After all the fraud & waste reported by Iraq on 60 minutes this weekend,Bush & Cheney are shameful in their hurry to bankrupt this country.Meanwhile their corporate cronies feed at the public troff while denying hard working Americans benefits because of the economy they massacred.God save us all.JP

pls.pass this bill or give me a job
Kinda Desparate
13 weeks won't help much but it's better than nothing! Do it!! Considering I've got 2 college degrees and years of diverse work experience, I'm not even having luck finding a minimum wage job. I've been off now nearly a year and have exhausted my IRA in order to keep my house - and have had to pay a significant amount in penalties just to keep my house and health insurance. What's wrong with this picture?
Out of Luck & Time
Please Hurry, I've been going through the process for Border Patrol Agent (Taken over 4 months), qualified in every way except I've been late on a few bills due to unemployment. Now my caracter is in question and the BP says they only want folks with good fiscal responsibility. Too bad our polititians didn't have the same requirements. 13 weeks WILL make a difference in my families lives. Please hurry and pass this legislation!!!!

the problem with unemployment statistics is this, as soon as your benefits aare depleted you are no longer counted. what most people want are jobs, since there are none to be had, give them their 13 weeks extension, especially in NJ we are begging you for help!!
House ways and means!!!!!
Passed on 4/15/2008, BUT like that foolish tax "rebate", a discussion for another time, is NOT set to be enacted until June 1, 2008. BUT here is what they say the bill is SUPPOSED to do,
* Immediately provide up to 13 weeks of extended unemployment benefits in every State.
Since when was 2 months "Immediate"???? Nonetheless, Thank you Ways and Means......let's keep our fingers crossed the Senate doesn't shoot it down AGAIN by one vote.
And Mr Doyle, very well put, those of us without UI and no longer unemployed by thier standards, we are SOL

Unemployed in CA
I've been job hunting since Aug '07. Hundreds of applications with no results It's so stressful. I keep running things through my head, what am I going to pay first, if at, all, hope the people I interviewed with call me. Hope I get an interview..period!! I am trying my best to find employment. Please pass this bill ASAP....Emergency doesn't mean June 1st.....It's NOW!!!!
Hanging on by skin of teeth
I gave up on looking for a job. I could not get anything. I resorted to starting a business but that is taking time to get started. I need more time to get things going so I can pay bills with the money I am hoping to get from this endeavor. Thank you for all your help. This is a very tough time.
Out of Work in WA State
The middle class is getting trampled. Job shrinkage, lower-wage jobs to replace what we had as careers. We need this bill passed now! UI extension of benefits should have happened in January with the Stimulus Bill. It is apparent that Bush has distain for the average, hard-working American and favors only the super rich. Please Congress respond!
Losing it ALL!
Leaders of our country,
What to the words EMERGENCY EXTENSION mean to you? People in America are BEGGING for help from a fund that they themselves PAID INTO! Emergency, or 911, means NOW! Please pass this bill before it's too late for us!
Out of Work North Tx
PLEASE PASS EXTENSION BENIFITS!
ALL HARD WORKING AMERICANS ARE AT RISK!!!!
Homeowner, three small children and years of professional work experience....Unemployment ran out 2 weeks ago. How will i pay my mortgage now.
Responsible American
You all are a bunch of whiners. I bet the Framers--Adams, Jefferson, Franklin, would look upon you all with contempt and total disgust. Government is NOT DADDY! Why were you living beyond your means to begin with, and not saving money, planning ahead for any possibility? Especially if you have kids! To put your kids in danger like that, is irresponsible. You are pathetic. If you can't find work where you are, move. Time to mail in those keys to that house you couldn't afford to begin with, and rent elsewhere. "Give you a job?" HA. You go FIND a job. You'll get nowhere with that victim entitlement mentality.

moon
i did see possible date of 6/1 for enactment in the financials of the program. I googled enactment of bill HR5749. I've worked 26 years at one location and I am having a very difficult time finding a good job or for that matter any job to get me by

Who's kidding who with our money?

I have been unemployed now for 6 months and my benefits are exhausted. I am an educated, middle aged woman in NJ, never needed benefits in my life until now. I need this extension NOW because companies are not hiring, you hear me? NOT HIRING!!! What is it going to take for our Administration to take notice? When they see families living on the streets? This is a scary mess for all of us!
Mary
JUNE 1ST Does NOT cut it! I have to pay my mortgage NOW!
jobless in WA
I see they have shut down the open congress site. The uneployed will prevail. move to this site, their even blocking this one!
Lisa
I have been out of work for 16 months, and have never had a problem finding a job. I was in construction related industry, and even though I can do other things, I still can not find a job. For each 100 jobs applied for, I may get 1 interview, with 100 others applying for the same job. Yes, we need this benefit and now!!!!! Is this true that it will not be voted on until June 1????

HR5769 needs to discussed now! This is an emergency for all the American people who have worked and paid into this. Step away from your fancy cars and nice desks to sit at without a worry. Come out here in the real world and put our shoes on and walk in them for a day. I'm sure you'd feel what it is like then! Just awful we are always last when it comes to things of importance. This needs to be addressed NOW! People can't wait till JUNE??? What is wrong with our country? It's very sad people wait years for help with disability claims, no health insurance? Then after you work your entire life and need help---NO ONE IS LISTENING!!

I as well need this extension. I have not worked since 09/2007. I am able, willing and seeking work here in Michigan, outside Detroit. My benefits are exhausted. I am 45 years old and never drew unemployment until Sept/2007. I have always worked and paid my taxes fairly. I am very worried if this bill will not pass. I have sold most I own on C.L. It is expensive just seeking work, Insurance for car and gas basically took half of my benefits when I had them. Hundreds of resumes, very few interviews...many hundreds of emails to job sites...all to only still be unemployed.
Please pass this bill!
hurting in NJ
This bill need to be pass now, I have worked 43 years always suppported myself. I was laid off in September, my benefits have been exhausted., looking desperately for work to no avail. there are not even temp jobs. I can not believe the governemnt are not helping the unemployed and looking the other way. Please help us.

Adios car. Nice to have spent so much time with you house. I only wish my kids didn't have to see their father crying.

