I am FOR extending unemployment as long as it doesn't just extend # of weeks, but also the amt of funds available to an individual. Weeks could expire in Sept but funds run out in Feb or March...need extension of amt of money allowed to collect in that time period.

I am soon to exhaust my benefits of unemployement.I definetely need to express that i am in favor of the benefit extension bill.It is seemingly near impossible to land a job with this recession situation.It seems the government is more concerned of how our economy looks in the eyes of the world than finding a permanant solution.I believe helping the people progress and survive is what is mandatory.If unemployement were extended,it would be a temporary boost,but by no means will this be resolved overnight.The solution starts with focus on people in every walk of life,and jobs must not be so reliant on the auto industry.This is why we have this on going battle today.There was never a back-up plan.What would Las Vegas do if all the casinos went under?I believe i can rest my case on that example. NEWS FLASH, I have NEVER gone this long without a job in my life, and I have NEVER applied for 100+ positions and still been unemployed. After having served in Afghanistan and Iraq, I returned to the US in July 2006 and was fortunately able to find a job relatively quickly. However, in late August 2007 I was
laid-off and have been unable to find a job since. It's obvious to everyone but the politicians that the economy is in a RECESSION!

It is simply stunning to me that that the unemployed whose benefits have run out are left swinging in the wind. Republican thinking is that UB's just keep people from looking for work. Huh? The bottom line is you have more unemployed looking for fewer available jobs. Virtually every economist will tell you that an extension is THE quickest way to inject $$ into a failing economy. I ran out of benefits in Oct. and quite frankly, the people at the unemployment office are sick of seeing me. It is my hope that sense and doing the right thing rather than political posturing would prevail in Washington, (I can hear the laughing now). I've always been a proud American but this situation has certainly disillusioned me.

I have been applying for jobs for the last 7 months with no luck, (my benefits ran out long ago...) even at entry level positions!
Never in my 20+ years of working have I seen such a sad situation.
This Bill was introduced in January...We are now in March, with no movement on this bill.

S.2544 was introduced in January why is it taking so long to be passed when it is so criticlyED needed for all those who have been unemployed for so long with no income. It should have been passed days before yesterday. The figure that employment is up is not a true picture because there are so many people who are frustrated looking for a job and very depressing to be told that companies are not hiring.

My unemployment benefits end this week. I have been trying to find comparable work in my profession since June '07. It is a scary time. Both the unemployment office and the career placement center that I have been going to are loaded with qualified professionals over the age of 50 that cannot find work. The government needs to pass S 2544 to extend unemployment benefits to those of us that are seriously looking for employment. It is tough to stay afloat with normal housing expenses and food, let alone a $1300 COBRA payment.

I have used up my unemployment benefits as of this week. I am a 58 yr old female and I have worked since I was out of high school. This is the first I have been out of work and unable to find a job. I now have my age and a terrible job market to contend with. I am not unemployed because it is what I desire and I feel I speak for a lot of unemployed Americans - where is the help from the govt we have supported.

I was able to find a part time job but even still my unemployment benefits will run out in June. I've been applyling for jobs daily with only a couple of interviews in the past 5 months. I don't know what I'm going to do if I can't find a full time job by June. How can I support my son, pay for gas, food? I never thought I may someday be homeless. Please get this bill passed.

I ran out of benefits last week and will turn 61 on Easter Sunday. I have been out looking for work since last July. I think people look at my resume and figure I'm to old. What happened with hiring a veteran. Congress needs to step up to the plate and pass an extension so all the people who are unemployed can extend their job search. I was laid off in August of 2007. I have applied for over a 1000 jobs, not one offer. I have a B.S. in Business Administration and I was attending the University of Pennsylvania for a M.S. WHAT!!! There is no recession and jobs are plentiful? I have applied for $12 an hour jobs and can't get one. We need an extension of unemployment benefits yesterday. I was laid-off June, 2007, and am over 45. I have had three interviews and have applied for an average of 10-15 jobs/day, some of them not even my profession. I had to stop COBRA at $1000/month so now I also have no medical or dental for me and my son. My U/E ends in two weeks. I sure hope and pray this bill will go through. Oh, this is the first time I have been unemployed since I was 12 years old. The extension would help during this difficult time. We will be homeless as well.

