April 15, 2008, 3:52pm (report abuse)After all the fraud & waste reported by Iraq on 60 minutes this weekend,Bush & Cheney are shameful in their hurry to bankrupt this country.Meanwhile their corporate cronies feed at the public troff while denying hard working Americans benefits because of the economy they massacred.God save us all.JP
Kinda Desparate
April 17, 2008, 10:58pm (report abuse)13 weeks won't help much but it's better than nothing! Do it!! Considering I've got 2 college degrees and years of diverse work experience, I'm not even having luck finding a minimum wage job. I've been off now nearly a year and have exhausted my IRA in order to keep my house - and have had to pay a significant amount in penalties just to keep my house and health insurance. What's wrong with this picture?

April 19, 2008, 2:29pm (report abuse)Passed on 4/15/2008, BUT like that foolish tax "rebate", a discussion for another time, is NOT set to be enacted until June 1, 2008. BUT here is what they say the bill is SUPPOSED to do,
* Immediately provide up to 13 weeks of extended unemployment benefits in every State.
Since when was 2 months "Immediate"???? Nonetheless, Thank you Ways and Means......let's keep our fingers crossed the Senate doesn't shoot it down AGAIN by one vote.
And Mr Doyle, very well put, those of us without UI and no longer unemployed by thier standards, we are SOL

April 22, 2008, 4:31pm (report abuse)The middle class is getting trampled. Job shrinkage, lower-wage jobs to replace what we had as careers. We need this bill passed now! UI extension of benefits should have happened in January with the Stimulus Bill. It is apparent that Bush has distain for the average, hard-working American and favors only the super rich. Please Congress respond!

April 22, 2008, 10:46pm (report abuse)You all are a bunch of whiners. I bet the Framers--Adams, Jefferson, Franklin, would look upon you all with contempt and total disgust. Government is NOT DADDY! Why were you living beyond your means to begin with, and not saving money, planning ahead for any possibility? Especially if you have kids! To put your kids in danger like that, is irresponsible. You are pathetic. If you can't find work where you are, move. Time to mail in those keys to that house you couldn't afford to begin with, and rent elsewhere. "Give you a job?" HA. You go FIND a job. You'll get nowhere with that victim entitlement mentality.

This is a scary mess for all of us!

April 23, 2008, 7:29pm (report abuse)I have been out of work for 16 months, and have never had a problem finding a job. I was in construction related industry, and even though I can do other things, I still can not find a job. For each 100 jobs applied for, I may get 1 interview, with 100 others applying for the same job. Yes, we need this benefit and now!!!!! Is this true that it will not be voted on until June 1????

April 24, 2008, 9:44am (report abuse)HR5769 needs to discussed now! This is an emergency for all the American people who have worked and paid into this. Step away from your fancy cars and nice desks to sit at without a worry. Come out here in the real world and put our shoes on and walk in them for a day. I'm sure you'd feel what it is like then! Just awful we are always last when it comes to things of importance. This needs to be addressed NOW! People can't wait till JUNE??? What is wrong with our country? It's very sad people wait years for help with disability claims, no health insurance? Then after you work your entire life and need help---NO ONE IS LISTENING!!

April 24, 2008, 8:59pm (report abuse)I as well need this extension. I have not worked since 09/2007. I am able, willing and seeking work here in Michigan, outside Detroit. My benefits are exhausted. I am 45 years old and never drew unemployment until Sept/2007. I have always worked and paid my taxes fairly. I am very worried if this bill will not pass. I have sold most I own on C.L. It is expensive just seeking work, Insurance for car and gas basically took half of my benefits when I had them. Hundreds of resumes, very few interviews...many hundreds of emails to job sites...all to only still be unemployed.
Please pass this bill!

April 26, 2008, 10:14pm (report abuse)It was McCain's single vote that defeated the passing of S 4522 in the Stimulus Package...

Concerned American
April 27, 2008, 11:17am (report abuse)You need to act one unemployment benefits now. This issue is far more important than the ones on the agenda. We're talking about putting American familys on the street and not being able to pay there bills and let alone buy food to survive. Also with gas prices so out of reach how can you afford to buy gas to go and apply for a job. You know as I do most people have to live pay check to pay check! This is cruel and devastating. Help the American People!

