1992
Having served in Berlin as a young private when the Soviet Union collapsed, I saw first hand what the end of the Cold War meant not only to Americans but Europeans as well. I hope this is authorized. It detracts from nothing. It recognizes the primary mission that millions of Americans in uniform, including my dad, supported for almost 5 decades. This would also likely expand eligibility for many deserving Americans in veterans' organizations that need new members to keep their message of patriotism and veteran advocacy alive and as effective as possible.

CALLING ALL COLD WAR VETERANS!!!!!
A Cold War Medal is being considered by a joint conference committee in Congress on the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Bill. The House had a measure for a medal in the House's version, the Senate did not.
Please contact memebers of the Senate Armed Service Committee NOW via e-mail, fax or phone call to keep the medal in the final bill.
Letters are too late they are meeting NOW. The Senate members have killed the medal measure for the last 3 years. The medal is long overdue!!!!!!!!!!!
The Voice
Yes, K,YEN, I have contacted my Senator who is on the Senate Armed Services Committee and I hope he is on the joint conference committee for the FY 08 National Defense Authorization Act to work out the differences between the House and Senate Version.
I told him (not asked)....he works for me!....via fax....to keep the Cold War Victory Medal in the final Act. The Cold War ended almost 16 years ago......long long overdue!
USN Submariner
I have contacted my Senator too. My fellow submariner veterans as well as all Cold War veterans deserve this medal. I have been involved in to many patrols against Soviet subs which the public will never know about.

I spent 3 years on the eastern atlanitc radar line aboard a Picket shiP working for NORAD,Plus being sent to the blockade of Cuba It was a very scary time.. I would Honar the Medal

FOR THOSE IN OPPOSITION OF THIS BILL PERHAPS THEY CAN SHARE THIER OPINION WITH THE FAMILY OF THE GUY WHO'S BRAIN MATTER I HAD TO CLEAN OFF OF AN AM106 RADIO BECAUSE THE JEEP THAT HE AND ANOTHER WERE KILLED IN ROLLED OVER ON THE AUTO BAHN. OR THE MOTHER OF THE KID WHO WOULD HAVE BURNED TO DEATH WHEN HIS TANK CAUGHT FIRE WHILE RESPONDING TO A TROUBLE CALL ON THE BORDER. MERCIFULLY THE SABOT ROUND THAT EXPLODED ENDED HIS SUFFERING...YEAH..JUST 2 OF MANY DAYS OF MY UNIMPORTANT, MUNDANE, JUST ANOTHER JOB, TOURS OF DUTY..'NUFF SAID.

ITS ABOUT TIME THANKS TO HILLARY CLINTON FOR THIS START TO LEGISLATION. MANY SOLIDERS LIKE US IN THE 82D WERE THROWN INTO SEVERAL PLACES DURING SO CALLED "training missions", AND OTHER REASONS TO BE AT A PLACE THAT WAS TO SAY A LITTLE BIT HOSTILE,LET ALONE ALL THE TIME WE SPENT ON STAND-BY AS PART OF RDF READY TO GO ON PRESIDENTS WHIM. THERE ARE ALOT OF MEN AND WOMEN WHO DESERVE RECOGNITION FOR DUTY PERFORMED HONORABLEY DURING DATES BEING SET FOR ISSUE OF THE MEDAL, MEANING WELL DESERVED BENIFITS ALSO.
DAVID82ABN
SO I THINK THE MEDAL IS NOT "NONSENCE", JUDGE 2HOTWARS, RELAX, THEY/WE WERE ALL DOING MORE THAN "JUST A JOB".

This medal is long over due to cold war vets. we where on duty just like every other vet out there. I was just off coast of Iran for months war could have broke out anytime.Give us are do.

Service and Campaign Medals tell a story about when you were where/when. I received my first decoration after I had been in for seven years. For those who were in when I was, and got out without ever having received a decoration, this medal will properly recognize them for their service. Can't be any worse than the GWOTSM!!!
Carl --21st Replacement Battalion 71-73
Cold War veterans were sent by the government to protect and defend. We served with vigilance and honor. I would be proud to wear this medal. I am proud to have been a soldier of this great country.
bblhd_716
This is well deserved. My time on board the submarine was spent in places that most Americans cannot begin to comprehend. We gathered intelligence by the volumes in order to prepare our defenses.
I currently hold 2 Navy Expeditionary Medals that I hold dear, but they don't tell a story of winning like this medal would.

I was a Suez Crisis 'Tincan' sailor (Med Sea '55 - '58). Hard to imagine all that service time and effort and no recognition by the country so many of us served so faithfully.

If the present Congress thinks the medal will "cost too much" then pass the Bill approving a Ribbon now and a Medal when a new Congress agrees the Nation can afford it. Otherwise, this effort may well fade away as other actions designed to appeal to a voting bloc prior to an election.

Everywhere I went in the twenty years of the Cold War I met US Serviceman. There were without exception always courteous, humourous and exteremely professional with highest standards. You guys deserve this.
Good bless America.

A very good idea. I was one of those in the early 70's providing security for a USAF air base, waiting for the Russians to come through the Fulda gap. A famous British gentelemen whose name I can't recall said "They also serve who only stand and wait."

Once again DOD prevailed, no medal. It's like we never existed. Happy holidays to all my brothers from the past.

This medal is long overdue. The Cold War was our Nation's longest conflict with many causalities to hostile fire. The fact that we WON this war is worthy of a Victory Medal, as done for WW2.

