<summary>
(LogChinook Nation Restoration Act - Extends federal recognition to the Chinook Indian Nation. Makes the Chinook Tribe and its members eligible for all services and benefits provided by the government to federally recognized tribes regardless of the existence of a reservation or the location of residence of any member on or near any Indian reservation. Provides that, for purposes of the delivery of federal services to enrolled members, the Tribe's service area shall consist of specified counties in Washington and Oregon.
Requires the Tribe to: (1) submit to edit the wikiSecretary of the Interior a membership roll; and be(2) conduct, by secret ballot, an election to adopt a constitution and bylaws. Provides that if the firstTribe transfers all rights to provideland to the Secretary, the Secretary shall take such land in trust for the Tribe's benefit, subject to specified restrictions. Directs the Secretary to: (1) negotiate with the tribal governing body regarding establishing a detailed summaryreservation; (2) develop a plan for doing so.
Requires the Secretary to: (1) notify and consult with all appropriate state officials and owners of land adjacent to those considered for the proposed reservation; and (2) provide complete information on the proposed plan to such officials. Provides for the plan's submission to Congress upon approval by the tribal governing body.
Requires any real property transferred by the Tribe or any member to the Secretary to be held in the name of the United States for the Tribe's benefit. Prohibits the exercise of eminent domain for purposes of acquiring lands for the bill!)Tribe's benefit.

August 24, 2008, 12:33am (report abuse)I think this bill should go through but I also think the clatsop-nehalem confederated tribe deserve the same thing. Because they are the true tribe who housed and supported Lewis & Clark over the winter of 1805&06 look at the journals and you will see for your self.

Our ancestors made sure our people knew where we came from and that we are Chinook! We are a Sovereign Nation! Very much alive! The Chinooks saved Lewis & Clark! I am very proud of the history. My Mother was sent to Chemawea Indian Boarding School. Along with her Mother and Grandmother and so on, in the history of our family. We are indian! Our children are indian! We deserve this for our future generations!

The blank - nehalem group is a splinter group, the clatsop people are Chinookan. One of their members was a chinook council member for 25 years. He saw an opportunity to start a new "tribe" and left! We are a tribe made up of 5 bands, we have been fighting for justice since the time of the treaties! Support our bill, make our people whole again!

October 3, 2008, 1:38pm (report abuse)This bill is long over due. The Chinookan people of the mouth of the Columbia River should have a land base and an ability to govern themselves and that land. Regarding the blank-Nehalem issue: The Chinook Nation's constitution predates many of the constitutions of recognized tribes in Oregon and Washington. It also represents an important transition from an aboriginal form of government to a democratic form. The original drafters of that document were chiefs and people of rank. The first Chairman under the current constituion was Chief Roland Charlie. These individuals clarified who the Chinook community was. The community is made up of descendants of the five westernmost Chinookan speaking peoples (the Lower Chinook, CLATSOP, Wahkiakum, Kathlamet and Willapa). Recent Chinook Tribal Councils have had as many as 7 of 9 members with Clatsop descent. The Chinook Nation is the rightful inheritors of the Clatsop.

November 19, 2008, 11:13am (report abuse)Interestingly, at the same time another bill is being considered; Columbia-Pacific National Heritage Area Study Act. A bill to direct the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a study to determine the feasibility of establishing the Columbia-Pacific National Heritage Area in the States of Washington and Oregon, and for other purposes.
How can one bill be considered without simultaneously considering the bill to recognize the tribes of the Chinook as a nation?
History recognizes how invaluable was the aid and help of the Chinooks to the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The Columbia-Pacific National Heritage Area Study Act is predicated on promoting the history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
To fail to recognize the history of the Chinook as vitally connected to the well being of Lewis and Clark expedition and subsequent development in the Columbia River/Pacific Ocean areas would dishonor authentic history.
