H.R. 808 would establish a Department of Peace.

Detailed Summary

Department of Peace Act - Establishes a Department of Peace, which shall be headed by a Secretary of Peace (Secretary).

Sets forth the mission of the Department, including: (1) cultivation of peace as a national policy objective; and (2) development of policies that promote national and international conflict prevention, nonviolent intervention, mediation, peaceful conflict resolution, and structured conflict mediation.

Status of the Legislation

Latest Major Action: 7/23/2009: Referred to House subcommittee. Status: Referred to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.

Points in Favor

The Center for Disease Control estimates the cost of violence in the U.S. to be $300 Billion annually. This does not include the cost of wars, nor does it include any measure of the tremendous human cost. The Department of Peace will research and implement proven technologies that will reduce violence in our society, helping people learn to resolve their conflicts through nonviolent means.

Such proven programs will reduce prison recidivism rates, domestic violence, gang violence, school bullying, and many other forms of violence. The money saved from violence reduction in the U.S. will more than pay for the cost of the new bureaucracy.

Points Against

(Log in to edit the wiki and be the first to show why the bill should not pass!)