Yes, S.1097 was stood down.
The good news is, S.1763 is still alive and lives on through next year!

OK- WHAT'S THE LATEST STATUS TO GET US A COLD WAR MEDAL? WE DESERVE IT. HAVE OUR WONDERFUL ELECTED OFFICIALS DROPPED THE BALL AGAIN? WE SERVED WITH HONOR, PAY TAXES, AND WATCH WITH HORROR AS OUR REPRESENTATIVES IN WASHINGTON DC PLAY GAMES AND GET NOTHING DONE! NOT COOL!

My father was a Marine, I was a Sailor, my daughter was a soldier, and now my son is a Marine. I am proud of each and every one of them. My daughter was never in Iraq or Afganistan, but has a Global War on Terrorism medal. This is no different. Congress needs to get with it and approve this medal.

I served at Ayers Kasern from October, 1958 until May, 1960.Including WINTERSHIELD. I responded to my share of alerts, ate my share of WWII surplus c-rations and slept under more snow in a sleeping bag, than I want to remember.
I was in the 46th ARB CCA 3rd Armored Div.
I think a certificate would be nice, I have one on my office wall signed by MG Frederic Brown Div. Commander that I am very proud of.

It is regretable it took Hillary to introduce such a bill. I doubt she has ever done anything that wasn't politically motivated. That being said, I think such an official award is entirely appropriate. It is already a fact that military members and some federal civilian employees are eligible for a "Cold War" certificate. They are easy to obtain and all you need do is apply. As to an official medal, if you don't approve and don't care to receive one, just don't apply. As to cost, if that is the big hangup,I would be willing to pay for the medal ($20 or so?). Such should not be necessary, but it beats no issuance of the medal. Yes, there is a difference in vets who experienced hostile action and those who did not. Simple logic dictates such. However, those who never saw combat and served honorably are just as worthy to receive this award.

In reply to your comment about Hillary, what politician has done anything that wasn't politically motivated. That being said, Kudos to Hillary. At least she had the balls to intoduce the bill.

It is Sad that the people who served during this period, I am one of those people, I don't ask why , When my counrty calls or expect, or do my missions for medals, but it is nice to look down on my chest and know I was reconized for my Patriotism to my country.
Served in Korea,Cuba, Iraq, Kosovo, and I am proud of the soldier's before me and we need to look out for the soldier's ahead of us,And if all it takes is a piece of cloth and metal to keep America who it is!! then ,, Please Approve this medal.

One of my employee's in N. Little Rock lost her young son (last name schaeffer)in the submarime that was lost somewhere near Russia in 1968...All those guys certainly earned a medal.

Personally, I always felt there are WAY too many medals GIVEN out. Vietnam was one of the most medal happy CONFLICTS ever. Iraq and todays military even beats that. Heck, EVERYONE is getting a CAB today, just for showing up. But the cold war medal, in my opinion, is a most deserving medal. It should have been AWARDED to those that DESERVE it LONG AGO! I, personally, would rather have it than all of the others given to me. It was a TRUE VICTORY! The only war America has won since WWII, in my humble opinion.
Praying Mantis 88
If they're balking at paying for the d--n things, I'll definitely pay for mine and 10 others. I would hate to think that a chunk of brass I wanted to brighten up my memories caused a single GWOT vet not to get the medical care he/she needed.

To all of you that don't think we should have this medal;don't accept it...But as for myself and the others I served with Patrolling the border in THE FULDA GAP & south of there not to forget the rest of the online duty people WE EARNED OURS with not just service but sometimes our blood..THE 14th acr didn't play games on alerts each one was for real and very few didn't wind up with injuries and a few deaths during the 52 months I served with them..I got fired at more than once by the other and busted a few caps of my own..WE EARNED IT WE DESERVE IT...

I served from 1977 thru 1981 in Germany. This medal long over due. GI's who served during the cold war era from 1945 thru 1991 are more deserving to receive the cold war medal a long time ago. I proud to be one them.

"I was that which others did not want to be. I went where others feared to go, and did what others failed to do. I asked nothing from those who gave nothing, and reluctantly accepted the thought of eternal loneliness...should I fail. I have seen the face of terror; felt the stinging cold of fear; and enjoyed the sweet taste of a moment's love. I have cried, pained, and hoped...but most of all, I have lived times others would say were best forgotten. At least someday I will be able to say that I was proud of what We did. " We were... soldier."

The Cold War Service Medal would be no different from our GWOT Service Medal. The Cold War lasted decades as will our current GWOT. Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, etc were all part of the Cold War. Recognize the victory and our brother veterans.
Jerry F.
The Cold War Victory Medal should be a given. It should be for those of us who fought a war that was mostly fought in secret.
NC Sentinel
I think we as a country might be learning some lessons from the past. It took over 60 years to recognize our WWII heroes with their own monument in DC. It took the lessons of Korea and Vietnam to learn to support our troops no matter what and welcome them home with the honor they deserve.
The certificate I got from DoD was nice, but a medal and the recognition of serving under Ronald Reagan and his "Peace through stregnth" agenda would be great.
It would be nice to recognize our service, especially the 120 MIAs that are still missing.

The NDSM eligibility should be extended to include all those Cold War veterans that served between 1954-1960 and 1974-1990. The NDSM is now awarded for all that have served since 1990 to a date yet undetermined. These left out veterans defended their country against a brutal and aggressive enemy and deserve the NDSM. Pleae e-mail your senators and congress to request that the NDSM be extended to cover these veterans.
