Please folks, be sure that you understand this legislation. There are too many comments here to list that make reference to a "second chance." This is NOT the second chance bill. This bill HR1475 restores the Federal "Good Time" allowances which WILL allow earlier release but it is not the second chance bill. I am an absolute supporter of this bill but please don't be confused. The second chance act of 2007 was signed into law by Bush and is in effect now. The "other" second chance bill that many are fighting for is H.R.1529 the Second Chance For Ex-Offenders Act of 2009 which will allow Federal first time non violent offenders to make application for expunction of their record. Important, ONLY federal offenses are covered. For more information on H.R. 1529 check elsewhere on this site and join this group on Yahoo to get in the fight. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/support_of_hr1529/ If you are waiting for "THEM" to do something then nothing will be done. You must take action...

I am all for passing this bill. Federal justice system is anything but just. The judges have too much power and the sentences uneven. Like everything else money is no object when it comes to federal spending. While the whole system needs an overhaul, let us begin by passing this bill. It is a shameful fact that our country has the most number of prisoners per capita than any country in the world. We prayed and hoped that Mr. Obama would really bring about change in our country. If Pres. Obama really wants to implement change, let hime take this bill seriously.....

PLEASE SUPPORT THIS BILL!!!!! We have all made mistakes in our lives and we all deserve a second chance. Don't lock up our loved ones so history can repeat itself. Bring them home to their families so they can make a difference in their childrens lives and teach them not to make the same mistakes.
what alot of people don't know is that a FEDERAL judge has to sentence from a "rulebook" while STATE judges can factor in other things like spouse's health etc. So the fact that I'm disabled and so is my 20 year old son, it had no effect on hubby's sentence. So, I fully SUPPORT this bill and HR 61.

As for the ones against this bill, try not to judge people UNTIL you have ALL the FACTS!!! Everybodies stories on here are a little different. But they are also the same: INMATES ARE PEOPLE TOO!!!!...

This was the cause for the civil war,Not slavery. Each state has the right to have the death penalty or not as well as control sentences and their terms and conditions. I have a child who was a victim of molestation by a repeat offender who received only 1 year. What we need are better judges who do not give harsher punishments to one individual because his crime was against someone of stature, and slap the wrist of a repeat offender because the parents had no money or stature. Change the system so that we can throw worthless judges out and you will solve the problem as far as the majority rules means nothing syndrome that plagues our nation.

Think about it, the Constitution gave more rights to states to govern themselves for a reason. If i think Capital punishment is wrong, i can move to a state where it is not legal! Now if we don't want a soft judge or a hard case or one that is prejudicial in his/her motivation, they may be removed from office by a majority vote....

I'm all for this bill because everyone deserves a second chance everyone makes mistakes everyone should be able to have the chance to learn from them, but without given the chance how do you know.We are all human that doesn't mean that we shouldn't be given the chance to show that we can make a difference. My ex-husband is doing time right now,but I know that he's learnt from the consequences that he has been given,I know that there are others just like him that if just given the chance then they would succeed so please consider this bill not just for us,but for other families also thank you.Together we all can make a differnce!!!!!...

However if you also feel strongly about giving the same folks a real second chance, I invite you to go back to the list of bills, find H.R.1529, read through the post where among other things, you will find information about joining a support HR1529 group on Yahoo. we would welcome your support and input...