It was McCain's single vote that defeated the passing of S 4522 in the Stimulus Package...
Button-down people, things are only going to get worse because of dildo Bush and his theiving cronies...
They're all 'set for life.' We are disposable in their eyes...
In God We Trust
Please don't wait to June to enact the extension of unemployment compensation. Emergency means NOW!
Concerned American
You need to act one unemployment benefits now. This issue is far more important than the ones on the agenda. We're talking about putting American familys on the street and not being able to pay there bills and let alone buy food to survive. Also with gas prices so out of reach how can you afford to buy gas to go and apply for a job. You know as I do most people have to live pay check to pay check! This is cruel and devastating. Help the American People!
lisa
I have been unemploye for 4 months now. well, when my unemployment runs out, I will be living in my car. please pass this! now! why are they waiting? we need to pay our bills and eat. I wont be buying anything my 600.00 check that most of us will be receiving in may. mine will go on bills. pass this!
James
This is the 'beginning of the end' and all we have feared for years is now upon us:
One World Government
One Currency
NO JOBS, period, because they've all been out-sourced by the Republican/Conservatives for 30 years now and because of Wal-Mart
An 'incarcerated' Police State
The middle-class sucked-down into poverty so their former wealth goes to the upper-class
Unaffordable gas...NO FOOD!
China now manufactures 75% of the world's goods! Russia has no debt! China is drilling for oil 50 miles off-shore from Key West!
The USA will be a 3rd World Country shortly, as planned by the Bushes, Chaney, and 'MR. OXYCONTIN' himself, Rush Limbaugh...oh yeah, he 'bought his way out of that' too, didn't he???
Are you all glad you voted the Bushes & Chaney into office? And they say the terrorists are in the Middle East!
And it was McCain's SINGLE VOTE that prevented S 2544 from being part of the 'Stimulus Package!'
H.R. 5749 is unconstutional
The only way the goverment can give is if they steal it from someone elce. I don't need to pay more for unemployment. HR 5749 and all bills like this one are bad for AMerica. We don't need a hand out from King George. What we need is a hand up and this bill is a hand out.... If the so called elected leaders want to help Americans unemployed, charge the incomming good from the forgine nations a tariff and stop the goverment programs funded by my stolen tax dollar that help American Ind to move to forgine nations. Stop giving subs to the oil producers not to pump oil... Let the fair market in America work for America and put America 1st instead of worry so much about Mexico and africa.. FOlks write you leaders and tell them to screw there goverment programs..
give me large goverment control. We need another goverment program.
We as Americans are not able to manage our own lives and need the goverment to control it.. Give us King George.. Give us a hand out.. I need my rations this week
Please Help Americas Unemployed Truckers
I don't need to pay more for unemployment. HR 5749 and all bills like this one are bad for AMerica. We don't need a hand out from King George. What we need is a hand up and this bill is a hand out. Let the fair market in America work for America and put America 1st .We don't need any more hand outs from King George, we need a hand up. We don't need our rations.I am a trucker and this fuel price has got me down so bad, What do I do, I say in my mind? I cut fire wood to make ends meet untill the FAIR market works it's self out. Please no more goverment hand outs, I don't want rations. I want to work , Trucking has got more regulation than anything I elce I know about and the regulation needs to be adjusted if nothing elce can be done.Help American truckers give, us a hand up and not a hand out.Legislation like S. 2910, the "Trust in Reliable Understanding of Consumer Costs Act is a hand up . Please support this important bill

RJ, if you go back to the article you are referring to, you will see that it has passed through the committee but has not yet gone anywhere else yet. It has to go to the full house

