THE MANDATORY HOURS THAT A NURSE IS REQUIRED TO WORK ARE INHUMAN! NOT ONLY ARE WE ALREADY STRESSED AND OVERWORKED DOING AOUR REGULARE SHIFTS THEN WE ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE TO WORK MORE! NURSES BECOME MORE IRRITABLE AND MORE PRONE TO MAKE MISTAKES NOT TO MENTION THAT THEY ARE TOO TIRED TO SAFELY DRIVE HOME PUTTING THEMSELVES AND INNOCENT PEOPLE AT RISK FOR INJURY OR DEATH. WE RECENTLY HAD A TECH CRASH AFTER WORKING HER MANDATORY DOUBLE SHIFT. SHE DIED INSTANTLY AND HER 3 YEAR OLD SON DIED A FEW DAYS LATER. THIS MOTHER LEFT BEHIND A HUSBAND AND ANOTHER YOUNG CHILD. THERE HAVE BEEN COUNTLESS EPISODES OF THIS HAPPENING.
I THINK THE NURSING PROFESSION IS IN ENOUGH TROBLE AS IS BUT TO MOT OVERTIME ALSO IS NOT GOING TO HELP WITH RETAINING STAFF OR IN CAREING FOR OUR PATIENTS.
Kathy Meaux RN, CMSRN, CCM
I agree. I left the acute care setting due to the long hours and mandatory overtime. Everything that Ms. Pool said is sad but TRUE. Everyone is put at danger, including the general public. A patient in a hospital is alresy sicker than average (because you have to be half dead to meet inpatient criteria) so to add to the patient being more at risk because the nurse is tired, not negligent is the end all.
