February 27, 2009, 8:59am (report abuse)There have been to few incidents to warrant any legislation on this. Lets concentrate on getting the economy back on track!

February 27, 2009, 9:42am (report abuse)I cannot believe with the shape our economy is in that Congress would waste time with such ridiculous issues. Little by little we as American citizens are allowing our rights to be stripped away. Next animal rights people(what a joke)will be telling us no pets at all. Ummm….I think I read somewhere that is already in the making. It is easier to stop a bill before it passes than it is to remove one. We need to be heard and it needs to start here!!

February 27, 2009, 10:07am (report abuse)This is a American and we have the right to choose, that is what this county was founded on. 100,000 dog attacks verses how many monkey attacks last year. Dogs have killed, how many monkeys have actually killed. What happen to the big picture of the economy, jobs, afforable health care, kids that can read when they graduate,Bringing our men and women home from war, Stop this Bill!!

February 27, 2009, 10:08am (report abuse)This is a terrible bill proposed by Animal Rights activists who are actively attempting to remove all private ownership rights of animals. In most states, there are already permit laws on the books. Enforce the laws we have for those who break the law, do not punish those who do not break the law, but chose to live responsibly with "different" animals!

February 27, 2009, 11:01am (report abuse)I am beginning to feel like I am living in a communist country and the very freedom that our soldiers are currently having their legs blown off for is being threatened. Passing this bill may be of no importance to some, but it is only the beginning. Investigate this yourself before voting on this bill. The AR groups like Peta who advise you to pass this bill are the same ones who were reported on the news , throwing dogs that they were supposed to be saving, in a dumpster. They are a sham and area all about the money. Responsible primate owners should not be punsihed all over the US for a couple of careless and rare incidents. The responsible primate owners love their primates like part of their family. Would you want your family dog taken away because your neighbors dog bit someone, because they weren't responsible enough to see that this would never happen? Each state can have regulations and permits to ensure that exotics are taken care of properly as far as cage size, etc.

February 27, 2009, 11:11am (report abuse)When we give up Liberty for a small piece of saftey, we have neither.Non human primates have lived amongst and with humans since the beginning of time. When our government begins to violate the constitution of America this is becoming a very sad nation. People will always live with Primates. Should this CPSA beome law, it will shove people in hiding, losing their Liberty and safety as there will be so many Non-Human Primates that will not be able to live the lives with their owners/companions in a healthy and safe way. Animal Activists would rather see thousands of primates put down that to see them live happy lives with their owners. Born and raised in captivity properly, they are an exotic choice for a pet, not a wild animal. They are very loyal just like many dogs are to their owners. There have been very few incidents in this country to even consider taking this drastic step violating the constitution. What ban do we create when a child snaps and kills many others at a highschool?

February 27, 2009, 12:26pm (report abuse)I have been a responsible primate keeper for 21 years. I have a 21 year old Spider Monkey and a 15 year old Black Macaque. I have never had an escape or an injury to the public. I realize there are irresponsibile owners of all kinds of animals and parents that abuse or neglect children every day.I should not be punished for what others have done. You are designating funds for enforcing this bill so why not have regulations and permits as an alternative to this bill. This bill will be a hardship for some. Permits and regulations will weed out the irresponsible owners. The designated funds along with the cost of the permits will cover the enforcement and inspections for individuals who have permits or are wanting permits. I feel that it is my right to choose what animals I keep in my home and on my property.
Responsible Ownership
February 27, 2009, 1:25pm (report abuse)Responsible owner is the key, whether it is a dog, a cat, hamster or a primate. We have had primates for over 20 years. We have never had an escape, or an injury to the public. Our primates are caged. They are caged with in accordance with the rules of our state. We have an escape cage should they ever free themselves from thier original cage, something which has NEVER happened in 20 years. We care for them as if they are family. We protect them as if they are family. We also do not want to expose them to any danger. It is all about responsibility. Please believe me when I say that this is the norm for people who share their lives with primates. We love and care for them, and want NO harm to come to them or others.

February 27, 2009, 2:28pm (report abuse)There is really no reason for this bill at all. I have been a responsible primate owner for over 12 years. I have not had a problem with escapes or injuries of any kind.
You can not compare a monkey to a great ape ( chimps, organ. etc) that is like comparing a house cat to a lion.
There has never been a case of rabies or disease in the private sector in the 100 years that americans have owned primates in the private sector.