The government has seriously underestimated the effects of the deterioriating economy on the unemployed. We cannot find jobs, employers are hesitant to hire (and I don't blame them!). Unemployment extensions, while late, would help infuse the economy with increased spending but it looks as though before that happens, there are going to be a great many of us applying for (and qualifying for and receiving) public assistance, cash assistance, food stamps, and Medicaid. And isn't that just what New York State needs? Help us to help ourselves, or foot the entire bill. Choice seems clear, but doubt President Bush will act!

Is that what we have to do to provide for our children? I have life insurance but my son needs me here alive. I sometimes think perhaps that is what the govt wants...to decrease the surplus population. They sure have narrowed down our choices. I hear all the stupid things being discussed now on TV in House and Senate while people are becoming homeless and w/o food. The right thing to do is to extend unemployment benefits now. The jobs are not there, businesses are not hiring...and you know it..which makes it worse that you haven't done anything to remedy it.

I am very stressed out about umemployment mine runs out in 4 weeks. Im a single mom I do not recieve child support. I am going to loose everything Walmart fired me after 2yr 7month for misconduct denied my unemployment but after 8 weeks I won my case I was eligble for rehire after one month they never hired me back. I live in a small town I have 56 applications in and still nothing I have a really old car that could not handle a 78 mile driver every day or I would look in another state.I put alot of quality time in my job and getting fired is what I got. If they dont extend unemployment benifits. We will all be living in the streets

In December, I was laid off from a temp job and have three months until my unemployment benefits run out. I do have a part time job, but it's not enough. I am a 62-year old woman who lost my job due to downsizing of a large corporation. Contrary to the judgmental assumptions of some folks who oppose the extension of unemployment benefits, I have always worked and would much rather be working than collecting unemployment. I've had absoutely no luck and will most likely have to move in with my chidren and/or apply for welfare to make ends meet. I do not understand why some politicians would rather put those of who have worked on the welfare rather than extend unemployment benefits during these bad times.

This is ridiculous. I haven't even been able to get a decent temp job, and mine runs out in just a couple of weeks or less.
It hasn't taken me this long to get a job since 2002/2003. Usually I could get some sort of temp work at 11 dollars per hour. Since my job ended in October of 2007 I've had so little work and most of the offers have been to places I can't get to because I don't have a car. It's obviously that most people are FOR this bill. I'm behind on my rent already. This extension is desparately needed.

I am nearly 48 years old and am highly skilled in the administrative ass't/exec ass't field and it should be a "no brainer" in finding work. I have 20 years experience in the mortgage industry and lost my job in September. Have applied for jobs from management to receptionist and can't even get a call for an interview. Most job listings state that they are having an overwhelming response and can't get back to everyone. My benefits ran out beginning of March. I've been out of work since September of last year after being laid off. I have filled out so many applications, I lost count. I've had a few interviews, only to hear, we'll call you... I find myself applying at places that have absolutely nothing to do with my background/skills out of despair. My mortgage is in default, we can barely keep the lights on and water running, and we may have to voluntarily turn in one of our cars. And the only relief is credit counseling for mortgage holders... Great.. just what I need.. someone to tell me how to budget money that I no longer have. I think they are missing the point. I need MONEY not counseling. I didn't ask to get laid off.
They definitely need to extend this program; my Unemployment ran out in March as well and the mortgage company will be running me out of my home soon.

I'm sorry to hear all these stories of people suffering hard times, but I'm not sure why that gives you a right to tap into MY money to support yourselves. That's what we're talking about here. Look what we have become, hard working, tax paying honest citizens worrying about becoming Homeless. We are no longer talking about cutting back or exhausting our savings. We as Americans are way passed that. We are now worrying about the basic needs for living, food, Homes etc. I myself join Americans in the quest for such basic needs. We all want to work, we all want to pay our own way but the way things are we cannot. We have payed every kind of tax our government could come up with as our civic duty. Now all we ask is to keep what little dignity we have left. Here is a good one. Go to grants (dot)gov. Look at what we pay people to train other countries to do. We pay Pakistan 300 million a year to teach people there a new trade. We pay Iraq's people ( yes the ones that kill our children )1.5 billion a year to learn a new trade. Wow soon I won't have to work, live or breath. My country will pay someone else to do it for me. Please open your eyes and read the people's comments here very carefully... do they sound to you as if they are NOT looking for jobs? When was the last time that you listened to the news regarding the facts of life when it comes to the state of our economy and the job market? Your comment could only come from someone who does not have a clue about what is happening in our country. I am an educated, 40 yr old woman with a degree in Finance.When I got this degree 2 yrs ago, and paid for all education myself, I was let go due to a reckless Financial Advisor. I've never been unemployed in my life. I have 2 kids and now my unemployment has run out. I have applied for over 100 jobs and the only call was from one agency who said my chances of finding anything permanent right now is a huge challenge. I need this extension so bad. I'm scared like never before. There is serious stagnation in companies hiring. They just arent. I feel like this matter is being completely ignored by our Administration, including the Fed. Please, we need this extension NOW!

