I believe this bill would be the best thing for the State Defense Forces. I am also a recruiter and like the other guy, when you tell prospects they have to supply most of their own equipment it is sometimes a turn-off for them....

1. A tax break would help a great deal. We don't even qualify as a reservist or national guard deduction on Form 2106 for reimbursement.

2. I recruit constantly. You have to tell prospects right up front that (a) we're unpaid and (b) we supply our own uniforms and equipment. Almost without exception, they can get past (a), but not (b)....

H.R. 826, the State Defense Force Improvement Act of 2007, is an important act for our country today. It is important for the citizens of the United States because we never know what lies ahead to threaten our safety and or welfare. Those who are against this act should take a moment to ponder over how it will affect their lives when they find themselves in a position of receiving service from members of a well trained and equipped state guard during violent, dangerous, or needful times. I donate many hours of service, as a State Guard member. I do so because it is important to me to take an active roll to ensure our country is safe and healthy for our families. I also desire my service efforts to be a meaningful donation for current or past US military servicemen and women. Help secure our country’s promising future by supporting this act....

Can we at least feed these volunteers that are so dedicated to service to their state and country? What's the hold up? National Guard commanders are supportive of SDF's and are anxious to get the ball rolling. They see the Organized State Militias as one asset. It's time to turn the corner and get this bill passed!...

When will congress and the States stoping looking at us as Old worthless soldiers, who do nothing but drink coffee eat donuts, and tell war stories. Both Congress and the States need to get serious about the SDF and start providing funding. As citizens who volunteer our time and money, we are going broke for the government. Some States provide funding and others provide ZERO..Get Serious about the SDF. If we didn't have a love for our country and our states, we wouldn't be here as Volunteers. The reality is, many are leaving the SDF because they can no longer afford to take money out of their own pockets....

As a vetern myself C Co, 801st main sup BN and a former NG member, I don't this bill is dangerous at all. I can asure you if a war was to ever hit the states every one would be glad to have the SDF ready to help you can never have to many volunteers that have a military back ground or can and are willing to get the training to be ready for what ever may come up. This would not cost the Gov. any more than it alread has, the surplus they would get is stuf that has earned it's use and the military doesn't need or want it anyway and it is going to Police dep. and Fire dep. for FREE and it should be givin to the SDF the same way....

As a veteran (B Co, 82nd Sig, 82nd ABN) I think this is a dangerous bill. There are already provisions within the Constitution for states to have defense forces (Nat. Guard, Air Nat. Guard, etc.) and there are adequate civilian organizations with more experience, man power and capability to provide help in any disaster (Red Cross, United Way, volunteer SAR units, etc.).

I don't see or understand the need to add another layer to the existing ones, especially one, which in my reading of the bill, would allow the formation of quasi-military units that are semi-autonomous from the government. If the need is to counter balance the number of NG troops being deployed overseas to Afghanistan or Iraq then take these volunteers and roll them into the state NG units....

We ARE the legacy of a proud tradition. All you have to do is to look back into history and see where SDFs were the the organized armed militias of the states. Unfortunately, we share the legacyas most of those militias were outfitted and trained without the support of the states and the National Government.
I can't see why we who are vets are looked upon by those in Congress as wannabes. We are PROVEN soldiers! All we ask is for the support from our government to do the job we are trained for.

WHY can't this bill be passed????...

Too many state adjutant generals are unaware of the low cost and benefits of having the SDFs supplement their forces. Local defense volunteer forces have been present since 1607 and provided the major military support during the civil war and earlier wars. There is little need for SDFs to carry weapons unless they serve with MP units - so no one should get excited since few do or would. We need to get our Congressmen to support Rep Joe Wilson's HR826. I wrote mine - why don't you- it took me no more than 10 minutes through the washingtonwatch email system....

I am a Vet that was looking for a way to keep serveing. I found that way in the ALSDF. I feel that the SDF is a very good thing. The way our troops are stretched to the max and the SDF can help in every way. I have talked the SDF to tons of people and thay all think it is a good thing but a lot can't aford it. I think if we had a little help we could have the things we need and tons of people to help us use it. Now get H.R.826 passed....