February 27, 2009, 3:06pm (report abuse)dose anyone know how this bill will effect circuses and traveling primate acts?

February 27, 2009, 10:11pm (report abuse)I believe they should concentrate on the really dangerous large animals and leave the primates who bite no worse than dogs alone. PETA is more dangerous than the primates they are trying to ban. I have had small monkeys for about 20 years and never had an escape or a problem. Our small monkeys are better off than the sanctuary monk3eys Where are the rights my father and husband fought for.

February 28, 2009, 1:24am (report abuse)with the mess our nation is in right now...it seems a shame to waiste time on a monkey bite. Our children are dying overseas,in schools,in our own neighborhoods.Parents killing their children, children killing their parents.drunk drivers & drug attics killing people...our world is a mess.....what about all the illegal persons in our country ...seems they have more rights than those born in the usa,,,,I believe they need to take care of the REAL dangerous animals...Human beings and leave the poor monkeys alone
Denise
February 28, 2009, 7:29am (report abuse)Aren't there more important things to worry about right now, like the economy? Come on people.....Dogs bite more people every year than primates do...maybe you should ban dogs also...Isn't this America??? Shouldn't we taxpayers be able to choose what we want to have? Who do these yahoo's think they are? Get a life people and focus on more important issues. Leave us responsible monkey owners alone!!!
It would be over my cold dead body before anyone would walk into my home and take my monkey from me...

February 28, 2009, 9:16am (report abuse)Why is Washington worried about the primate bill when the US as we know it is falling down around our knees? What we as americans choose to own/have as pets should be no ones business but OUR! The bottom line is responsible ownership not bans! Dogs and cats do more damage with bites than primates. Are we banings dogs too? Don't punish the responsible owners for the few that aren't responsible. We as a nation have fought for our rights, but our rights are disappearing daily. Let's be proud to be Americans, worry about what is important, and leave PETS alone!

February 28, 2009, 10:21am (report abuse)If we are going to make laws on safety for humans, well you better start with humans! How many humans for no apparent reason Rip up innocent wives, children and leave them for dead or dead. How many dogs, horses and other animals hurt people for no apparent reason...so where does it start and where does it end. Do we band people from being around other people because they may freak out and loose it and kill others, or outlaw dogs, horses, snakes etc. for the fear of a terrible accident. It all amounts to being responsible pet owners and responsible people. I have been accidently hurt very badly by animals and I still dearly love them and would not want anyone to take them from me. Life is full of accidents, and alot of human violence by choice or rage, I pray you think this over and I also Pray for the lady that was hurt and for the lady who lost her chimp and what she now has for a life without her Chimp and the and the agony she must be going thru over one of her dearest friends.

(logged in user) February 28, 2009, 10:25am (report abuse)As a primate owner and an owner of many other animals I feel that this law is very unfair. It should be my right to take my pets where ever I feel appropreate. I think that all primate owners are very responsible not ony for the public but for the safety of their furry friends. These little guys like to go for rides or go visit other family members, or go on vacation with with my children and myself, they are a big part of the family. If we have to cut them out of our everyday activities then you are taking away our rights. Please consentrate more on the important thing like the ecomomy and the men and women in Irac and leave our pets alone.

February 28, 2009, 3:22pm (report abuse)This by far is one of the most unamerican things I've ever heard of! Our brothers, sisters, children, aunts & uncles are overseas fighting and dying for their country and their government is has nuthing else better to pass bills about! What is "Our America" comming to? Bailing out companies that make stupid decisions & now trying to pentilize responsible primated owners. All because there are a few who have been irrisponsable? I mean do they really think this bill is going to keep accidents from happening? Do we as responsible primate owners and Americans, not have a say at all? What's next ban on dogs & cats? Because their accidents and attacts are far greater in our country than any by primates. Our country can't even over come its deficit and our government thinks this is something it needs to spend money on! Come on and wake up country! Make better decisions for our land of the "free"!
Virginia
February 28, 2009, 4:17pm (report abuse)This bill will prevent families who own monkeys of any size...some as small as a pound....from taking their pets with them when they visit relatives or are transferred to a new state. I thought this was the land of the free where humans were entitled to the pursuit of happiness?

