October 25, 2009, 10:10am (report abuse)The Eagle is the sea training ground for potential officers, a science lab if you will, to learn navigation and other essentials of the sea. You might think it could be learned in a book or they can rely on high tech instruments, but two scenarios come to mind, the knowledge and ability to respond to other vessel captains struggling under sail, communicate from the perspsective of a sailor the threat or in danger of weather, tides and currents; be able to operate ANY vessel, either to rescue or recover; be able to extract themselves and others by any means from any form of capture or imprisonment they might encounter as individuals. Men and women place themselves in great danger every day - saving lives and on police duties. They must have a full knowledge capacity to respond in any situation, navigate by technological or historical means, uncharted or unsafe waters in any vessel at any time. In addition they learn to function as a team. That is not a boat for show, it is a classroom.

September 13, 2010, 4:18pm (report abuse)Like most earmarks, I believe the Coast Guard is in a much better position to prioritize cost effective use of funds than a Senator whose primary interests is bringing home the bacon for his state. Is it a cool thing to do? Yes. Is it an appropriate thing to do, given that the only way we get the funds is to borrow and let our grandkids try to pay it back? NO!