I have a degree and have been employed in the homebuilding industry for 20 years. Last October my pay and hours were cut until the company closed its doors for good in January this year. I have been unsuccessful in finding any kind of a job with liveable wages or reasonable opportunity for growth. I had, with foresight, saved for this eventuality, but will have exhausted all my resources this month. I will take a job at $9.00 as a last resort. and I am working towards beginning a homebased business. I just need a little more time.
ED
We should all share with everyone whats on tap for dinner 2 nite, lets see while the prez and his cronies are chowing down on steak and tail 2nite, i am having grilled processed american cheeze,on 2 day old bread from the thrift store, and real tomato soup, and i will only get what my daughter doesnt eat,and i will be losing my internet soon, so good luck to all of us, god bless
hey Ed
"Real tomato soup" sounds wonderful! Can you send the recipe? Maybe we're all meant to be where we are for now so we can experience new things that we wouldn't have appreciated before. I understand, though.......I am there.
Larry
We need our rations, please support this great bill to help the American worker. We need a larger, stronger goverment so they can give us better programs and better rations
Darrell
I've been out of work since the company I was working for was closed last year. Through no fault of my own I have been unable to find work of any kind. Now with my benefits exhausted and my bank acount drained I can no longer afford to drive to an interview, let alone eat or afford the basics of life. I cannot wait a month and a half to get extended benefits. By the time they come through (if they come through) I will have died from starvation. Yeah I know I can go to a food bank, but without the gas to get there...This is a supposed to be a government of the people, by the people and for the people...apparently the people in government don't give a damn about the people they are supposed to represent...We needed this yesterday...for me it's too late...I wonder if they realize just how bad off the people really are or if they even care!!! We can help the people in the rest of the world...it's time to help those of us here at home!!!
Me
Dependency on government is the antithesis of Freedom.
To: Darrell
Government is of the people, for the people, and by the people. It just doesn't mean government has to feed you. That's your own responsibility. The founding fathers gave you the freedom to live your life the way you choose. You make your own destiny. They would never in a million years have designed a government to feed you. It's hard, especially when you get brainwashed into a victim/entitlement mentality, but you have to get up, wipe your nose, dust your jeans off, and try again. If you depend on government, you will fail EVERY time.
Chris
Responsible American
You all are a bunch of whiners. I bet the Framers--Adams, Jefferson, Franklin, would look upon you all with contempt and total disgust. Government is NOT DADDY! Why were you living beyond your means to begin with, and not saving money, planning ahead for any possibility? Especially if you have kids! To put your kids in danger like that, is irresponsible. You are pathetic. I
---------------------------------
I suppose you are one of those elitist responsible people who agrees with wasting billions onwarmongering for no purpose and grafting out no bid contracts that do nothing at all for the American people who are told to 'eat cake' in New orleans and elsewhere -just send it all to Cheney's Buddies and the jobs to China -whilst the rest worry sick where and how they are going to live. You and your ilk are disgusting and have ruined this once great country.
Dave
Government is of the people, for the people, and by the people. It just doesn't mean government has to feed you. That's your own responsibility.
-----------------------------------
Does that apply to the billions taken away from 'the people by the people' who were elected and are nicely paid by us to serve our better interests or theres I wonder.
I am really begginning to dislike these 'I'me all right(ous) Jacks' !!
Joe in NY
Shame on you, Chris. You are an embarrassment to those of us who may be as lucky as you but have never walked in anyone else's shoes.
Not Economicly Viable
Responsible American- I bet the framers didn't count on our goverment to sell out our jobs to other countries either. And the jobs that they are trying to replace them with are insufficient income to support a family(i.e Walmart,McDonald's,ect)
Hmm.
Government isnt outsourcing jobs. Private businesses are.
ed
I dont understand why the employed people are even posting on this site, the only thing i can think of is that they enjoy watching other people in misery, like our leaders, they dont think that the goverment should help out,let me ask them something, are they goin to cash their economic stimulis check, because that is accepting help,so all you high and mighty people lucky enough to be working and have food on the table, return your stimulis checks hot shots, then come on this site and talk sh*t about not receiving help from the govt
James
Chris: You're a LOSER, and a COWARD! MANY posters were NOT "living beyond their means," and are responsible tax-paying parents who CANNOT FIND A JOB, any job, because there are NO JOBS available.
Bush's Unemployment figures CONVENIENTLY do NOT include tax payers & constituents who's Unemployment Compensation has run-out and they still CAN'T FIND A JOB.
Bush's Unemployment Rate is more like 10%, and that is his legacy that will go down in history - WORSE UNEMPLOYMENT THAN JIMMY CARTER!
Bush's 'Fairy Tale War' costs us $275,000,000.00 a day, and the oil companies just reported RECORD PROFITS as a result of SCREWING US @ the gas pumps!
YOU are a "PATHETIC" INSIGNIFICANT COWARD Chris.
I'll bet you get your ass kicked every time you spout your BULLSH*T in public, and rightfully so!
Laid off in PA
Ditto, James. I wonder if Chris even knows that we are paying taxes on unemploymnent compensation. He does seem to be a little uneducated.
To those ingnorant enough not to know the difference -
Unemploymnent Insurance is exactly that - INSURANCE into which both employers and employees (depending on the state) have paid into DURING THE EMPLOYEES' WORKING LIVES to provide for hard times when they have been laid off for reasons NOT CAUSED BY THEM. If they are responsible for the layoff, they are not eligible for unemployment benefits. The extension would not be a government "handout", merely a guarantee to extend the six months of INSURANCE BENEFITS they are entitled to receive for a few more weeks to hold them over. I am a 62-year old woman who has worked her whole life who was one of the thousands of people laid off by Bank of America and other financial institutions. How dare you try to make me feel worse than I already do? If you are working and have time to post to this blog, perhaps you are one of the lazy asses who are on the internet on their jobs while they should be working! I'll keep trying to get a job - but you should go get a life!
James
BRAVO to the above!!!
Debbie
unemployment is very high and people are running out of benifit's nd are struggling to survive extensions should ne given NOW before people start killing , stealing ETC.. just to have food to eat and a place to sleep Approve unemployment extension's now before thing's get out of control before long their won't be a middle class family it will be Poor people and Rich People but the poor will be the ones struggling and the rich will be warm and have food to eat with gas prices the way they are how are people supposed to look for a job with no money to put in there car's or money to insure them besides that there is'nt any jobs in michigan unless you are a person with a degree and those are scarce also.
Debbie, MIchigan
Cris i agree with James these people that are leaving comment's are more than likely hard working citizens that have lost there job's because they have been shipped out of the country or have just closed down it is really Rude of you to make any judgement's of these people when you have no idea of anyone's situation you are right the goverment is'nt our Daddy BUT THEY ARE MOST OF THE BLAME FOR OUR COUNTRY'S PROBLEMS and as far as you go i have no idea what situation you are in but most people do plan ahead but sometimes thing's happen beyond a person's control and THESE PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO KEEP THERE KID'S SAFE but with no job's out there they need a little more unemployment benifit's to get by and most of these people have worked hard and deserve the help during these hard time's but since you sound like you have everything in control finacially I pray that you don't eat your ignorant comment.
lisa

American Workers have paid into the unemployment insurance system all of their lives. It is unconscionable to deny them the their rights and benefits they need and deserve."
Congress has a fundamental choice that will significantly influence the nation’s economy and these struggling families—whether to further delay extending jobless benefits, thus causing more economic hardship, or act now to provide the economic boost that the unemployment system was intended to deliver to prevent a more serious economic downturn.
Extended jobless benefits immediately boost the economy (by a factor of $2.15 for every dollar of benefits circulating), while also providing targeted relief to struggling homeowners and those communities hardest hit by the foreclosure crisis.

I noticed the open congress site will not come up anymore. The front page came up but no comments. Anyway, there is an article on the front page that states that congress wants to attach the UI extensions onto the war spending bill but are not very enthusiastic. I call for my last check tommorrow. With the cost of gas and food the numbers are much worse since they gave out the last extensions three years ago.
George Bush Jr. Be like your father!
BUSH SR. gave unemployment extensions during his presidency...It's only right for Bush Jr.-George to do the same...or defenitely he will go down in history as the worst president ever!...and by the way his daughter is getting married this weekend, so he needs to sign the bill so positive energies be at the wedding.

