I signed up for a try one which is a one year contract to see if I still wanted to be in the military after being out of our service for 6 years. I decided I could make more money being at home and before I could get out of my one year contract, I was notified that I was placed on stop loss. I served my term in Iraq, and had 3 family members pass away during my absence. Not only did I serve with honor, I completed the mission I was tasked with selfless service and should be compensated for the money and time lost with my wife and children. We are still living from paycheck to paycheck due to the cost of living and the price of fuel my wife has to spend to take the kids to school and herself to work to compensate for my income. I hope this is testament enough to take care of the soldiers. (4 years active, 4 years IRR). I was told that this bill is only for people who had no time left on their contract, which includes your IRR time. Everyone says "you volunteered" and I did six years ago. I have been deployed three times and now I would like to come home. I don't care about the money, I just hope this bill and others like it help end stop loss as a retention policy. Just because I'm enlisted shouldn't mean that I am an indentured servant. Officers can resign their commissions and leave honorably. Units should know which personnel are leaving when and take measures to fill those slots with incoming soldiers that are getting those fat bonuses. My unit currently has two CPLs that are being stop-lossed because they missed the cut-off date by 3, and 7 days, respectively. We have received an influx of replacements for them in the past several months, but because of the army's shortage of both competent personnel and leadership these guys had to give up careers they had been setting up for the past year. This is my second tour in Iraq, and I think that stoploss pay is just as good an idea as reenlistment bonuses. My husband was suppose to be out of the army November of 2006 and instead was stop-lossed and sent to Iraq for 12 months and then after being over there for 3 months was extended for another 3. Making it 15 months that he spent away from his family and his newborn baby girl.
