Port Huron resident
This bill would create opportunities for the citizens of Port Huron. We really have had very little support given to us on the national level, and it's time for some help. This is a way to help without giving a handout. Please consider the city of Port Huron and St. Clair County in the decision making process on this issue.
Also note that the people fighting this bill have ties to potential competition, which should lead you to question their motives and the benefits they are receiving for arguing their case.
The Verifiable Truth
Detroit casino syndicator Michael J. Malik and his partners, members of Detroit's Ilitch Family (Mike Ilitch, Marian Ilitch and their adult children) are behind this scheme for an off-reservation Indian casino.
Marian Ilitch owns Detroit's MotorCity Casino and Malik was her one-time partner until he failed to win a gambling license from the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGB).
With this scheme, Malik would not have to be licensed by the MGCB and the casino would not be subject to the same tax burdens faced by Detroit's other commercial casinos.
Malik and the Indian tribe have paid lobbyists nearly $3 million and Malik and the Ilitch Clan has contributed nearly $800,000 to federal campaign committees attempting to influence Congressional approval of this unorthodox plan.