Ruth/No Open Doors
Unemployed since October 2007 -- Hundreds of resumes sent out with no response. Doors are continously closing on my face. This situation is hitting the very core of the American Family... desintegrating because of this! The focus needs to be NOW -- much damage has already been done but the attention needs to be turned around and save some families from total disaster!! Please pass this legislation NOW--You CANNOT wait any longer--and we can't either!!
Over Syndrome
I never thought I would see this happen. Sending out resumes over and over only to hear, " Your over qualified. Or, "this job requires a lot of Overtime" when what they are really trying to say is "your over 65, over grey, and over weight."
Now, I find myself without a job, Over extending my unemployment and not yet Over the hump to where I can collect a full Social Security Benefit.
I AM JUST OVER IT! The lease you folks could do is pass this legislation NOW!!! To help folks out who are truely trying to seek employment. With the prices of food and gas and the economy the way it is now, I can't afford to continue to look for a job. What am I to do?
Tony/No luck in Florida
I have been unemployed since 09/07. I have lived in Florida all my life. I have two 3 ring binders that have all the jobs that I have applied too. Yes our government needs to pass the bill 5749. For all of you that are working and are on this site, "GET OFF". Go to your site, "How to screw the people who want to work hard but can't" Oh, thats right, your not "unemployed". To the rest of us, we need to fight for this. I say that if this not passed that we as unemployed Americans, start a campaign to not vote for anyone, let's see how the rich feel about that.

I've been laid off since 12/07-sENT WELL OVER 100 APPLICATIONS 4 CALL BACKS & NO OFFERS?My U/E benefits are about to run out & I dont know what I'm going to do? This bill would at least give me a few more weeks to try to find work & it will stimulate the economy!! Please help the American people!!!

How long does it take for the Government to make a decision to pass an EMERGENCY Unemployment extension. "Emergency" to me, has always meant NOW, IMMEDIATELY, TODAY - Not to sit back and wait for the "fire" to get bigger and larger. I can only say a prayer that the extension is passed and for the many THOUSANDS & THOUSANDS that struggle everyday to make what little we have left to feed our families, put a roof over our heads, and put gas in cars.
Bush - Do the right thing and pass this law - TODAY.
To Concerned American and Others
While I am in favor of passing the proposed emergency unemployment act, it concerns me that comments like yours, which are incorrect and misleading, will hurt the credibility of the rest of us who understand and try to correctly articulate the case for unemployment extension. While it is a fact that EMPLOYERS pay into their state funds (which are state-federal initiatives) each state is different with respect to what it withholds from EMPLOYEE paychecks. Most states do no require that employees pay into the fund. It is my understanding that with the excepton Alaska and NJ, employees are not required to pay into the fund. In other other states it is an employer's option as to whether the cost is shared with the employee. Perhaps you live in NJ and don't know that the laws are different from state to state. I would advise everyone to check out the facts before they state them as such.
Desperate in WA state
An emergency that has been going on way too long. How can these feet dragging politicians sleep at night? It's (too put in a senators words during the W&M hearing) UNCONSCIONABLE! And the numbers of unemployed, with or without benefits is in the MILLIONS.

ToConcerned americans and others. You may be correct about who pays and who doesn't however we are AMERICANS and deserve as much help as all the people that aren't americans get. We send money everywhere and it is time to help those who have, in the past ,been able to help themselvs but are now hanging on by a thread.

I for am consumed with searching every available website to find out what the status is regarding HR 5749, as I am sure millions are as well. As I sit here - unemployed, with all my unemployment benefits exhausted. I hope that Bush had a wonderful, fabulous time at his daughters weddings - as the rest of the millions unemployed try to put a gallon a gas in our car at $4.00 a gallon, with milk at $4.00 a gallon as well. I can barely afford paper products and laundry aids, let along putting some real food on the table. I can not even imagine as to what does through BUSH's head as to why he has not signed this bills, allowing us to have the meager daily life needs. Our lives in on HOLD until BUSH decides to sign that bill. My gosh - how does it take to realize the American people are in dire straights.

I don't want an extention, just a job!.. My benifits have run out. Please pass this bill or bring in jobs!

Is it true what I have been reading and hearing that HR5749 was REJECTED. Please, please tell me I am wrong. I am living on a prayer that this will pass.

Well, if you have read my postings you know I have lost everything. Over the weekend I packed my car and headed to IN, to live with my children. I am 56, worked all my life, raised my children on my own and now I have lost everything. Anyways, just wanted to post that as I was crossing into OK, there are huge signs at the beginning of the turnpike - HIRING Toll Collectors, great pay, great benefits. Just wanted to let you know in case someone is interested.

I guess you're considered a humanitarian when you send millions of dollars to other countries to help them out but when is the Gov't going to look after it's own people? Was laid off last summer in the automotive field and have had a couple temp jobs here and there but the benefits ae now out. I would love to take the advice of all these geniouses on here and go get a job but I am a single parent with joint custody of my kids so leaving the state realy isn't an option. No, job, no unemployment equalx no income at all. And I also have just been informed I need to find a new place to live but who will rent to somebody with no income? This bill is a necessity for the American people!
I heard it will get vetoed by Bush because of the Iraq funding agenda attached to this bill. Get our soldiers out of there and we won't have to fund the war on oil!
Unstimulated
I have been unemployed for 7 months now, and I want a job more than anything but in the meantime I need this bill to pass. The stimulus checks that everyone who filed taxes will get is not going to help us who have run out of unemployment, and besides the stimulus money is going to the rich as well. I want to know where this stimulus money is coming from? maybe it is coming from our extended unemployment benifits and that is why the bill hasn't passed.
Jobless in CT
Kudos to Sen Kennedy for realizing what the others on Capital Hill should have realized. I have been out of work for 7 months as well and will exhaust my benefits this week. I've no clue HOW I am going to survive with NO job, NO $$ and soon, NO place to live. The bank account is almost cleaned out and afraid I'll be left on the streets. The WONDERFUL STIMULUS monies that was to be THE fix for the nation did nothing for me except pay my utilities that were on the verge of getting shut off and put gas in my car so I could get around to interview. I am SICK to death that we have to BEG for help from our government when the government is the first to drop loads of monies into some other nations economy for something stupid. WE NEED TO CONTACT OUR CONGRESS PERSONS AND LET OUR VOICES BE HEARD!