I lost my job on the 5th of July 2007. I have talked with thousands of employers. Gone on interview after interview with no results some called me back for 2nd and even 3rd meetings. However I was never hired for anything. I have applied to the NJ aquarium to PSEG and everything in between. I have gone as far as to apply overseas for jobs. I was selected to work as a machinist in Iraq at 90k a year. Had everything read to go and the contractor pulled a fast one and said the government pulled their long term contracts. And so before I had the job I was turned away. I ran out of Benefits for Unemployment in Jan 08. And I have depleted all my savings! And short of selling everything I own before I and my 3 children are kicked out in to the street. I this month go behind on all my bills. I cannot afford to paid my car insurance, phone bill or anything else. I don’t think I’ll even be able to write more on this site after next week.

My unemployment benefits expired 2 weeks ago. With the state of our economy, how in the world can our government pass a stimulus package and exclude unemployment benefit extension?? When your income goes from 56k to 0 and you have to pay $716 a month in COBRA,and your house has declined in value and your IRA's have lost value...how on earth are we to survive? I might add even though age discrimination is supposed to be illegal, it goes on ALL the time. My benefits expired 3 weeks ago and I have spent everyday of my unemployment (26 weeks)trying to find employment. I have an MBA but am in Ohio where many companies have moved out. I am to the point were I am going to have to file for some type of assistances to help me eat. The meezly rebate that I will get in May will not help me stimulate the economy but giving me help for a few months longer could get me a job.

I was layed off due to a closure of a Bergen county hospital in November of 2007. I worked there for 25 plus years, lost 2 weeks vacation plus over 500 hours of sick time. The job market for health care,( mine specific-laboratory technician) is scarce. NJ just drastically cut charity care to every NJ hospital in NJ but one. And the reimbursement for all health care facilities worsens daily due to no restrictions on the health care insurances. Why is this being aloud? I have been seeking a position almost daily on the internet and mailing my resumes since my layoff. NJ has a obligation to its health care workers due to this health care crisis. Since I have contributed for over 25 years to the system I feel I need to be granted this extension in the hopes of finding the right job.

I spoke with a rep yesterday from unemployment and I was told that this bill has been on President Bush desk and he wont sign. They said the problem is as follows: once you exhaust your unemployment, your name is removed from the unemployment stats and in such we are no longer being accounted for. So they are not receiving statistically an accurate account of the millions of unemployed people in the USA. Only the ones receiving unemployment. In turn, President Bush does not see the full impact this economy has had on the people of this country. Plus he hopes that the stimulus check will bounce back the country. Get real! That is like putting a bandage on a broken leg. Let your congressmen and women know that you are one of those unaccounted country men/women who are still unemployed.

And further more! My friends who live in Southern Cal and in Phoenix Az. Who both work for Electronics firms and lost their jobs in the fall last year. And now benefits have run out and the only option is bankruptcy. They can’t find jobs! And I here in South NJ And can’t find anything! Whoops I shouldn’t say that. I could work 3 hours a night for UPS 12 to 3am for 8.50 and hour. How about my family in Florida! This is just one of the people in trouble. My Uncle in Clermont Fla, Has been raising Oranges for 50+ years. You would think he makes a good living. No he does not! Really!! He has a very large orange grove and this past season he put more into everything needed to produce a crop than he made. This is how this worked. See for years Brazilian companies have secretly purchased all the juice companies in his area. And now they control the market in Florida. They only pay what they deem a fair price. I his case 15k for his whole crop. He hires union Brazilians to pick his crop at 7500.00 he moves the oranges to plant. He ends up with 7500.00. But he pays 9000 to maintain his crop. He out 1500.00. Free trade I don’t think so……