April 27, 2008, 3:37pm (report abuse)This is the 'beginning of the end' and all we have feared for years is now upon us:
One World Government
One Currency
NO JOBS, period, because they've all been out-sourced by the Republican/Conservatives for 30 years now and because of Wal-Mart
An 'incarcerated' Police State
The middle-class sucked-down into poverty so their former wealth goes to the upper-class
Unaffordable gas...NO FOOD!
China now manufactures 75% of the world's goods! Russia has no debt! China is drilling for oil 50 miles off-shore from Key West!
The USA will be a 3rd World Country shortly, as planned by the Bushes, Chaney, and 'MR. OXYCONTIN' himself, Rush Limbaugh...oh yeah, he 'bought his way out of that' too, didn't he???
Are you all glad you voted the Bushes & Chaney into office? And they say the terrorists are in the Middle East!
And it was McCain's SINGLE VOTE that prevented S 2544 from being part of the 'Stimulus Package!'
H.R. 5749 is unconstutional
April 27, 2008, 11:52pm (report abuse)The only way the goverment can give is if they steal it from someone elce. I don't need to pay more for unemployment. HR 5749 and all bills like this one are bad for AMerica. We don't need a hand out from King George. What we need is a hand up and this bill is a hand out.... If the so called elected leaders want to help Americans unemployed, charge the incomming good from the forgine nations a tariff and stop the goverment programs funded by my stolen tax dollar that help American Ind to move to forgine nations. Stop giving subs to the oil producers not to pump oil... Let the fair market in America work for America and put America 1st instead of worry so much about Mexico and africa.. FOlks write you leaders and tell them to screw there goverment programs..
give me large goverment control. We need another goverment program.
April 27, 2008, 11:55pm (report abuse)We as Americans are not able to manage our own lives and need the goverment to control it.. Give us King George.. Give us a hand out.. I need my rations this week

I cut fire wood to make ends meet untill the FAIR market works it's self out. Please no more goverment hand outs, I don't want rations. I want to work , Trucking has got more regulation than anything I elce I know about and the regulation needs to be adjusted if nothing elce can be done.Help American truckers give, us a hand up and not a hand out.Legislation like S. 2910, the "Trust in Reliable Understanding of Consumer Costs Act is a hand up . April 28, 2008, 3:06pm (report abuse)I have a degree and have been employed in the homebuilding industry for 20 years. Last October my pay and hours were cut until the company closed its doors for good in January this year. I have been unsuccessful in finding any kind of a job with liveable wages or reasonable opportunity for growth. I had, with foresight, saved for this eventuality, but will have exhausted all my resources this month. I will take a job at $9.00 as a last resort. and I am working towards beginning a homebased business. I just need a little more time.

April 28, 2008, 11:02pm (report abuse)I've been out of work since the company I was working for was closed last year. Through no fault of my own I have been unable to find work of any kind. Now with my benefits exhausted and my bank acount drained I can no longer afford to drive to an interview, let alone eat or afford the basics of life. I cannot wait a month and a half to get extended benefits. By the time they come through (if they come through) I will have died from starvation. Yeah I know I can go to a food bank, but without the gas to get there...This is a supposed to be a government of the people, by the people and for the people...apparently the people in government don't give a damn about the people they are supposed to represent...We needed this yesterday...for me it's too late...I wonder if they realize just how bad off the people really are or if they even care!!! We can help the people in the rest of the world...it's time to help those of us here at home!!!
To: Darrell
April 28, 2008, 11:53pm (report abuse)Government is of the people, for the people, and by the people. It just doesn't mean government has to feed you. That's your own responsibility. The founding fathers gave you the freedom to live your life the way you choose. You make your own destiny. They would never in a million years have designed a government to feed you. It's hard, especially when you get brainwashed into a victim/entitlement mentality, but you have to get up, wipe your nose, dust your jeans off, and try again. If you depend on government, you will fail EVERY time.

---------------------------------
I suppose you are one of those elitist responsible people who agrees with wasting billions onwarmongering for no purpose and grafting out no bid contracts that do nothing at all for the American people who are told to 'eat cake' in New orleans and elsewhere -just send it all to Cheney's Buddies and the jobs to China -whilst the rest worry sick where and how they are going to live. You and your ilk are disgusting and have ruined this once great country.

