When I learned of the inequities, I joined CRTA.
The California Retired Teachers' Association has a monthly newsletter and can also be accessed on line.
There is always news about legislative contact. We've circulated petitions, and written letters. If you want to be added to the e mail list the contact e mail is: nguytonvc@sbcglobal.net
Visits are planned to the offices of California legislators in the fall. Gladys Bibb is the go to person for our cause and has a column in the monthly newsletter.
I encourage you to join CRTA to stay current on actionable items. It seems that this would be the gathering place for coming together to bring pressure to bear on politicians to give us what is rightfully ours: a reasonably comfortable, dignified, well earned retirement.
Here are a couple of contact phone numbers which Gladys printed in her column (LEGISLATION) this month: Laura Gulovsen: 642-6544 and Gladys Bibb herself at 654-9278....

If my husband pre deceases me, I will lose almost half my income because of this unfair law. In addition, I worked outside the classroom in training and development within the health field for a total of about seven years. I returned to teaching because I was a single mom and it made the most sense. Yet because I am collecting my PERS pension, I can get none or almost none, of the SS to which I myself contributed!
And survivor benefits will be, if any, minuscule. I had expected a comfortable retirement; we own our Prius and our home, outright...but even these won't save me from a future income that might just be at the near poverty level. Outrageous. It just makes no sense....

I certainly hope that this bill will pass. My husband who is retiring in August will get a very reduced social security amount as for the last 20 years worked under PERS. He did have 24 years under SSI. What shouldn't he get what he paid for? I can only hope that this bill doesn't take forever to resolve....

I worked right after high school, joined the USMC and paid SS the whole time. Then I worked fro 30 years as a police officer and was not allowed to pay SS. I retired and have been working and paying SS for 16 years. Now the gov wants to pull the rug out from under us.

Let's mobilize and go to Washington to make our voices heard. I have written and called Reps and Sens but I dont;t know if that will be enough...

Hang in there everybody. Yes, frustration is and high and building more everyday. Stay calm.
We will organize in Sept./Oct. in
the 14-15 states where people are
directly hit by GPO/WEP. We will
make ourselves "heard" leading up
to the November election. There must be 300,000 - 500,000 citizens affected by GPO/WEP in these states. The candidates will have to address this issue if ..THEY WANT OUR VOTES!! Our votes could be the DIFFERENCE in a close election !
Stay committed to the cause.

By the way, why does this legislation only apply to thirteen states? Is this right. Where is the equality among all the states?...

In reading other folks comments it is evident that we are all concerned about the same issues (HR-82 & S-206) and how the current rules negatively effect us. I hope this site is not just being used as a "Sounding Board" and that folks are doing their part to make their voices heard. Contact/phone/write to your Senators/congressmen etc. and keep doing it. Thanks to (R & K and James III for accurate info.) One Org. that I do feel is very active in this issue is NARFE (National Active & Retired Federal Employees Assoc.)You can call their Legislative Hot line # for weekly updates to see if they have any info. 1-877-217-8234 - it is a recording and is updated weekly....

The total amount of money for all cival servant entitlements, from federal to municipal, is in the trillions. Yes, trillions. This is unacceptable. It is also untrue that civil servants work for less than the privat sector. Why should unionized public employee receive more security and better benefits than the privat sector? Also, firing publice employees for not doing their jobs is almost impossible. I have seen this personally. Most of the comment posted on this board must be from civil servants....

As James III says, "You want HELP? Get involved!" Call the Congressional Switchboard at 202/224-3121 and ask for the office of Congressman McNulty. Ask what's happening w/H.R.82. Then say you support the Social Security Fairness Act of 2007 and request that Rep. McNulty move the bill out of committee and on to the House floor for debate. You'll be asked your name and where your from. Then, call the number again and ask for the office of Sen. Kerry. Ask what's happening w/S.206. Then say you support the Social Security Fairness Act of 2007 and request that Sen. Kerry move the bill out of committee and on to the Senate floor for debate. You'll be feeling pretty good by now so call the number again and again asking to be connected to each member of congress for YOUR state and tell them that you support the Social Security Fairness Act of 2007 and you want to know what their position is on H.R 82 or S.206. After a rest, why not report your experience on this forum....

will discover they are being "short

benefit payment. Join the club !
You want HELP ? Get involved !
Write, phone, email your Senator or
Representative and register your
strong displeasure with WEP & GPO.
R&K ( Richard and Karen) have made
several good postings with good
suggestions. GO back and read them.
I have emailed many Senators and
Reps. - pressuring them to support
passage of HR 82 & S. 206. THEY are
