Colonel Washington,

Welcome to the club. I just retired after 28 years, and like you, must wait until I'm 60 (nine more years) for medical benefits. I didn't expect Congress to pass the Age 55 retirement, but at least they could be imaginative and provide us with an earlier medical retirement. High school educated auto workers get a better medical retirement plan than we do, and I don't recall them putting their lives on the line for anyone!...

I RETIRED from hte Air Force Reserves 1 April 2008 after 30 yrs of combined active duty and reserve time)

I am not eligible for medical benefits until I turn 60 yrs of age. Currently I’m 55

Tricare Reserve Select became available for reservist in October 2007 however, current rules say that you can only qualify for this health insurance as an active reservist.

Average cost for civilian health insurance for a family of 4 (per month) $700 - $800)

Cost for Tricare Reserve Select $253 per month

What can be done for those retired members who could benefit from low cost health insurance but have not yet reached age 60 when medical benefits begin? New members of the reserves can benefit but not someone who has given 30 yrs of service? What can be done?