Unemployment rates quoted ARE inaccurate. A report of those LOOKING for work valid. As a former mortgage employee, I lost 2 jobs to downsizing. My unemployment benefits are exhausted. An extension is required. But some members of Congress believe we wait until benefits end, and then look for a job.
Another issue is health insurance. If I don't find a job with benefits by August, I will be uninsured. Paying $500 a month for COBRA coverage is hard, but a gap gives insurance companies the ability to deny a claim, saying it was pre-existing.
The we have age discrimination. Most laid off where I worked are over 50. Most kept are under 25. That's interesting, don't you think? Age discrimination is rampant. A recent local news article was titled "Retaining the Talented Young." The writer wasn't promoting age discrimination, but his article proves it is in our area.

I am all for the extension! Hubbys UI benefits will run out in June and I have no idea what we will do then! Bush is going to cause a lot of people to loose their houses and everything in life they have worked so hard for. Can't believe my life has come to this, begging my government for help. I lost my job due to a back injury. I am willing to work, but no one seems interested in an employee w/restrictions. My benefits are almost over. I have no idea how my family will survive. Being a nurse, I never thought i would have trouble finding a job. The depression is overwhelming.

I already lost two jobs this year and prior to that I stayed with companies on average of 2.5 years. My last job didn't employ me long enough to even establish eligibilty for unemployment and now i have two weeks left. Most emergency type jobs tell me I am overqualified...I guess I will have to start living in a van down by the river or a refridgerator box. Maybe I will eat trash or something. idk. I guess the senators and such don't have to worry about getting let go since they can already give themselves raises. please pass this bill!

I'll bet the number of jobs being created in this economy today isn't even close to the number of jobs U.S. corporations are giving away to foreign countries. so sad that our gov't can't/won't even figure out how to solve our ongoing health care crisis. but, u.s companies make sure those cheap wage foreign employees are taken care of and with health benefits too. why doesn't the gov't just hold a huge u.s. auction house for foreigner's to come and buy up our foreclosed homes too. They could call it the "orient express american sellout" Maybe I can get a job cleaning houses for one of our brilliant government leaders or for some foreigner who has bought out a troubled u.s. business. My unemployment has run out and after sending out over 100 resumes across 3 states I still can't find a job. I had to leave California and move to Navada to come and live with my daughter. If it wasn't for her I would be living on the streets. I have never faced such a hard time of trying to find work and I have been in my career field for 27 years. I heard on the news that sales of high ticketed items are booming and sales have never been better because all the weathy people are out shopping and buying everthing up. Its disturbing and supportive to see other people having the same struggles like myself. I am disgusted by the comments of those who got on here and berated us all for being whining babies. I was not only abruptly laid off in August of 2007, I was never given my final paycheck from the company I worked for. Who plans for that??? The corporation filed Chapter 11 and employees were put in line with the banks...guess who gets paid first, if ever. It is so discouraging waking up every morning and sending out resumes to everyone and their mother and never getting a call. Its also embarassing every time you see someone and they ask, "any luck?". The answer is always the same..."No." Really puts your self-worth into check. I will not rely on my government to find me a job, if they no longer require me to pay their salaries with my taxes. I am an American citizen born and raised here in this country. I have worked most of my life and payed taxes and have payed my fare share of taxes including taxes on my unemployment. I was layed off my job back in October and despite all of my efforts to find a new job I have had no luck and now my unemployment has run out and I feel totally abandoned by my own goverment. Feeling Abandoned
I never realized how much control other people have over us. I use to think and believe that I controlled my own destiny. I had a great job with great pay and I felt in-control and was happy with my life, than your boss calls you into his office and says we have to lay you off because of a slowdown at work and you try to find another job but its the same story everywhere you go and six months later your unemployment is gone and more and more people are losing their jobs and now we have to beg our goverment to give us an extention. Where is God? because He sure as hell isn't in the Whitehouse!