Unemployed in Ohio
My husband was laid off from his job 5 months ago. He worked for a home builder for 30+ years. Who in this country can afford to build a house with rising gas and food prices and the loss of jobs. There are no jobs out there for him. We have worked all our lives and are very proud people. But we need help so please pass this bill!!
Deaf James
I have been unemployed since December. However, I was fired for reasons other than what my employer stated. I am deaf and he just didn't want to be bothered with helping me keep my job under the Americans with Disabilities Act. I have been looking for work like all of you, and it is extra hard for a disabled person to get work. I have considered telling the American Workplace to kiss off and start my own in-house business selling gardening and small farm equipment and supplies. I feel that we will all be needing this type of stuff when it gets really bad and we all have to grow our own food. I could go on disability but I want to keep working. Good Luck to you all and I hope you all find good jobs. I also hope we all get the unemployment extension too.

Thank you very much for the information. I have checked out the site and find it very useful, (unlike this site that has completely dropped the ball.)
VERY CONCERNED
From what I have been reading regarding the the passing of this bill. Only States with an Unemployment rate of 6 % or higher would be helped. According to The Cleveland Plain Dealer article in yesterdays paper. Only a very small-handfull of States are at 6%. Where in the heck does it leave the rest of us. If anyone has any additional information, please let us all know.
Now what!!!
The morning News shows are already indicating that the Bill will NOT be passed by the Senate. Funds will be used to fund the war - We are being left "high and dry"!!!

Senate Approves $165 Billion In New War Money
Check out the New York Times/US/Politics, it just listed this 14 minutes ago.
Anthony M Palumbo
To very concerned,
The bill states that all states will get a 13 week extension, those with 6% unemployment would recieve another 13 weeks. To learn more about the bill go to any website that shows the text.
Regarding - To the comment to very concerned
Does this mean that States with less than a 6% unemployment rate - NOT be included with this extension?? What happens to all the rest of us - that have a lower % rate? Will we be left out. According to some news reports, only a VERY small portion of State (like 6) are at 6%.
Lisa
Now I hear that the extension has passed through the senate, now it has to go back to the house so Bush can't veto it. Why would he veto this, that is crazy.
To "Very Concerned" and Others
You are giving those of us who are unemployed a reputation - that of being STUPID! Please stop posting dumb comments without finding out what's really what. You might try unemployedworkers.com to get a better handle on what's going on - i.e. that under the bill all states would benefit, although those with high unemployment rates may get longer extensions. When anti-extension folks see comments like yours, as well as nasty notes with misspellings and bad language, they group us together and use that against us, which hurts us all in the end.

When is this extension supposed to take effect?? Can't be soon enough for me.
To Tracy
It certainly can't take until it passes! It will go to the House after recess and Bush can still veto if it doesn't pass the House by a high enough margin.

Does anyone actually know if it is to be considered on June 1st? Andwhat the feel of it is...maybe we need to have the media pressure a few people for some answers! Just a thought..

I just recieved from the state that my benefits ran out!! I'm glad that bill passed in congress, please Pres. Bush sign the bill. I have a young family of 2 boys and I know with the economy as it is right now we are not going to make it on just one income like we used to. What am I supposed to do if the extention gets approved by Bush?? Will the state take care of it? I am a 13 1/2 yr preschool teacher veteran and I need unemployment checks till I can find a job. These checks have helped as a second income basically now I'm out.

My name is Craig and I'm a Michigan statistic. I've been unemployed since the company I worked for went out of business last August. I have since sent out over 400 job applications and to this date have only had two call backs. I've even tried applying for a part-time job at Wal-Mart and had to compete against 542 other applicants. I ask that you approve the bill to help those like me and in worse situations than me.
to C-Rod
We all understand your dilemma but it is not up to us to approve the bill so you are preaching to hte choir. Most of us on this site are just unemployed folks, just like you. You need to write to your congressperson to make your voice heard. See unemployedworkers.com for more info.

I wonder when the house is back in session if this will be one of the first bills that they will look at. I hope so, if not I will be homeless. This is so crazy, can't everyone see that this is truly and emergency, and that people are going to be out on the streets. It is heading for conditions like in the great depression. It is very sad that this bill has to go back to the house because they are afraid that Bush will veto it. Shame on you President Bush, I am sure if it was your friends or family in this kind of predicament this bill would have been passed through a long time ago. Please pass this bill, I have always worked hard and have never depended on anyone for anything in my life, so now I have to beg. HOW SAD THAT IS!!!!
TO FLORENCE
I know I am in the same kind of predicament. I will be out on the streets too soon if this bill doesn't pass. My unemployment ran out 3 months ago and I still can't find a job. Sent out 200 resumes, got 1 interview, along with 125 others. Someone needs to help us before it's too late.
Paul
Good news for us the bill passed the senate by a wide majority and is now back in congress. I think they will pass a veto proof vote and Bush will not be a factor. The congress will be looking at maybe even voting again this week, the 1st week in June 2008. Contact your congress men/women and make sure they are on the right side. I have lost everything now.. been out of work since Sept07 and I do not have anything left. I am homeless now, my money ran out in April and I could not pay my bills. Only the kindness of friends has stopped me from welfare and going hungry. God Bless
Unemployed in Florida
I understand that we all need help. we just have to hang in there, I believe congress will do the right thing. Let me tell you what happened to me today, two weeks ago I submitted an application for employment at the RV park for a maintenance position. Today I get a call that says they hired someone with more experience. I saw him the park manager he is almost twice my age (I am 44). This is why we can't get jobs. Us baby boomers are out of luck against getting jobs as the retirees are getting hired (Gee, I thought they got retirement and social security). At this rate the rest of us won't get either. Unemployed and applying for jobs and not being selected for the position is everywhere. I know some of you out there our older adults working and looking for a job (parttime/fulltime). This hits all of us. You cannot live just on social security. We all need this bill passed asap. By the way the job I applied for was three times less then what I was making before I was Laid-off.
In WI 2 young kids and hurting BADLY
I was laid off last year..worked a seasonal job over Christmas to try to pay bills and feed my family. Got laid off once again after Christmas. I have been getting unemployment and looking every day for work ever since. I had a couple interviews-no job offers. I am college educated, always had at least one job. I had THREE jobs while in college. Now I can't find a job to save my life. Thankfully my husband is still employed but was told on Monday to expect a layoff sometime this month. Then what??????? We NEED jobs, the extension will help but what I want most is a job!!!!!
THERE ARE NO GOOD JOBS IN ILLINOIS
I am a middle aged mom of 2 kids. I got laid off my construction job and have been unemployed for over 7 months now. The unfortunate truth is good jobs don't exist here anymore. I went on interviews but the job offers paid 30% to 40% less then I was previously making, and without benefits. I held out thinking I could get a good paying job but it STILL has not happened. I am really hurting and can't believe the DEMOCRATS are turning their back on us by trying not to include H.R.5749 into the Iraqi War Funding bill. How can DEMOCRATS turn their backs on us like this? The Senate approved the unemployment extension with a veto less majority. What is up with this Congress that they can't help their own people, we are the ones who need it most?????
UNEMPLOYMENT RATES ARE INACCURATE
State unemployment rates are not accurate because they do not include those of us who have exhausted benefits after 6 months. According to statistics on the Unemployedworkers.org site there are over 4,000,000 people who have exhausted their benefits and we are not being counted. Go to opencongress.org , click on H.R.5749. There are over 11,100 comments about H.R. 5749. One thing these politicians may want to keep in mind, is we are 4,000,000 strong and we are watching C-span and watching who votes on this bill.

