schedule A is better than this Bill, as Schedule A allows nurses who are present in USA, to work right after filing the Immgn petition and Adj of status.

John

Bring nurse from other country is an expensive and long way to solve the problem. But a lot of foreign student graduate from US nursing program every year and have no proper working status after 1 year OPT. If have a special visa number for US graduation, it will be a good way to help. Just like the special quota for H1B with US Master degree students.

Lily

Agree with John said. US graduate nurse was trained here and should be given priority to work in the US.

Nora

Foreign trained nurses could become the victims of visa scams originating in this country and in countries of origin. The foreign trained RN's may speak English but many do not have critical thinking skills and will require extensive training by facilities to learn how American Nursing is done. Understanding how to speak English does not mean the foreign trained RN can teach concepts. Patient teaching is more that giving written discharge instructions. The current focus of hiring Nurses from India, the Philippines and China will create a nursing crisis in those countries. It would be better to set up and fund high school nursing science centers to train high school students an prepare them for entry into nursing schools. Increase pay for instructors, create institutes specific to training nurses and fund them via Federal bills. American trained ESL students on visas should be considered for immediate permanent visa status when they graduate from school.

John

Most US graduates live in the US for a long time and have no problem with the nursing skill and English. After 1 year OPT, they also get experiences. If they have to leave the US at this time because of no available immigration visas for EB-3, there will increase the shortage of nursing in the US.
Should we make immigration visa number available for the US graduate nursing students? There should be thousands of qualified nursing students full the nursing position immediately.
It's said about 20% of qualified nurses are not doing nursing job. But I think the visa problem is also a reason because the US graduates take the Licence as the US nurse but can't work as in the US now. They are waitig for visa number available which is available at 2001 or 2002 for now and there is no valid non-immigration visa for foreign nurse during this long waiting period.

These are great points. I'm one of the U S nurse graduates that cannot work due to unavailability of visa numbers. I hold a bachelors degree and is currently working on my masters. I have passed NCLEX, is licenced to practice in the US and even has some expirience in a US hosiptal through my OPT. I also have a job offer pending in a pedriati ICU which is my speciality but even with the great shortage I'm sitting at home with a nursing license. I hope more Visa numbers will be available soon especially for foreign nurses that are already in the US and meet all the qualifications.

Dee

I am also a US nurse graduate that cannot work due to retrogression ( I even graduated with honors). I have passed the NCLEX and now I am just waiting for the visa numbers to become available for me to be able to work.

I totally agree to give the US Graduated RN the priority in ajustment of status. To be specific, once they obtain RN license, and have US sponsor, they shall be allowed to concurrently file I-140 and I-485. RN schedule A occupation shall be separate from EB3 category and list independently.

I took RN educaiton from USA, I have RN licence and job offer from USA. but I am not able to work as per immigration law, I do not understand why they are doing this?? There are lots of jobs availabe and I do have all the necessary skill and qualification to work as a RN but I am sitting at home after spending more than 25,000 and 4 years of time on my education, I hope U.S. government should do something for this. Please creat some special visa catagory for those who take education and spend money in USA to become a nurse.

Nurse

Have you heard about new immgiration law regarding F1 visa??
U.S. government has grand 29 months OPT for Student visa, but nursing student are excluded from it. So if you study other than nursing then you will get 29 months OPT after your study, otherwise you will get only 12 months of OPT(nursing)
I do not understand why they have done this partiality?????

RN

I am a US graduate foreign nurse waiting for EB3 visas to become available. There is need for a better system. At least one that separates nursing visas from "Other workers" category. The wait is too long and the nursing shortage is not getting any better

SK

I am also an US graduate. I have just graduated and am looking for a job for my OPT year. However I have been having difficult time finding hospital that would hire me knowing i may have to leave after OPT finishes. I would really appreciate if they would open up the visa for US graduate foreign nurses!!!

Alessandra

May I just say that I find Nora's above comment extremely offensive. I am a registered nurse in the UK can speak english fluently (!!!!) and I have passed my NCLEX I have been nursing for over 10 years, one of my skills is excellent communication and CRITICAL thinking. I am absolutely stunned that a professional nurse could make such comments. We, in the UK have many foreign nurses, there are no issues in their critical thinking, and any nurse who is professionally trained will always need to learn new skills even from hospital to hospital nevermind from counrty to country. I am awaiting my Visa and only hope I do not come across such abhorrent adversity when I get to the US!!!

Nurse

I am agreeing with Alessandra. When hospital hires a foreign nurse they must be taking interviews, It is now like they take anybody and put them to give a nursing care. The first thing we learned in the nursing is to respect each other without any biases.