They also asked how to pay taxes and Jesus found a coin in fish's mouth. This is for those who believe and know Him. I'm hungry too and must rely on His provision day by day. I'm surrendering my house this month. Really, I didn't see it months ago, but now see it is really a blessing. My husband died two months before I lost my job. I have a teenage son. I truly have empathy with you as I have been out of work for nine months now and have no money. I have to file bankruptcy this week. Thank God I have a sister and we’re moving in with her this weekend. She has a large house and empty garage for my furniture and boxes (if they don’t take them away in bankruptcy). She said she will include us in her meals. Leaving the house is like saying good-bye to my husband all over again. I hurt. Sometimes we move, other times we are moved (by God). WASHINGTON — Protests from moderate Democrats and a revolt by opposition Republicans prompted House Democratic leaders Wednesday night to delay a planned vote on a $195 billion measure to pay for the war in Iraq and provide education help to veterans as well as RELIEF FOR THE JOBLESS.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., promised to deal with the concerns of some of her more conservative members, who were upset that the war funding bill is carrying new benefit programs — especially a boost in GI education benefits — without paying for them with offsetting cuts to other programs.

I live in a town of 5000 and every day someone is losing there job we have over 90 vacant home from foreclourse. This bill needs to pass. We are living in bad times, folks. Unemployment is high, gas is $4 a gallon and no relief in sight. I worked for a large corporation for 3 years, only to be lost in the transition when a Saudi Arabian company bought us out. I have been out of work for 6 months, and been attending college full-time to try to finish my degree. It is a horrible situation when we worry more about foreign aid than we do about our own. Something needs to be done, or I fear that there will be a revolution in this country. People are fed up with the way this nation is going, and if something doesn't happen soon our economy will collapse. S2544 needs to be passed to help those that have lost everything due to the situation in this country. WASHINGTON: Start helping our own and quit being the world's savior. I agree this bill needs to pass. My husband got laid off a year ago, I got let go from my job in October, they were both great paying jobs. My husband found a job for 7.50 and hour, and I am still not able to find a job, my unemployment has ended. We have both worked our whole lives, never been unemployed! But with the economy the way it is, no one is safe, companies are closing down left and right, and no one is hiring. I am completely lost, I don't know what we will do without this extension. We have 3 young children and everyone knows that 7.50 an hr isn't going to pay the rent, utilities, buy food or clothing and pay for gas to get back and forth to work. I've been reviewing the congressional home page for weeks now and Nancy Peloski brings up extending the UI benefits often but with little support from Congress. What will it take for Congress to step up to the plate and pass the very much needed extension. Listen people extention of benefits is not high on the list in congress. Pelosi has it on the list as item 380 something. She attached it to war funding bill which will be vetoed and she knew it. Congress does not care unless we make them. Everyone of those representatives are up for election this year and there are over 4 mil. of us out of work. So write letters and make phone calls until they are tired of hearing from us and do something. Make a pain out of yourself and be sure to remind them you will vote in November because you may not have much else to do. MAKE THEM LISTEN.

Not to belabor the fact that soooo many people my age (50+) are still looking for a job after a year, but it actually makes me feel much, much better about my situation. Misery loves company! I was fortunate to have 8 months of severance pay, and after taking off the summer, started looking in 9/07. I started receiving unemployment in January, and I really hope that this bill is passed. I am now looking again for a job (did a 6 week stint as an insurance agent), but like it was said before, one look at my resume, and I'm too old and overqualified.
So yes, PASS THIS BILL NOW, now three months down the road when I may have to foreclose on my house!!!

When will they see that the people are hurting. I've applied for over 800 jobs at this point since I've been on unemployment with no luck. I'm underqualified for most and over qualified for others. My unemployment ran out and because I receive $75 a week in child support, I do not qualify for Welfare. What about the American people that elect these politicians that are making a ton of money and can't even pass a bill that will help their own.

Please I am 48 years old and have worked all my life. I cannot find a job and my unemployment runs out in two weeks. I have a family. The stress of not finding a job is getting to be too much. Now finding out I will have no unemployment benefits left with no job is getting to be an unbearable burden. Per Foxnews.com, this bill passed the house today. It will allow 13 wks extension nationwide and an addtl 13 wks to states that unemployment rate is 6% or greater. Good news for now,,,but it still has to go thru Bush & since the money isn't going to benefit Iraq, I doubt he will allow it to pass!! I think we will probably have to wait for his vote since I've seen on the news he is galavanting around the world on our dollar!

Is it true what I have been hearing and reading the bill has been REJECTED!!, Please, please tell me I am wrong. We are in DIRE STRAIGHTS right now. I can all about afford ONE gallon of gas in the car to get to the store to buy some Mac & Cheese for the family. My stress-level is OVER the top with worry as to how in the world we are going to get by with all my Unemployment benefits GONE.