(logged in user) March 1, 2009, 12:30am (report abuse)A government that has just run up more than a trillion dollars in debt for ridiculous "pork" projects in a Stimulus Package that NO ONE read has no right to make laws restricting the ownership of beloved animals! How many of the Reps. and Senators have ever been around privately-owned primates? They have been brainswashed by the P{ETA crowd and others like them who are control freaks and care nothing for the animals. It's Socialism, folks, bordering on Communism, and the pathetic government wants to ban pets! From what we are told, the world is on the verge of financial collapse, we could any minute be attacked, the banks and industries are failing. People are losing their homes and jobs. Yet, a few primates are the TARGET? Utter nonsense by elected fools! How about going after the tens of millions of ILLEGAL ALIENS that commit crimes in record numbers, steal our jobs, suck 70 billion $$$ from our welfare, medical and educational systems each year?
PissedOffByGovernment
March 1, 2009, 11:06pm (report abuse)This is so stupid. Just one more way for the government to control our lives. We can have cats, dogs, lizards, snakes, and many others so why not primates. Yes maybe some laws need be made such as leash laws, but any responsible person would take care to ensure the saftey of others around them no matter if its a monkey or a dog. All this bill will do is ensure primates that do have homes, and families will be punished and mistreated. They are very loving and fascinating creatures, and i would say better companions than dogs. They are like children and need to be taken care of. What comes next are they gonna tell us we cant have kids or to leave your small child at home in a cage while you went somewhere because they cant act accordingly? I think the government has more pressing issues to take care of and needs to but out of our personal lives!!!!!!!

March 3, 2009, 1:33pm (report abuse)This is ridiculous - I agree with everyone else that they should be concentrating on other things.
The fact that this bill only comes up after the incident with Travis and it would never have stopped an incident like it - is proof that it is a waste of time and just hurting us good monkeys.

March 6, 2009, 4:48pm (report abuse)I know a couple of great family's that own primates. They also breed them (USDA LICENSED)and their income depends on the interstate sale of the primates! What will they do? Just be another Family in foreclosure?? Making people jobless right now is not smart!
Anne
March 6, 2009, 4:53pm (report abuse)If this is made a law, people will still buy them! But they will hide them and the primates will suffer for it. No one will take them to the vet. for shots,...ect. In fear that they will be confiscated!!!

March 29, 2009, 8:29am (report abuse)so i don't get it how many monkeys are being killed each year and what by?

July 24, 2009, 9:51am (report abuse)Primates are wild animals that are not meant to live in captivity. When are humans going to realize that we do not have the right to deny any non-human the right to live their lives as they please with freedom.
Joe Q. Public
August 2, 2009, 12:09am (report abuse)Please pass this bill. Non-human primates have no place as pets; they belong in the wild. What non-human primate is native to the United States? Not one! Non-human primates should not be forced to adapt to living in unnatural surroundings and non-native habitats, often isolated from their own species. Thank you to members of Congress who have already voted to pass this bill!
(Regarding this comment section: Why do many people who comment say things like “Aren’t there more important things, like ______ (fill in the blank—war, economy, etc.)? If this issue isn't that important then why did YOU bother to voice your opinion? Just wondering.)
Reveremd Josh Taylor
August 13, 2009, 4:07am (report abuse)For the love of God, pass this bill. Primates aren't family, nor pets. They should be sent back to Africa or sent to a laboratory as drug test subjects so that the FDA would determine that the vaccines are safe or not before the deadly H1N1 season.

November 18, 2009, 7:35am (report abuse)I don't own any monks, but I feel that this bill is just another infringement on rights of Americans ... unless you are deep pocket Pharm co. Who are the jokers who introduced and support this bill?

November 25, 2009, 1:41pm (report abuse)Please do NOT support or pass this bill. Primates can make exceptional companions when raised properly in captivity. When taking one into your home they become a part of your family, passing this bill will only hinder the responsible owners from taking care of them to the best of their abilities (such as needing to leave the state to go see your vet). Primates are no different then cats and dogs, they do give you even a higher level of companionship though, and stay around much longer. I personally own four primates, three Tamarins, and a Capuchin. My monkeys are in NO way dangerous, and do NOT carry diseases. Whoever thought that up is very wrong, as there has never been a disease transmission from a pet primate to their owner EVER! Although primates are a big responsibility and committment, many are willing to sacrifice their time with their beloved primate. Do not pass this bill, for it will be taking our rights away and will limit us from properly caring for our primates.