What is the problem? Why not extend the unemployment benefits? It's sad when you can't even get a job a fast food restaurant. I guess everyone will need to be homeless before anything is done. We need to have the unemployment benefits extended...NOW!!!

This Bill is in DIRE NEED of being passed ASAP. It seems like we are all in the same situation here ane need money for housing and food. It astonishes me that every morning when I seek unemployment, I find the Classifed Section of my paper empty. If everyone pitched in and called their Representative for their area or their Senator (easy to find on the net), and left a message in support of extending unemployment benefits, we might have a good chance at seeing this through. Today, I had a very polite conversation with Senator Casey's secretary (PA.) on Capitol Hill, and I plan on calling back every other day to see how this Bill is moving along. Our voices need to be heard!

It would be a mistake not to extend unemployment benefits, (1) It will keep monies flowing within the system, which is needed to help people to continue to pay mortgages, buy food, pay bills, etc. (2) If the extension takes effect soon benefit payouts will be added to 2009 income tax gross, which will increase the amount the of tax the IRS will collect for 2009 and also increase income tax revenue to all 50 states, in other words there will be a return that will lower the initial payout cost, (3) Lets not forget that is was the taxpayer that bailed out Bear Sterns an investment firm, not a bank and indirectly JP Morgan, a bank, the reason little to almost no government regulation. (4) It is the right humanitarian thing to do.

Does anyone know the current status of this bill? Have been out of work since October 2007, exhausted my unemployment benefits, and have found that trying to find a part time or even temporary job is as hard as trying to find a full time job!!! WE NEED THIS PASSED ! AND SOON!
Tom
This has to pass or they should all be voted out of office
here we go
Ok, after calling various senators offices:the latest info. is that the senate passed the war bill last week in a viote of 75 to 22. they did however do is pull of bill H.R. 5749 , and the GI bill. The 5749 was pulled from the bill by Kennedy. They believe they have a better chance to pass it as seperate bill, which is now S2544, it is at the office of the finance committee, Which is led by Sen. Butkus. I spoke with the comittees office and what I was told they have no date set as to when the discussions on this will be started. They said it is not even ready to go on their calander. Oh, by the way I was also told it will not have enough of a majority to pass the senate on it's own because the republicans are mostly against it. Gee go figure, They gave Busch what he wanted, once again they ran scared. In closing I say we as unemployed Americans need to stand up for ourselves and plan a march on Washington, to show them how many people our unemployed and angry.
HR5749 is now S2544
HR5749 is now S2544
The unemployment extension (HR 5749) of 13 to 26 weeks is officially SR 2544. I read the comment above and called 877-3311223 and asked for Senator Baucus (not Senator Butkus) democrat who is head of the finance committee and no date has been set as to when the discussions on this will be started. They said it is not even ready to go on their calendar for discussion this week and probably will not make it next week either. With 4th of July week just around the corner, which is an off week and the month of August which is basically an off month, hopefully by Sept. the bill will see some action. Unless calls are made to your state Senators in your state that you live in, to push a rally for this bill, and get it on the books NOW, and pass it don’t push it around again. (See next item limited to 1000 spaces)
Continued from above
Make the CALL 877-3311223 and ask for your senator, leave a message and get their email and send them an email concerning the unemployment crisis. Everyone should call Senator Baucus to get going on this bill NOW also email him at max@baucus.senate.gov Let him know that your house is ready for foreclosure now, its either gas or food for your family, riots in the streets on Washington are not needed this week but people are hungry and getting angry. Elections are coming up, and maybe we all should turn to the Republicans this election, because at least they can get something done in the senate unlike the Democrats that I have been voting for all my life of 52. Please pass the word to your neighbors and friends. We the people need to make a stand for ourselves not for King George’s war and loose economic ways. Signed Bob L. Swartz Creek, Michigan

The extension may get voted on today. In light of last Fridays Dept. of labor reports showing the National U.I. rate skyrocketing up .5%. Watch c-span.
Republicans can kiss my @$$
Act Now! Please call both Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer's office right away and leave a message saying, “The extension of unemployment benefits must be included in the war spending bill to be voted by the House of Representatives.” Please also call you Congressperson right away and say, “Please tell Speaker Nancy Pelosi you strongly support providing extended unemployment insurance benefits as part of the war spending bill to be voted on by the House of Representatives.” The toll-free number is 1-877-331-1223.
Thank you for keeping up the fight for the unemployed!
Hope to be a taxpayer soon
Just caught the hr 5749 vote on CSpan. Needed 2/3 majority to pass and we missed it by a few votes. 100% yea votes from the dems, but not enough from the Bush camp. Don't know what happens next. At least Mr Taxpayer (above) will be happy. And, by the way mr taxpayer, you are wrong about Burger King always hiring. Why don't you try to get a job there and see what happens. If I wasn't such a good person I would pray to God to put you in our situation. You tempt me. Also, by the way, a person does pay taxes on unemployment too, and that will help pay your unemployment someday if the need ever arises. Although I can't imagine why anyone would not hire you.
Taxpayer
What a surprise – I get called names when I try and help.
Listen up idiots – the government does NOT care about you. Don’t you get it???
If you really need help you should go to a charity or the Church. In fact if I were to give the Church $100, they would be able to give you around $98 of it. BUT, when the government STEALS my $100, they keep $70 and give YOU $30.
By supporting a nanny government, you are making things WORSE. Grow the f**k up, pull yourself up, move to a different town, state or country and stop looking to the government for help. My grandparents were better people than you and they broke their backs, unlike you spineless scum.
Hey taxpayer (AL)
Get a life and get off of this blog. You posted on both sites dummy! Apparently you have nothing better to do than to pick on some one less fortunate. Nobody wants to read your stupid remarks, you have no clue what you are talking about anyway dumbass. I am surprised you have a job, not too many companies hire dumbass retards who are hateful,,oh wait a minute,,, are you a republican? I bet you are even a politician,,,and you call us spineless scum? Goodbye taxpayer
Responding to taxpayer only encourages him. Let's ignore his insensitivity and get back to the subject at hand