Does that apply to the billions taken away from 'the people by the people' who were elected and are nicely paid by us to serve our better interests or theres I wonder.

April 29, 2008, 10:15am (report abuse)Responsible American- I bet the framers didn't count on our goverment to sell out our jobs to other countries either. And the jobs that they are trying to replace them with are insufficient income to support a family(i.e Walmart,McDonald's,ect)

April 30, 2008, 7:45am (report abuse)I dont understand why the employed people are even posting on this site, the only thing i can think of is that they enjoy watching other people in misery, like our leaders, they dont think that the goverment should help out,let me ask them something, are they goin to cash their economic stimulis check, because that is accepting help,so all you high and mighty people lucky enough to be working and have food on the table, return your stimulis checks hot shots, then come on this site and talk sh*t about not receiving help from the govt
James
April 30, 2008, 8:28am (report abuse)Chris: You're a LOSER, and a COWARD! MANY posters were NOT "living beyond their means," and are responsible tax-paying parents who CANNOT FIND A JOB, any job, because there are NO JOBS available.
Bush's Unemployment figures CONVENIENTLY do NOT include tax payers & constituents who's Unemployment Compensation has run-out and they still CAN'T FIND A JOB.
Bush's Unemployment Rate is more like 10%, and that is his legacy that will go down in history - WORSE UNEMPLOYMENT THAN JIMMY CARTER!
Bush's 'Fairy Tale War' costs us $275,000,000.00 a day, and the oil companies just reported RECORD PROFITS as a result of SCREWING US @ the gas pumps!
YOU are a "PATHETIC" INSIGNIFICANT COWARD Chris.
I'll bet you get your ass kicked every time you spout your BULLSH*T in public, and rightfully so!

April 30, 2008, 11:11am (report abuse)Ditto, James. I wonder if Chris even knows that we are paying taxes on unemploymnent compensation. He does seem to be a little uneducated.
To those ingnorant enough not to know the difference -
April 30, 2008, 12:45pm (report abuse)Unemploymnent Insurance is exactly that - INSURANCE into which both employers and employees (depending on the state) have paid into DURING THE EMPLOYEES' WORKING LIVES to provide for hard times when they have been laid off for reasons NOT CAUSED BY THEM. If they are responsible for the layoff, they are not eligible for unemployment benefits. The extension would not be a government "handout", merely a guarantee to extend the six months of INSURANCE BENEFITS they are entitled to receive for a few more weeks to hold them over. I am a 62-year old woman who has worked her whole life who was one of the thousands of people laid off by Bank of America and other financial institutions. How dare you try to make me feel worse than I already do? If you are working and have time to post to this blog, perhaps you are one of the lazy asses who are on the internet on their jobs while they should be working! I'll keep trying to get a job - but you should go get a life!

April 30, 2008, 10:38pm (report abuse)unemployment is very high and people are running out of benifit's nd are struggling to survive extensions should ne given NOW before people start killing , stealing ETC.. just to have food to eat and a place to sleep Approve unemployment extension's now before thing's get out of control before long their won't be a middle class family it will be Poor people and Rich People but the poor will be the ones struggling and the rich will be warm and have food to eat with gas prices the way they are how are people supposed to look for a job with no money to put in there car's or money to insure them besides that there is'nt any jobs in michigan unless you are a person with a degree and those are scarce also.

April 30, 2008, 10:58pm (report abuse)Cris i agree with James these people that are leaving comment's are more than likely hard working citizens that have lost there job's because they have been shipped out of the country or have just closed down it is really Rude of you to make any judgement's of these people when you have no idea of anyone's situation you are right the goverment is'nt our Daddy BUT THEY ARE MOST OF THE BLAME FOR OUR COUNTRY'S PROBLEMS and as far as you go i have no idea what situation you are in but most people do plan ahead but sometimes thing's happen beyond a person's control and THESE PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO KEEP THERE KID'S SAFE but with no job's out there they need a little more unemployment benifit's to get by and most of these people have worked hard and deserve the help during these hard time's but since you sound like you have everything in control finacially I pray that you don't eat your ignorant comment.