I'm 61 and worked my entire life. Now ,at my age, I get laid off from a job that was directly connected to the housing market. I'm forced to take SS early and a small pension early but that does'nt happen for 8 months. Unemployment has run out and I stand a good chance of loosing what little I've got. PLEASE pass this bill. I'm certainly not alone.

Help needed in Georgia
After watching the debate today (6/12) it was quite obvious that many do not want us to have an extension, despite the fact that I have paid into the trust for 30 years. My benefits have expired and despite too many interviews to count, I am still unemployed. How is drilling for oil going to give me a job? I would probably get the same answer I have gotten at every interview - OVEREDUCATED AND OVERQUALIFIED. Senators Chambliss and Isakson, please do not veto this bill. President Bush, are you listening? Thank you.
HeyTaxpayer
When Im homless, I'll be stealing your gas, your bicycle and anything else I can to eat that day, and when you find me and have me arrested, you will pay far more than $137 total for this fiasco.
M. Parks
Senate passed HR 2642 75-22.The house didn’t like the other things in it like GI assistance, Iraq troop levels & King George threatened a veto. So Democrats want to drop the extension so King George will sign it. The House voted on HR 5479. It passed 274-137 but now Senator Reed said won’t push this if the Republicans object. Congress is passing it back and forth & posturing to make each other look bad in the next election an our lives are being toyed with. The total cost of this extension is less than the cost of one month in Iraq so we as Americans and taxpayers get screwed so King George can fix the mess he made in Iraq.
TO: TAXPAYER
I ONLY HAVE ONE WORD FOR YOU "BITCH"
to uneducated taxpayer
Get an education before you run your mouth. The money to pay for this was paid by all of us when we were working. There is a fund that will cover this that has about 35 billion in it already. So your tax money is going to pay for bombs and bullets in Iraq and billions for african leaders that never make it to the people it is intended for. That is, the small amount that actually makes it there. The rest pays for Senators to fly around in private jets and to have villa's in the bahammas. Besides our tax money isn't even an issue now as we are printing money as fast as we can spend it. That is why the dollar is worth about .50 cents now and we have a trillion dollar defecit. Waldo spends money like a drunken sailor on leave, except on hard working Americans that need it.
Oh and one more thing
You can't get a job at Burger King in California unless you are unable to speak english.
M.Parks
Agreed! Taxpayer is insensitive unaware and probably isolated from the problems of the economy. I really was amused when he said charities return $98 out of a $100. I wonder if he was a Jim & Tammy Baker donor? (laugh)And the gentlemen who said there is $35 billion in a trust fund for unemployment is correct but the actual cash like the social security trust fund is being used by the government for other things. What really scares me about taxpayer is over 59 million of him(taxpayer) were stupid enough to vote for King George in the last election based on King Georges “honesty” and “compassionate conservatism” and there are still 28% who approve of the job King George is doing. He thinks we would rather have a unemployment check than a good job. Big question: Is King George just a bad President or the worst ever?
J. Roses
Pass this bill! Help American families. We are talking about former employees who have contributed to America! What is the problem????

To: Taxpayer:
Taxpayer: You Disgust Me, I too have never been on unemployment, and I am fortunate enough to be in the same job for 18+ years, but that does not mean that I have no sympathy for those who have lost there jobs after several years of being in the workforce. I would MUCH RATHER have the government take 137.00 from me if it meant Hard working Americans could get a job, and gain back their dignity then to give it the illegal immagrants who have nothing better to do than take our jobs, than march in the streets for their rights. What Rights?, Does the word ILLEGAL mean anything to you. I bet you never gave a second thought to that did you, or is your nose so far in the air that you can't see what is right in front you. I support this bill 100%, and you TAXPAYER are nothing but a snob. God help you if you lose your job for unforseen circumtances. I hope somebody would have more sympathy for you than you seem to have for others. GROW UP.
O.E. OLSON
I am a machinist in Northeastern MI. I have been laid off so long that I have lost about everything that I worked for in my whole adult life. I have had to move to my aged Mother's farm in order to have a roof over my head while I WAIT and hope for the Unemployment Extension Bill to be enacted. I have a small amount of money coming in from the VA but if it weren't for my family helping me and my small amount of Disability from the Veterans Administration---I would be one of those people you see sitting on the curb.
What I really need is a renewed Economy here in MI, right along with the extended Unemployment Benefit. So how about some action on BOTH ISSUES? I need work now!
To All
On the blog for S 2544. I have posted the latest information that I received from phone calls made to the house and senate made on 06/17/08. Please go to s 2544 and read the info. It is under the heading: Fellow Americans.

I have been laid off six months from my construction job and now my benefits are up. I'm 54 years old and never expected to be in this boat. Without this extension I lose everything I have worked for all of my life. Anyone who has ever worked in construction field knows you can't be a lazy person and do that kind of work. I never thought it would happen to me.....Be forwarned it can happen to anyone anywhere. I hope Bush does the right thing and lets this bill go through at least to buy me enough time to learn a different trade or find a job. My health insurance ends on June 31 and without unemployment benefits I cannot renew it.
M.Parks
Looks like the democrats got outmaneuvered as usual. The extension won't include the 13 weeks for high unemployments states like Michigan. Guess the ones that need it most are the one that get the least.Frankly I wish Pelosi and Reid would get a job selling ice cream on a truck it would more in line with there ability.WOW what a sorry bunch of politicians!!
Unemplyed
You will get 13 weeks....just not the additional 13 weeks after that (26 total). The original Bill had 13 weeks Nation wide then an addition 13 wks for high unemployment states. Now, it is just 13 weeks Nation wide....better than nothing!
To Unemployed
Yes it's better than nothing but it's indicative of our lousy politicians. The bill cost the same as one month in Iraq. They have been debating it for 6 months.I am angry and there isn't anything I can do because these politicians are oblivious to anything but their political future.I live in Mich and I've had 5 jobs in the last 8 years and lost four because the companies left MIch. The unemployment rate is 8.5% and has been consistently at or around 7% for 8 years. I've went through a fortune in accumulated saving and selling assets to remain afloat. No one care about Michigan's economy & our senators are ineffectual. At this point all I got is disgust!
Confused
As usual, I'm confused. Have all states been approved for extended unemployment benefits? Its not clear to me. Does the unemployment rate have to be above 6%. My state is LOWER than 5% so will we be able to collect extended unemployment then??????
Sooo Soooo confused!!!
LDM
Remember the sixties. Time to remember who we are....WE ARE THE PEOPLE....someone on another site had a good idea to demonstrate with empty plates and spoons at govt bldgs & the White House like would have been done in the sixties. Unemployment, the war..... That might get their attention. We'd just need to organize. Any leaders out there?
to LDM
Americans are stupid. 59 million voted for king George and until gas went up he was liked. It's got bite everone until it hurts then things change. Unbelievably King George is coming to Michigan 25th or 26th of June. I don't think anything would affect him but at least we could ruin his visit. I think the truck drivers are being screwed the most ($4.79 for diesel) and they got the biggest toys! (laugh)Any Teamsters out there?
RTP
OK.. It passed today... See Washington Post for details....
Confused
Yes the bill has cleared the house, this is the final draft of the bill that the house and senate have decided upon. Yes all 50 states will receive the benefits, unfortunatley to get this passed out there will not be the additional 13 weeks. At least we are getting 13 more weeks.
Down and out in JERSEY
On June 12th I E mailed my congressman a lengthy message telling him of my circumstances and how desperate so many of us are. Laid off with absolutely no hope of a job anywhere here in the garden state. But I should'nt be too surprised he hasn't replied. Afterall, he's a republican. It's obvious to me which party is for the working man and which party is'nt.
RB
This has been killed in the Senate, you can thank Senator Kyl of Arizona. Dems are going to try to attach it to the Iraq war spending bill to get it passed and signed. You know the Republicans are going to fight it because it will show a clearer picture of the economy when people that have exhausted their benefits are once again counted in the unemployment rate. The saying goes "If you want to live like a Republican, then vote for a Democrat".
Jenny
Im scared , as a single mom going to school full time We were on the edge already ,getting laid off and now benefits are gone. I really dont know what is to happen to us.Than im told even when passed it will take awhile for the paperwork.Im very scared.
jim
Out of all the comments above not one mentions the jobs that the illegal immigrants take. What were once good paying trade jobs have been reduced to minimum wage jobs. Illegal immigration takes away jobs just as exporting jobs do.
to Jim
I've read about 70% of Americans want the illegals sent home. There are 12-20 million of them here. Thats 12-20 million job openings yet both Presidential candidates favor some kind of amnesty. Perfect Hypocrisy!!! Makes you wonder who is running this country?---It sure ain't the American citizens! We need a third party in this country that represents the economic interests of the middle class.
To: Jim and To Jim
Homo's! this has nothing to do with Illegal aliens! So take your whinning butts out of here! The crapy jobs illegal aliens take have never been high paying jobs. Stop talking out of your hole!
Rich business people run the country so stop whinning and start your own business so you can hire Legal American residents and pay them very high wages with full benefits.
TOM & DONNA
IT SEEMS WE HAVE BILLIONS TO SEND TO EVERY FORIEGN COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WHO HAVE THEIR HAND OUT AND DON'T APPRECIATE OUR GENEROSITY, BUT WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO HELP THOSE OF US WHO ARE UNEMPOLYED IN THE USA. BOTH MYSELF AND MY WIFE ARE UNEMPLOYED THROUGH NO FAULT OF OUR OWN AND WE CAN'T FIND WORK. WHEN IS THIS COUNTERY GOING TO WAKE UP!

I'm 56, my husband is 68. My unemployment ran out in March. Our home is in foreclosure. Seriously considering moving to Mexico, where we can LIVE on Social Security. PASS THIS EXTENSION!!!
Nancy
We need to be heard in Washington and by our state reps. With the billions being spent on other countries, it is time to think of our own homeland and supply unemployed in this country with more benefits. Please pass this bill now.
RTP
Mr. Bush, is going to sign this bill this week....we got the 13 week extension not the full 26 weeks.... Baby steps....Baby steps..
EAB
It is 6/30/08- Rumor has it that the Bill has passed in the House and Senate, and that Bush has approved it.... Can anyone confirm? Have been unemployed since 1/19/2007... What is wrong with Congress!!!!! Let them walk a mile in our shoes...
RTP

WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND TAXPAYER.... the bill has passed so good luck to everyone and god bless
Josh
When in the hell will I get my money from this? I've been out of work since Dec. of 07 and have ran out of benefits, I can't find anything on the web that states when or wether I will recieve said payments.....maybe i should contact my local UE office...?? Any thoughts?
LW
Yes, they should put a statement on the unemployment web-site to the effect of when the first check will be deposited to our bank account after mailing in the one page Florida application. Florida was prompt to have the one page application to print and mail in (can't get a fax through). It would avoid phone calls to them if they'd put in the website that info.
LW
FL on phone tells you 30 min wait. To get to person you must not push any menu buttons, then they will transfer to speak with someone. Only they hang up once you get there and don't let you hold the 30 min. They still don't just post WHEN we will get our first check. Common sense it is the question we need answered. Then their phone won't ring so much. Can't they figure that out?
